~Chapter One~

Side of a Bullet

‘pant, pant, pant’

A pair of infinite obsidian eyes searched along the rooftops of the nearby buildings as the winter chill nipped against the owner of those eye’s pale face.

Sweaty strands of equally dark hair hung limply against the male’s alabaster cheeks and forehead as gasps of exhaustion suddenly stilled when two shadows; located no more then fifty paces away; grew thick like clouds of smoke only to disappear in the blink of an eye.

Ashen colored lips thinned into a tight angry line as two figures dressed in darkly clad outfits appeared where the shadows had been.

His ‘hunters’ had found him.

He wouldn’t be able to get away this time. Not in his current condition.

There had originally been seven pursuers and he had been able to take out five, but that was prior to the long chase and before the various wounds that now littered his bloodstained body.

The dark-eyed male reached a battered hand up to grab at his sword that was located in the sheath along his spine, but the sharp pain in his side made him nearly cry out.

He glimpsed down and noticed that the makeshift bandage around his torso was soaked completely in blood.

He couldn’t last much longer.

‘Tch’ Sasuke Uchiha ignored the weariness of his fatigued legs and tensed for an escape.

He took a calming breath before his eyes widened slightly as the taller of his trackers; without even looking in his direction; pointed a shiny piece of metal that resembled that of a gun towards his head.

BANG!

The echo of a silver bullet wheezed past Sasuke’s ear, narrowly missing it’s target as the raven haired teenager swiftly spun out of the way and sped across the snow covered roof at a velocity that no human being could ever possess.

But it wasn’t enough.

“He’s starting to slow down,” The one who had shot the gun spoke in an unhurried tone as he and his silent female partner continued their chase of the young male.

The sound of the raven’s booted footsteps skidded to a halt in the slushy snow as Sasuke reached the edge of the rooftop and looked across at the neighboring one that belonged to a small café called the ‘Good Morning’ café.

Just as he braced himself for the leap across the six foot gap that was between him and the other rooftop, another gunshot exploded through the air.

The young Uchiha screamed in pain as he felt fire burst in his shoulder.

His outstretched hand missed the edge of the roof and his body collided with the side of the café.

He fell to the wet alleyway below with a limp thud.

Sasuke’s two pursuers glided down to the fallen raven soundlessly.

The female walked over and leaned down to grab Sasuke’s bruised and bloody chin in an iron like grip.

A growl escaped the pale lips as the Uchiha opened an obsidian eye to glare at his captors.

“You’re brother has a nice bounty on your head, kid. You’re going to make us a lot of money,” The tall male flashed Sasuke a condescending smile as he began to rustle in his coat pocket.

The soft sound of the song ‘Open Arms’ by Journey poured from an old jukebox while a blond waiter finished mopping the wooden floors of the ‘Good Morning’ café.

Well toned muscles rippled along his exposed forearms as he grabbed the handle of the mop and turned it so that the mop head was now face to face with his bright cerulean blue eyes.

A smile spread across his full lightly chapped lips as he twirled the mop away from his body in a sweeping move. As the chorus of the song came on he brought it back and dipped it, singing to the dripping mop head.

“So now I come to you, with open arms!
Nothing to hide, believe what I say!
So here I am with open arms!
Hoping you’ll see what your love means to me
Open arms…”

Naruto Uzumaki held the mop close to his chest, singing in a voice that should never be heard in public when somewhere in all that noise his sensitive hearing picked up the sound of a scream.

Quickly the blue-eyed teen went over to the jukebox and turned it off, his senses now on full alert.

Naruto closed his eyes and stood completely still while he focused on the sounds around him.

It was completely quiet in the petite sized café except for his calm breathing and the sound of his heartbeat.

Wait. There.

The blond turned in the direction of the back door in the far room and focused his hearing there.

The scurrying of rats that lived in the large garbage bin where he dumped the café’s trash. The sound of muffled voices that echoed off the walls of the alley. He could sense that three people were outside in the alley, but no heartbeats were heard.

They were alive, but with no heartbeats?

Naruto opened his eyes and tilted his head to the side in confusion.

‘They’re not human? They’re definitely not lycanthropes, so what else can they be?’

He walked towards the back room and put his ear against the door.

He caught a part of the conversation outside.

“ …-es, the little bastard killed the other five, but we have him now. He wasn’t as good as everyone says he is,” A male’s voice said.

The man’s voice was accompanied by the sound of a something hard hitting against something solid, followed by a muffled whimper and shuffling in the snow.

“He deserves to die for what he’s done, even if he is the master’s younger brother,” A woman’s apathetic voice replied.

Naruto pulled back from the door and a frown crossed his features.

'What the hell is going on? Whose master’s young brother? Wait. Could they be vampires? I remember Iruka telling me about them, but I’ve never met one before,' Naruto thought to himself.

He debated on whether or not to go out there and get involved in something that obviously wasn’t his business.

Iruka had told him that he shouldn’t get caught up in other people’s or species’ affairs. That it was better for him and the others to keep a low profile so as not to give away ‘who’ or ‘what’ he and the other’s really were.

He scratched the whisker marks on his golden colored cheeks in thought but the sound of a strangled cry and a sharp-tongued curse made him turn to the door.

Naruto focused on the outside conversation again and heard a young male’s voice. By the heavy panting and pain filled tone the other made, the blond figured him as the one being beaten on.

“….pant….You didn’t sound so confident while I was ripping out your partners’ throats,” The smooth voice held arrogance even if his words were gasped out between harsh breaths.

“Why you little-!” The first man’s voice growled just before the sound of footsteps and kicking could be heard.

But the one who had spoke didn’t make a sound.

Naruto bit his lip in worry.

If he didn’t do anything, then the one out there would die.

‘Or uh, die ...again. Damn, I wish I would have listened to Iruka when he explained about vampires,’

His mind set on his decision, the blond squared his shoulders as a growl slipped past his lips and he unlocked the door.

He hoped that Iruka wouldn’t be mad at him for what he was about to do.

Or what he was about to reveal.
