Summary: Sasuke is an insomniac young student. No one really knows of his illness and so he goes on everyday normally. But on this one night he meets a blonde on the bus, a meeting he’ll never forget.
Sleeping Meds
One… two… four… eight…
Eight… twelve… sixteen… twenty-one…
Twenty-one sleeping pills left.
Twenty-one sleeping dreadful pills left.
Sasuke frowned as he poked at the small blue pills of Lunesta 3mg. They were his current prescription and for some odd reason he found himself even more restless. Sighing to himself the raven safely slid the pills back into its white container before closing the lid, and sitting the bottle upon his computer desk. His gaze fixed upon his laptop screen which displayed his homework for English class, a summary of the novel Macbeth by the master writer William Shakespeare.
The raven brought his fingers above the keypad for a moment before quickly typing away without much thought. Sasuke always held a talent for writing without much thought and some of his very best works resulted from such a nature. Biting his lower lip he continued to write about the mentally of Lady Macbeth and her guilt which basically had eaten her mind and soul. His attention was concentrated within his writing that he didn’t hear his room door open. An older female walked up beside him and asked in concern, “Are you not going to sleep soon? It’s already late and you’re father will begin to bother you.”
Sasuke’s fingers seized as if frozen.
The raven turned his attention to his loving mother. He smiled, “I’m going to bed in a few mom. I just have this essay to finish for class tomorrow.” The woman sighed but nodded adding as she left the room, “Don’t forget to take your sleeping meds.” Sasuke nodded and watched as his mother left the bedroom closing the door as she exited. A frown formed upon his lips. How he hated to lie to his mother but sleeping was just something he lacked even with sleeping meds.
Sleeping meds, he’d been on them for two years and now they’ve become exactly what he’d feared in the beginning, addictive. Now Sasuke found himself taking them every night even though they gave him only a certain level of comfort. Why was Sasuke Uchiha an insomniac? The answer was pretty simple after the death of his best friend or rather lover he’d been robbed of his sleep. After three years of staying up till ridiculous hours of the night the raven finally confronted his mother with the issue. She was shocked at the confession but knew it to be true. After all hearing typing on a computer till 5’o clock in the morning wasn’t something to take lightly.
Again Sasuke is bothered by his opening room door. But this time it’s his father. Annoyingly the raven ignored his father as he said, “Sasuke go to bed. It’s late.” The raven nodded, “I have to finish my homework first.” Sasuke’s father nodded, “Ok but hurry up. Go to bed.” The door closed again allowing Sasuke to let out a sigh of relief. How he hated his father with a passion. For the past eighteen years of Sasuke’s life his father has been cheating on his mother. Even though Sasuke’s mother caught him several times he refused to stop and kept denying any affair. Yes, Sasuke hated his father.
He couldn’t stand him at all. Not his voice, his looks, or even his views. He held such high views on religion that it sickened Sasuke. The raven loathed the religion he was born into and found peace in his secret religion of Wicca. Only his mother knew of his true nature and he loved her for accepting him as himself.
Looking at the black clock beside him he read it silently to himself 1:50 A.M.
Yes, indeed it was another sleepless night for the raven. Saving the Macbeth document Sasuke turned his laptop’s screen off and brought himself up from his chair. Stretching his body a few cracks are heard gesturing his many daily stress. Laying down onto the bed the raven stared at the ceiling. His face displayed no emotion as soft music reached his ears. It was from his IPod. Reaching for the music player he attached the earpieces and closed his eyes listening to the music.
It was Blue Moon by Anna Tsuchiya. A smile formed upon his lips as he imagined scenes to match the song. A large blue moon in the sky with a lonely person in the middle of the street waiting, the person was waiting for someone. He was waiting for the person of his dreams to come only to assure him that everything would be okay.
The song ended and then Every You, Every Me by Placebo started. Sleep began to creep upon the raven causing him to slowly slip out of consciousness. Music continued to play as Sasuke slept and slept and slept.

Sasuke wrote down the Bell Work(1) for his English class and began to work on the quote.
It read, Suicide is committed by high school and college students every day. Explain why you think they chose to end their lives at such a young age.
Sasuke frowned as he felt something prodding against his waist from behind. Irritated the raven whispered to his abuser, “Stop it Kiba or I’ll cut your tongue off with my pen!” the teacher looked up from his paperwork and cocked an eyebrow at Sasuke’s comment. The raven laughed nervously before returning his attention back to the quote. The teacher returned to his work casually. The prodding began again earning an annoyed groan from the raven. Sasuke turned his body around and glared at Kiba, his abuser. The idiot smirked and asked wickedly, “What are you doing tonight?” Sasuke threw his pen at him before turning around and sighing to himself in helplessness.
Why did he have to live like this?
“Hey Sasuke that wasn’t fair” Kiba commented. Yes life indeed wasn’t fair to Sasuke.
