Lullaby
Naruto hadn’t even known what need was until Iruka-sensei had come to him.
It had been in a drunken haze that he’d found himself waking up surrounded by warm colored arms. He’d watched Iruka-sensei sleep for hours, slowly working over everything that had happened the night prior.
And everything that had been said.
I need you…please….Naruto, my Naruto….
He had blushed then, not knowing exactly what to do about it.
But he needn’t have worried. The moment Iruka-sensei had come back to himself, he’d looked properly shamed and left his bed without a word.
He had allowed Iruka-sensei to leave that morning because he didn’t believe it would happen again.
Had he known even for a moment that he’d encouraged Iruka-sensei’s behavior in his silence, he would have grabbed and shaken sense into the chuunin.
The Lullaby syndrome is what they, the other older shinobi, called it.
He still didn’t fully understand it. But Yamato-sensei had explained it to him more than well enough; the Lullaby syndrome wasn’t something easily spotted. Mostly it was confused for being loose or the want of attention.
Iruka-sensei came back to him once a week, when night was a dead blanket around their affair. And he’d let him in, into his small apartment, into his arms, into his bed.
He never knew need like what Iruka-sensei showed him.
It burned when he gazed at Iruka-sensei, like something deep inside him was sparked to life every single time doe eyes slid to rest on him.
Sometimes he wondered just which of them had the demon inside them.
Iruka-sensei lost control so easily when they had sex. And he was loud. Sometimes so loud that he had to clap a hand over the chuunin’s mouth so that his neighbors wouldn’t complain.
And sometimes he’d even wanted to stop, to stop wanting to touch so very badly.
But Iruka-sensei was as undeniable as he was insatiable.
When he’d learned that he wasn’t the only one Iruka-sensei had been fucking with, he was hurt and angered deeply. He’d gone to Iruka-sensei’s home and taken him there instead of his place like usual.
He’d asked why Iruka-sensei wanted to be with other people, why he wasn’t good enough.
Iruka-sensei hadn’t answered. And he’d left.
He wasn’t surprised though when Iruka-sensei came back to him that night to ride over him like he so loved. It had been perfect.
“You can blame me sensei,” he said. “I don’t mind if it makes you feel good again.”
Iruka-sensei had broke down, had sobbed, begged for forgiveness.
Iruka-sensei needed more than Naruto could give. That’s why he saw other men.
The Lullaby syndrome wouldn’t let him stay the night. It made him look away every time Naruto pressed a kiss to his cheek. It made him stiffened when Naruto pulled him into a hug.
It made him cry when they were finished.
After that night, he had vowed to help Iruka-sensei forget. He started following him around, waiting for him outside the Academy to walk him home, carrying home his groceries, treating him to ramen.
He tried to take up all his time.
Iruka-sensei seemed politely flattered by his fascination with him.
And it hurt because Naruto loved him so very badly. Every night they met, he’d hold Iruka-sensei for just a little while longer, trying to make him see that it was alright to stay.
“I’ll still be here when you wake up,” he said against Iruka-sensei’s cheek.
Iruka-sensei looked away, blinking wetly as he stared at the wall. His body was stiff, but shuddering still in the aftermath.
“Don’t…”
“All of us will still be here when you wake up,” Naruto insisted, holding Iruka-sensei tighter.
Neither said anything for a long while until, “I want to stay.”
Naruto closed his eyes and didn’t watch as Iruka-sensei slipped away from him and dressed, leaving without a word.
The Lullaby syndrome was something that drove certain people to seek out their loved ones, to spend time with them, sleep with them, touch them, anything to make sure that they were still alive, that they wouldn’t leave.
Older shinobi said that being with their special people helped them sleep, like a lullaby so they made it through the night without nightmares of abandonment.
Iruka-sensei could want to stay all he wanted. But it was the need, the Lullaby that drove him from warm arms.
Naruto hadn’t even known what need was until Iruka-sensei had come to him.
And he wished he still didn’t.
