What Iruka thought was…
“Why?”
“Why didn’t you take me with you?”
He kneeled before his lover buried to his chest in rubble. Covered in a coating of dust and blood.
“…leave this to me.”
He had said it so confidently. Like any other time.
“But you knew…deep down you knew and you sent me away. I could have helped.”
Iruka twisted the ring on his left hand. It had been less than two months since they exchanged rings.
Twist, twist, twist.
“Why didn’t you take me with you?”
He pulled the ring from his finger and slipped it into his mouth.
“I’m a part of this Village.”
He gave a little smile at his own answer.
Iruka bent down and gently pulled Kakashi’s head to his.
For a long moment the overwhelming pain was too much and tears slid freely down his face.
Then Iruka kissed him, and with that final kiss he slid the ring into Kakashi’s mouth, sealing
their future with him forever.

“I’m proud of you…so very proud.”
“Why?”
