Missing Valentine-Naruto

Okay...here's the skinny. For this story to make sense, you must search the archives for trulywicked's original story "Missing Valentine". I have gotten her permission to write this sequel.

T. W. claims to hate Valentine's Day but I wonder...

Beloved Readers...please enjoy and review!

Uzumaki Naruto watched from a high tree top as Uchiha Sasuke sat brooding and watching the sunset. He had a pretty good idea why Sasuke sat on the roof with the typical Uchiha scowl on his face. Part of it may have been due to the continuous hassle of the fan girls and their stalking of his every move. It may have also had something to do with Itachi…as usual. But, it was Valentine’s Day and, in his heart of hearts, he knew that Sasuke missed the little valentines that he had been sending since the Uchiha was eight years old and very alone in the world. Naruto never claimed to be an artist or poet; but, lonely he understood. Ever since the spirit of the Nine Tailed Fox was sealed in his body as an infant, the villagers treated him, at best, as a social outcast or much worse. His mind wandered back to the day he decided to reach out to the Uchiha.

Two boys that sat in front of Naruto had their heads close together so they could talk without being caught by Iruka-sensei.

“Hey…see the dark haired kid? I heard from my parents that he is the only survivor of the Uchiha massacre,” one boy hissed.

“Yeah, I heard my parents talking about that. It was horrible, if the way my folks were talking is any indication. Wonder how he managed to live…” replied the other before Iruka glanced up from the papers he had been grading.

“Reading those scrolls do not need to involve talking,” Iruka-sensei declared before he went back to the papers in front of him.

Naruto glanced over at the raven-haired boy in question. Obsidian eyes glared at the gossiping boys before they turned away. But, Naruto recognized the flash of pain in the dark eyes because he saw it in his own after the many nasty run-in with the villagers.

‘He’s all alone, just like me. Well, he is if you don’t count the fan girl mob that is always trailing after him,’ Naruto thought to himself. ‘I wonder…’

Naruto grinned to himself softly. He spent weeks trying to figure out how he could let Sasuke know that he was not really alone. He snickered when he remembered the day of the “kiss” and how the fan girls almost beat him to a bloody pulp for even touching Sasuke. It was in the briefest of moments, when their lips touched, that he figured out how to show Sasuke that someone understood the loneliness that consumed the soul in the darkest night.

Sasuke frowned as he looked out of the classroom window. It was Valentine’s Day and the fan girl mob was in rare form. They squabbled amongst themselves as to who really loved Sasuke more and whose saccharine sweet valentine he would pick. In an act of intentional defiance, he ended up in detention just to get a little peace and quiet. As was his norm, Naruto got “caught” while performing a prank in order to keep an eye on the Uchiha. Naruto snickered to himself as Iruka-sensei looked up at the clock.

“Alright Sasuke, you can go now. Detention is over.”

Sasuke had gathered his things and was almost out the door when Naruto’s voice stopped him.

“Oi teme…next time, if you find the girls too much of a pain, why don’t you ask a sensei if you can sit next to them after class instead of pitching a fit? All the benefits of detention without the drawback of boredom.”

Sasuke glanced back over his shoulder, “And why should I take the advice of an idiot such as you?”

“Why don’t you yank that stick out of your butt?”

Naruto got up, as if to lunge at the brunette boy. He was stopped by a sharp look from Iruka-sensei. He sat back down and muttered, heatedly, “Teme…” Sasuke left the classroom smirking.

‘Well…not quite what I planned. But, he did leave in a better mood.’ Naruto turned his cerulean blue eyes on his favorite sensei and pleaded silently to be cut loose as well. Iruka sighed and made a shooing motion with his hands. Naruto jumped up and grabbed his things before he ran out of the door. He was pretty sure that the fan girls had been lying in wait for Sasuke and he could possibly get his little chore done before Sasuke arrived home.

