Way of the Avenger
Chapter One.
“Way of the Avenger”
It was dead quiet around Sasuke’s apartment, nothing but the slight rustle of leaves in the air and the distant howling of wolves. Sasuke took a last look at his neat and tidy apartment, and headed off to lead his “Way of the Avenger”. He slung his backpack over his shoulder, and walked out, locked the door, and buried the key in his deep pockets.
He was off to find Itachi, his brother, for vengeance – vengeance for leaving him with nothing but hatred.
Even though he knew he probably wasn’t ready for Itachi, since he had tested his strength in his last battle with Itachi 4 years ago. He wasn’t physically ready, but he was mentally ready. Even if it meant that he was going to lose his life, at least he had tried…he had tried to bring back the pride in what he believed in.
The dead of night suited well with what Sasuke felt at that moment. He was a person who preferred things as nocturnal as they could be. Maybe they suited with his “emo” character, not that he tried hard to maintain how he looked like to other people. He was just being himself.
He would have no problem navigating, since he had the help of his sharingan. As he was walking to the entrance to the forest that would bring him away from Konoha, he couldn’t help but take a look back at the village he spent his whole sixteen years at. He could see his apartment from here, and also his best friend Naruto’s.
Naruto…God. How can I ever thank that silly dobe enough for all that he’s done to me. I might not show it, but I treasure him so much. I try hard to act like I don’t care, but the truth is, Naruto…he’s just a super great friend. If I leave Konoha-gakure, will I ever meet him again?
When his mind leapt to Sakura, it was as if he could still see the pink wisps of hair. Sakura was an accomplished medic-ninja by now. Sasuke felt something rolling down his cheek. It was wet and salty. “Damn it. I’m not crying, am I? It’s just something an avenger has to go through. If I want to find Itachi and kill him, I have to give everything and everyone important in my life up, and for this reason, I HAVE to kill Itachi.”
He brushed his tears away, emotion unchanged and path all set, and when he set his first footstep on forest grounds, he heard a familiar voice call out, “Sasuke-kun!” He dared not turn around, in fear of what it might do to his mask of strength. But he turned around. And he saw Sakura, wonderful, beautiful…heart-melting Sakura. Sakura stood there, in her usual pink dress. Sasuke clenched his fists in his pockets to keep himself from hugging his best friend. He wasn’t sure…what EXACTLY he felt for this girl. But…it wasn’t love…he just couldn’t put a finger on the matter, except knowing he felt special around Sakura. Sakura had evolved from the annoying fangirl-ish person to a girl who understood him, and had come to be less noisy and naggy around him.
“You’re leaving…?”
Sasuke hated to have to be the one to answer that question. His instincts told him to just walk away without looking back. But he knew he wouldn’t be able to take it, and he knew he owed her an answer.
“Yeah, I guess.”
“You guess?”
“If I answered no, you wouldn’t believe me. If I answered yes, you would have broken down. But yeah, I guess you know where I’m headed, so don’t try to make me stay.”
“I…I. It’s useless to try to make you stay, isn’t it?”
“Yeah, I guess.”
And he was just about to walk off when he felt two weak arms wrap around his waist. They remained there for eternity or so. They didn’t exchange any words, and Sasuke wished that if he could, he would have liked to stay in her arms forever. But he had something more important to do.
After a while, Sakura finally let a whimper escape from her lips. She said softly:
“Remember me.”
He felt her arms slip away, and he didn’t know what was going on inside him, the him that was so strong. That him told himself to grasp on to those two frail arms. But the same him decided against it.
He walked one step, but he could feel her eyes on him, begging him to stay, begging him to look back at her. He turned his head slightly, and looked into her eyes for a long time.
Then he left.