Not long after the bell rings signifying the start of the next class. Gathering his books Sasuke said to his few acquaintances, “See you tomorrow.” He turned away from the students who replied happily and walked out of the room heading toward his Math class.
The rest of the day speeded by, resulting to the end of the school day. Sasuke waited at the bus stop where the Q25 and Q34 picked up passengers. Holding his bag against his hip he pushed himself up by the toes wanting to see if a bus was arriving anytime soon. Time was going by quickly and the bus was later than usual. Finally he spotted the Q25 and sighed in relief not wanting to get home late. He tried to stop the bus but found the driver speeding away leaving him there. Sasuke gritted his teeth cursing, “Fuck! Now I’m going to be even more late. I really don’t want to get home after that man.” Suddenly the Q34 stopped in front of him.
Sitting on the bus the raven peered out the window. It wasn’t a bright day but it definitely wasn’t a dull day either. The bus stopped at another bus stop and passengers boarded. Sasuke paid no attention to the boarding passengers and ignored the seat suddenly occupied beside him. The bus began to move again.
“Hey there, you returning from school?” the voice asked Sasuke.
The raven turned his head toward the blonde sitting beside him. The girl smiled at him adding to her statement, “You looked so lonely. Sorry if I’ve bothered you.” Sasuke shook his head, “No you are not bothering me. And yes I’m returning from school. And you?” the blonde nodded.
“My name’s Naruto and yours?” Sasuke cocked an eyebrow at the name and before he could control his mouth, “You’re a boy?” Naruto’s eyes widened and he fought back laughter. Sasuke sighed in defeat and apologized for his rudeness. Naruto answered, “No. No it’s okay I get that a lot. But yes I’m a boy.” Sasuke nodded and turned his gaze back out the window blushing slightly.
“You’re gay?”
The question caused Sasuke to stiffen.
Naruto laughed again, “Sorry. Sorry but your bag… it has rainbow pins”
Sasuke stared at the rainbow pins as his cheeks grew even more red.
“Don’t worry I’m also gay no need to get all tight.” The blonde assured Sasuke.
Sasuke nodded, “You don’t really care what people think of you, do you?” Naruto smiled proudly and answered, “Nope! I mean why should I?” Sasuke nodded at the answer and found himself thinking about his insomnia. Why should he hide such an important fact from his classmates? Why did he hide such an important fact from his family? It wouldn’t matter and it wouldn’t cause them to look at him differently… or at least he’d always hoped it wouldn’t. Sasuke frowned and muttered to himself, “I’m such a freak.”
“Why do you say that?” Naruto asked.
Sasuke chuckled to himself, ‘Did I really say that aloud? Great… just great.’
“You’re pretty…” Sasuke’s eyes widened at the comment causing him to stare at the blonde with blue eyes. Naruto smiled while getting up from the seat saying as he pulled the wire which signified the stop sign, “I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?” The bus stopped and Naruto left with a single wave.
Sasuke stared at the exit as the bus began moving again.
‘I’m pretty?’ Sasuke brought his fingers to his hair and gently began stroking the dark locks with a blush growing upon his cheeks yet again.
Later that night Sasuke popped the small blue pill into his mouth and drank it down with a glass of cold water. He flopped down into his bed and closed his eyes before slowly drifting off to sleep.
The next day Sasuke waited on the bus and saw that the blonde never came.
Frowning to himself he went home and found another sleepless night.
Sleeping meds really played tricks on him and his mind. Reading the side effects on the white bottle the raven wondered, ‘What if I just imagined it all? What if there is no Naruto?’
Sleeping meds… the cause of his dreaded days and nights.
Sleeping meds… what if they were the cause of his illusion?
What if… he was just living an illusion every day?
Sleeping meds…
Sleeping meds…
As he drifted off to sleep yet again he wondered if he’d see the blonde Monday. Smiling at the possibility he hoped that the blonde named Naruto was in fact not an illusion caused by his sleeping meds.
Well that’s another one of my one-shots. But this time this was taken from my own experience. I’m an insomniac student who lives exactly like this. That is why Sasuke is out of character so before you bash me, sorry. The real story is, I take Lunesta 3mg for my sleeping disorder or whatever you wish to call it. One of the side effects are hallucinations which can be increased by depression in patients. I’m depressed most of the time due to family issues and school. A few days ago I met someone on the bus just as Sasuke did and we had a similar conversation to what Naruto and Sasuke shared. He said he’d see me tomorrow and when tomorrow reached… he wasn’t there. So then when I got home and read the side effects I found myself wondering what if I just imagined the whole thing? So now I’m here writing this and waiting for Monday evening… to see if he was just my imagination.
(1) Bell Work is given in the 4 minute span within the beginning of my English class. It’s a little quote or 3 statements that you have to either give an answer to or correct in some form.