Naruto just managed to get out of the window before Sasuke blew in and slammed the door of the apartment that the Hokage furnished for him. He perched on the window ledge and peeked in as Sasuke set his books down and turned to move towards the kitchen. He watched as Sasuke paused and picked up the hastily constructed blue heart and gold glitter valentine with the sour candy taped to the front. It wasn’t his best work but time had been a factor and he knew that he had cut it almost too close. He smiled as Sasuke opened the valentine and read the message he had quickly scribbled inside:

Roses are red,
Violets are blue;
I wish you weren’t alone
‘Cause I am too.

Being alone sucks, doesn’t it? No matter how many people flock around you, it doesn’t make up for coming home to an empty apartment. I’m sorry you have to face that, you don’t deserve it.

Unhappy Valentine’s Day, a secret friend

Naruto smiled at the expression on Sasuke’s face. He watched as Sasuke put the valentine away and continue for the kitchen. He leaped for the sky and headed for his own empty apartment.

Naruto sighed softly as the wind whispered through the branches he perched on. He knew that Sasuke kept all of the valentines he had sent every year. He also knew that the messages were kinda cheesy but he had meant every word. No one should have to suffer as he had; especially Sasuke. He remembered what happened right before they had taken the test to become genin that just re-enforced the importance of the little notes of encouragement.

Naruto burst through the door, splattered here and there with dabs of chocolate, just as Sasuke and Shikamaru gathered their things to leave. He handed a Saran-wrapped kunai shaped chocolate to Iruka and grinned as he declared, “Happy Valentine’s Day, Iruka-sensei!”

Iruka took the chocolate with a smile, “Thank you Naruto. Did you make it yourself?”

“Yup! I ran out of time last night and had to make it this afternoon; so it’s just cooled.”

Iruka chuckled and murmured, “So that’s why you behaved yourself today.”

Naruto caught sight of Sasuke as he watched them with slight envy; “Hey Sasuke. Avoiding the fan girls?” He added silently, ‘Poor guy.’

“I don’t see how it’s any of your business, usuratonkachi.”

‘Whup…here we go,’ he thought before he replied to the verbal jab.

“Sheeze, I try and be nice to you for once and I get that attitude. Maybe, I should yank out that ice pole you’ve got up your ass and hit you over the head with it.”

Sasuke smirked, “What makes you think you could manage it, dobe?”

‘Five…four…three…two…one,’ Naruto counted silently. ‘Now…cue Iruka-sensei.’

Iruka intervened before Naruto could attack the Uchiha and he growled softly, “Teme,” as Sasuke left.

‘Now…cue the fan girl squad,’ Naruto commanded softly in his mind.

“Hey! There he is!” a voice cried out.

“Here Sasuke…I got this for you!” shrieked another voice.

“Move over, you stupid cow! He doesn’t want that trash, do you Sasuke?” bellowed a third.

‘That’s it, ladies. Stall him long enough for me to make my escape,’ he thought gleefully.

Naruto managed to reach his perch on the window sill before Sasuke entered his apartment and started to look for the hidden valentine. Each year, Naruto managed to hide it in a different place. He snickered when Sasuke found it inside the refrigerator. The little dark chocolate shuriken was taped to a blood-red heart, covered with blue glitter. After Sasuke popped the chocolate treat into his mouth, Naruto silently read Sasuke’s lips as he read the message inside:

Roses are red,
Chocolate is brown.
Your scowl’s kinda cute
And so is your frown.

But, I’d like to see you smile just once. I know you don’t feel like it; most of the time, neither do I. But, a fake smile can hide more emotions than a broody scowl. On the other hand, you’d have the fan girls in frenzy; so, on second thought, forget smiling and stick with the scowl.

Unhappy Valentine’s Day, a secret friend

Sasuke closed the valentine with an amused smile and it caused a smile of Naruto’s own to surface.

‘Maybe…some day he’ll be able to give me that smile more freely,’ he thought before he left for home.

The sun slowly lowered and lit the sky ablaze with reds, golds and oranges. Naruto shifted slightly and debated whether Sasuke had waited long enough. There were more valentines over the years. Sasuke must have kept them all and each one showed signs of wear from too much handling. Naruto had gone to Sasuke’s apartment after he left to join Orochimaru. All of them were there except for one. He realized that Sasuke had taken the last one he sent after the mission to protect Tazuna from Zabuza and Haku. Naruto shuddered at the memory of almost losing Sasuke in the final battle. The feeling passed and his mind wandered once more into the past.

