As a child,
this tune was whispered under everyone’s breathe as grey, miserable clouds
climbed into the sky with promises of bitter, murky water that spoiled the
day’s fun spent playing in the sandbox or on the jungle gym.
Naruto, on
the other hand, was the odd-child-out whenever it rained. The little blond
would sit by the window with a small bottle of apple juice and a plastic baggy
filled with graham crackers, the snack Iruka-sensei had made for that day, and
watched as the sky broke open, thousands of droplets diving to the ground.
Since being
told about Mother Nature through one of Iruka’s stories, Naruto had always
believed that whenever it rained, she was showing Earth’s inhabitants how she
was feeling. If the air was cold and the rain biting as it hit the ground, Mother
Nature was distressed. If the air was warm, the sun playing hide-n-seek with
the clouds and the rain light as it glided down, Mother Nature was content. If
the air was vicious, the wind howling itself hoarse and the rain pummeling
the ground, Mother Nature was
livid.
After
Mother Nature had relieved her feelings to the world and the sun came out,
Naruto would go back to his pictures, little doodles shaped like frogs, snakes,
and slugs, and his classmates with their mocking smiles.

When Naruto was in his sophomore year of high school, an
exchange student moved to Konoha from Oto, and while walking through the
hallways, he heard the whispers of rabid, hormonal girls chirping about how “hot
and mysterious” the newcomer was before becoming possessive over their (non-existent)
relationship.
Naruto didn’t care, precisely, but his classmates weren’t
really trying to be quiet about it. He hadn't even seen the guy ye—
BAM!
"Ow!"
The blond
hated irony, really, he did.

Five years
later, Naruto still watches the rain, enjoying Mother Nature’s show of emotion
as he sits with Sasuke’s arms wrapped around his waist and, instead of apple
juice and graham crackers; they eat Strawberry Danishes with drizzled icing and
Hot Cocoa, a bunch of marshmallows floating around on top.
Working at
his old school and teaching his classmates’ kids, Naruto still hears that
whispered tune, sung by those who wish for the sun. The one thing that makes
him pleased from between now and then is when two of his students, complete
opposites and best friends, sit beside each other and ask him to retell the
story of Mother Nature and her communication to the world.
