Let us begin…

“Here.”

He couldn’t look her in the face as he handed her the chain. A small silver band hanging from the matching chain a single small daimond planted into the metal. The inside was inscribed, each word chosen with care; Far From Twilight.

She smiled widely and looked at him. That was when she first realized how similar they were. He was red like a lobster and glaring at his feet his thumb rubbed against the knuckle of his index finger as he waited for her to remove it from his fingers.

Gingerly she took the chain from his long fingers. “And far from dawn”

That had been the last time she had scene him smile. After that they had gotten the summons to the front line. She sat here besides him. His eyes wide open his warm unmoving body was pressed against the wall of the trench she covered his body with her own. Neji Nii-san hated to be cold.

Hopefully he would wake up in time. The air was thick and it felt as if it was going to rain. She would have to protect them both. His blood was on her hands just like it was on her pants and in her hair. It was everywhere.

As the time seemed to slow she decided to move. The noise of the fighting had gotten further away. She was stiff and had to move. She sat besides her cousin watching the bright red turn brown on his clothing. She looked at the dark sky and sighed.

Her legs hurt she was nauseous. She wiped her hands on her bloodstained pants. Hoping to remove Neji’s blood from them. The blood just smeared even more almost completely covering her arms.

This war was driving her insane. Last she had heard sound was pushing forward and ripping through Konoha’s lines like wild fire. Snake summons were everywhere and ANBU was cut down to half of their number.

a smile threatened to split her face in half once she read the paper. She’s had to tell him now! Before he was called to duty. And then they would celebrate together with a feast. What they had always feared to dream was coming true. “Nii-san I have to tell you-” Hinata slid the door open quickly only to stop when she saw her father and Tsunade in Neji’s bedroom. “Ah-h ano… S-sorry.”

Neji tuned toward her looking at her with warm eyes. “Hinata-sama?”

Hinata smiled a small smile and waved. “I’ll tell you later when you aren’t busy.” She whispered to him before turning and closing the door.

She hunched over on her hands and knees a few feet away. She heaved again the bile and chunks of a protein bar passed through her lips as she sobbed. All of this noise would get her killed. She was in no condition to fight with a sprained ankle and dislocated arm and leg. She spit out what was left in her mouth hoping to spit out the soured taste as well.

She looked over her shoulder at the pack and sifted through its contents. Finding some morphine a kunai, six shuriken and two useful explosive notes she smiled. Neji Nii-san was always so kind to her.

Even when he was a spiteful child, he’d go out of his way to make sure she didn’t know it was he who had left her a birthday present or brought her favorite kind of melon when she had a bad day. But she always knew, Father never gave her anything but kimonos or barrettes, trying to encourage her to ‘look like a decent woman’ for once. Nii-san left stuffed creatures, worn sweaters and hoodies that he’d long outgrown, sweet things or books by her door.

Nii-san was her joy and delight. When she would be reprimanded by her father or told not to report for dinner she’d go to watch Nii-san train and bring him tea because his presence was more than enough to sustain her. At Night she would sit in bed and wait for him to come to her with a comb and brush, because he could never seem to care for his hair properly so it was left to her to keep it knot free and clean.

Once on a mission to grass they had been paired along with Naruto and Shikamaru for a diplomatic mission. When the lord’s head servant had mistaken Neji for Hinata’s master the boy nearly flipped out be for correcting the man that, Hinata-SAMA was not only his mistress but also heir to the largest and quite possibly most influential clan in all of fire country and mist and that he should feel ashamed for not addressing her as such.

He would never deny her, That always made her smile. No matter how worthless she really was Neji-Nii wouldn’t look at her any differently. No matter what, Nii-san was a constant in her life. Her one and only touchstone.

He gave her all he had at all times, and she would do the same. She huffed and wheezed as she turned up countless piles of earth with a kunai. In this trench, on this battlefield, she would give him a respectful burial. She would do the best she could with her aching limbs and broken body. The chakra she worked through her body would heal it in two days then she could lift him into the grace she began to dig.

For once she was grateful for her family’s insane standards. Every Hyuga must be able to lift at least three times their own weight by the time the reach the age of twelve. Sixty four palms must be master by the age of fifteen and every Hyuga jonin must go on at least three high ranked missions a year.

These standards made every Hyuga battle ready and somewhat experienced when it came to battle and war. Hinata was never exempt from these standards. She could lift four times her own weight and run for ten miles before she needed to stop. She made a point for signing up for countless A ranked missions and made it her business to learn her duties as both a woman and clan head. She would never be seen as inadequate ever again. She would be worthy of her status and of Neji’s silent devotion.

He gave a hundred and twenty percent to her and it would be disgraceful if she didn’t do the same. Using her final knife as a plow she riped up the earth at the bottom of the trench. He would have a decent grave, it was the least she could do for him.

Toying w/ idea of making this into a story then I got lazy. Sorry
