I’ve had this story floating around my head for a while and I hope to be able to expand it into a couple of different shorts… I already have some interesting ideas floating around but if you have anything you think I should add, take out, or if you have any ideas yourself, I’d love to hear from ya!

Crystal Hearts

“Come here little one, I wish to tell you a very important story.”

“Ooh, a story? What kind of story? Is it about a princess and a dragon? Or about the smiling cat? (1)”

A rumbled chuckle. “No kit. It’s a story of crystal hearts and about those precious few born with such a beautiful gift.”

A light suddenly blazed in the darkness, pure gold and blue like a summer’s day. In response flared a deep red, almost menacing yet oddly protective light. These lights revealed a young boy with pure azure eyes and sunlight-spun hair, entrancing beauty incarnate.

Yet once released from the beauty of such stunning attributes, anyone looking could instantly recognize the signs of lean living and hardship, razor sharp angles of bones just barely covered with skin, blue and purple fingertip and fist necklaces (2), angry, infected wounds tracing the delicate form, a horrid parody of a mother’s gentle touch.

The child could be no older than five or six summers yet in his eyes were already the shadows of such pain, anguish, and sorrow to a degree that no human heart could bear. But no matter how deep the pain was, no matter how far it cut, it was perfectly balanced with shining, unfettered, boundless hope . How such a conundrum could exist in one person, in an adult, much less a child. Such an innocent beauty, torn by fate and circumstance to stand as a martyr to the laughing, thirsting, hate-filled masses, charged with atoning for a crime committed even before his birth.

Opposite the child figure the shimmering lights also revealed the monstrously large yet eerily elegant form of a giant fox. Ah, here reclined the cause of all the young one’s problems, this horrible, pagan lord of demons. The stories of humans relate the tales of this creature, -savage bloodlust and smoke and screams of the dying-, stories told by those left behind and swiftly drown out the older myths that speak of this same creature with a reverent tone.

The old myths told of his true nature as the Demon King and Lord of Spirits, the nine tailed fox, a wish granter, a mischievous yet gentle trickster, courageous and beautiful and wise. He ruled his lands with a firm but loving hand, that is, until a dark and truly evil man had used magic to drive him mad, implanting his mind vile visions of his lands burnings and his subjects dying, their heads falling off and being held in their own arms. The kitsune, in his great insane rage, attacked a nearby village. Finally a human lord, tall and regal, was able to disturb the insanity for a few precious moments, just long enough to sacrifice himself and seal the fox spirit into a young human child, leaving behind with the great one a wish, a legacy, and a promise.

And it was time for Kyuubi to fulfill that promise.

Padding over and wrapping his much larger form around the fragile boy, he grinned slightly as the young one looked up at him with a face so reminiscent of a young fox it was otherworldly. Just as mischievous as a fox and with all the curiosity of a cat was his young charge, a fact he was quite proud of. “Does a person with a crystal heart have to be real careful? Do they break easy?” Another rumbling chuckle before a reply. “No kit, crystal hearts are no harder nor easier to break than regular hearts. See, very few creatures are blessed with the ability to grow a crystal heart. It is a rare and precious gift that is a symbol of utmost love and has many special properties including the ability to cure illness, grant luck, and prolong life. Anything born with such a heart can choose to give their heart to the one they love most, but doing so comes at a terrible price to the giver’s life. It is the ultimate sacrifice for a person cannot live without their heart.”

Widened blue eyes stared in amazement at the demon. “Wow! You’d have to love someone a whole lot to give them your heart!” He exclaimed, one tanned hand reaching up to caress his chest just over his heart before smiling, “But if I had a crystal heart and you were sick, I’d definitely give it to you Kyuubi-ni-chan!” The large fox felt great warmth at this statement and gently leaned over to lick at the blond hair, wrapping his tails tighter until the boy was completely pillowed, the only comfort he ever knew in his short life.

“Well kit, I do not think that we shall have to worry about my becoming sick, but you do have a special gift. Before your father sealed me inside you, before insanity could overtake me again, he made me promise to tell you of your heritage, and to give you a gift.” Gently Kyuubi raised his left paw, and with a single extended claw, tapped his chest. A soft glow appeared at the spot as well as in a thin line around the fox’s broad neck, both swiftly replaced with a infinitely delicate golden chain from which hung a beautiful heart shaped crystal, inner depths seeming to reveal spitting scarlet flames spiraling with crashing cerulean waves, as if a firestorm and a hurricane had joined just as lovers do. “He entrusted me with two of the greatest gifts I have received in my admittedly long life. The first was you, and the second, his crystal heart, he trusted me enough to give both it and the story behind it when you were old enough to understand your birthright.”

The child could only stare, shimmering tears slipping down his cheeks unheeded. “My…my father? He left me his… his heart?” “Yes. He was a noble man and he loved you enough that he gave his purest gift to you, as well as passing on to me the knowledge that you too had a crystal heart beating within your chest. Yet if you choose to give your heart away, you, unlike any before you who had this gift, will survive the loss.” “Because of you?” The boy questioned, and the fox replied with a nod. “But I warn you young one, should you choose to sacrifice your heart you may live through it, but you shall wish you hadn’t.”

The boy nodded somberly, nearly ever-present smile disappearing, fading slowly, while the kitsune lounged in silence, watching him with gentle eyes as the child took all the stunning information in. It was only a few moments after that the boy’s quicksilver mind latched onto another question. “Kyuubi-ni-chan? How did my father know that I would have a crystal heart?” “Ah,” the kitsune winked, “All those born with a crystal heart are also born with a very specific mark. At the very base of your neck, hidden by one of my illusions, is a tiny symbol that in the tongue of the ancients and spirits represents both love and sacrifice. That is how he knew.” The golden haired child nodded and smiled before snuggling back into Kyuubi. “Do you not wish to wear your father’s gift?” Kyuubi questioned his young companion and was stunned when the little one barely turned his head to look at him with one blue eye and a Cheshire cat grin. “Naw, you keep it safe for me now. I’m not strong enough to protect it yet. Besides, if father could trust you enough to leave it in such a trickster’s care, then I guess I can trust you enough not to lose it.” And with a wink he turned back around and fell asleep, wrapped in the comforting embrace of silky red fur.

The Kyuubi stared at the boy, eyes wide, then grinned and looked up at the starry sky above him Naruto had created for him before sighing and shaking his head. “Like father, like son I guess” he muttered before laying his head down, curving around himself. He didn’t notice the faint grin appear on his charge’s face before it truly relaxed into sleep.

End Notes:
(1) You will notice several allusions to the Cheshire cat throughout this chapter and into others. I love the Cheshire Cat and I think he fits so well with Naruto… Who knows what is hiding behind both their grin’s. Whoever can spot most if not all the references in this chapter and emails/reviews me will get a short lemon in their honor! Be careful, not all of them are obvious.
(2) “blue and purple fingertip and fist necklaces” - rings of bruises made by hands and fists

***“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not afraid of breaking the rules and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify them, or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the once who do.”

“When you ask god for patience, does he automatically give you patience, or does he give you an opportunity to be patient? If you ask god for courage, does he instantly make you courageous, or does he give you an opportunity to show courage? I, my dear, believe in opportunities.” -Evan Almighty ***
