Pairing: Sasu/Naru
Summary: Is reality truly unchangeable or can a ‘What If’ make a difference. Can what is written in the future make a difference in the past?
Letters to the Past
The young Hokage sat at the highest point in a tree above the Hokage monument. His golden hair and fine robs gently swayed in the cooling air. The setting sun danced along the tree tops where he sat. His tanned skin glowed in the low light. Once bright blue eyes were dull and blood shot from the tears that had fallen. So many tears that they seemed to fall like rain and could fill the largest ocean. There were no more tears now though; his eyes were to tired with life to cry any longer. So very tired with the unfair world that only seemed to take things from him.
He sat at the top of the tree with two pieces of paper in his hand. One was a letter that he wrote in hopes to sway the Uchiha into coming back to Konoha… back him. The other was the reason why raven would never be able to read his letter and the reason he had cried till he had no more tears.
In his hand was a letter and a mission report. One paper of hope and the other one of death.
He was a Hokage now and had fulfilled one of his life’s goals. The other goal he had was also fulfilled, but not in the way he had hoped.
He had brought the Uchiha back to Konoha.
He had heard news of the raven’s location and sent his best Anbu team to recover him. As Hokage he had an obligation to his village and couldn’t go himself. He had wait at the gates for the team to return with the raven. What he never expected was to see the Uchiha being carried into the village, lifeless. The moment his blue eyes landed on the unnaturally pale Uchiha, he felt something within himself break.
As the Hokage he was the one to speak at the funeral. The Uchiha’s name was added to the memorial stone next to the countless others that had fallen. This day was the hardest day of his life and that’s why he was now sitting in the tallest tree, on the highest branch. He watched as the sun sunk lower now touching the horizon. He was waiting, waiting for this day to be over, because when it ends it means that he has return to being the strong leader this village needs. He would be that leader. He would be strong so that others could be strong too.
But for now he would be weak. Until the sun disappeared from the sky and the day ended he would be weak, because he lost the one he loved. The only one he ever loved.
Blue eyes watched as the last slivers of sunlight touched to earth. He stood up as if it would buy him a little more time, a little more day, a little more weakness.
He folded the missions report and placed it in his pocket. He looked at the letter one last time before raising it toward the setting sun. As the last sprinkle of sun disappeared, he released the letter to the wind. It was swept up and away on the night’s breeze.
‘If only I had given this to you sooner. If only I could have spoken these words before you left so may years ago. Would you have stayed? Would you have been mine? Would you be alive now?’
He watched the letter fly higher as the words that were written ran through his mind.
My friend, thou life’s sorrows burden you; let them not dull your spirit.
Let them not bring you heart sadness, when this world has so much happiness to be had.
Live you life without the constant shadow of past grief.
Embrace each day with a willingness to move on and be more then you were the day past.
Thou people come and go from us, let us always remember we are cared for.
Love is something we always carry with us, no person can steal that.
Your heart cries out in pain, because you lost people that were dear to you.
Do not fall down, but instead stand with the power you have within you.
Draw strength from your friends, for we care for you.
You are dear to us; let this fact never be forgotten.
My friend smile for you are loved and will never be without love even on the loneliest night.
For the night’s darkness only lasts till the rising sun chases it away.
So until your sun rises keep strong, for you are loved.
And will always be loved… by me.
Yours always,
He watched until the letter until it was no longer visible in the dark sky, then turned back toward the village. The day was over and he was needed again. He would lead his village and be strong for them, but the ‘what if’ was still there. It was hidden in the darkest and most secret part of his mind.

A young raven-haired teen made his way back to the Uchiha complex hands stuffed in his pocket and an expressionless look on his face. The sun had just set and darkness was covering the world. He had been released from the hospital after they decided that he was well enough. The fight he had on the roof of the hospital still rang clear in his mind. He had underestimated the dobe’s power and almost lost. Was the dobe really that much stronger or was he becoming weaker like his brother said.
He arrived at the mansion and started walking up the path to the door. This village was making him weaker. His friend were making him wea…
He train of thought was cut off as a strong wind blew a piece of paper in his face. Annoyed he grabbed the thing and was about to through it away when he got a weird feeling. For some reason curiosity got the better of him and he took the paper inside. He uncrumpled the paper and read what was written. His eye widened slightly as the words registered in his mind. It was as if this letter had been written to him. The penned words went straight to the darkest place in the raven’s heart.
Onyx-eyes scanned the area outside his window to see if this was a joke. He could not see or sense anyone in the area so this was obviously not planned by anyone. Was it just by accident that he found this?
The writing in the letter looked some how familiar. Who ever wrote this had very poor penmanship.
Was this letter a practical joke or was this truly what someone felt for him? How did he himself feel about this. Obviously he wasn’t disgusted or even mad, more like just a little shocked that someone had seen through his mask. But out of everything written in the letter one thing confused him the most.
‘Why is this dated 5 years from now?’
End?

A/N: Okay this was just an idea I got in my head and for some reason the more I thought about it the more it reminded me of the movie ‘The Lake House.’ I’m not sure whether I’m going to continue this or leave it as a oneshot. I guess it really depends if anyone is even interested in reading a story like this.