FLASHBACK

Team Seven was very grumpy that training ended early. The fan girls swarmed the training field, in an effort to give Sasuke a valentine. When Kakashi finally had enough and decided to move the team to the academy training grounds, even Iruka’s stern and no-nonsense scowls failed to get the point across. Before everyone could disappear, Naruto asked them to wait. He dug around in his backpack and pulled out three Saran-wrapped star shaped chocolates. He handed one to Kakashi, Iruka and Sakura. He gave Sasuke a coupon for free sushi.

“I know you can’t stand milk chocolate, teme. But, since you are my teammate, I just couldn’t not give you something.” Even though it hurt him to do it, he muttered softly so that only Sasuke could hear, “Kakashi-sensei and Sakura-chan would have had a cow if I dared ignore the precious Uchiha heir.”

Naruto waved and left, saying that he needed to do something. He did not, however, miss the slight frown from Sasuke. Even though the apparent callous attitude was meant to hide his feelings, it bothered him greatly. Somehow, he and Sasuke had started out rough but they were friends. He shook his head and bound for his usual place to see Sasuke “find” his valentine.

Naruto patiently waited and Sasuke literally walked into the valentine as he entered the apartment. He had hung it from the ceiling. The valentine was yellow and red glitter; the chocolate was shaped like the leaf symbol. Naruto saw the satisfied smile as Sasuke ate the mint chocolate treat. Naruto repeated the words he had written in the valentine:

Violets are blue;
Chocolate is sweet.
You certainly aren’t;
But, in my book, you can’t be beat.

I sure do suck at poetry, don’t I? Badly written or not, it’s still true. You are the only person who gets a unique chocolate from me every year. Everyone else gets the same thing but I give you something different. Maybe, next year, I’ll tell you who I am. But, for now,

Unhappy Valentine’s Day, a secret friend

Naruto watched as Sasuke shivered in anticipation for the next year’s valentine. Naruto grinned as he headed for his lonesome apartment.

But, Naruto never got the chance to reveal that he was responsible for the valentines. Sasuke left for three long and agonizing years. Now, Sasuke was back and this was his first Valentine’s Day since his return. Naruto decided not to torture the Uchiha any longer. He reached into his weapons pouch and pulled out a kunai with the homemade valentine tied to it. He flung the weapon and waited long enough for the weapon to become embedded in the roof next to Sasuke. As the orange heart, rimmed with blue and gold glitter, fluttered in the evening breeze, Naruto hurried for home. He knew that Sasuke would enjoy the espresso-flavored fox shaped chocolate but would he respond to the red message written inside?

Roses are red;
Violets are blue.
You’ve been gone so long; but
Shall I reveal myself to you?

Hey, welcome back. You want to know who I am, right? Well, think of the other valentines and know that this one is in my colors; except for the red…that’s your Sharingan. If you still can’t figure it out, there’s a little word written on the back of this that should make it clear. ‘Til later,

Happy (at least I hope it will be) Valentine’s Day, a not-so-secret friend
*******************************************************************************
Naruto gulped down the last of his remaining instant ramen. He jumped slightly as someone pounded on his apartment door. Naruto opened it slowly and held his breath. Sasuke stood framed in the doorway, holding the valentine in his hand.

‘He came…he knows it’s been me. But, how does he feel about it?’

The blond tilted his head to the side and Sasuke growled, “Usuratonkachi.”

“Whatcha need te-mph!”

Naruto was interrupted by Sasuke’s mouth clamping onto his. Naruto enthusiastically returned the kiss as the Uchiha backed him into the apartment and kicked the door shut. Naruto’s heart flipped as Sasuke threaded the fingers of one hand through his hair and grabbed his ass with the other. The orange valentine fluttered to the ground and landed face down, showing the single red word written on the back. It read: Teme.
