No one should be alone on Christmas
Iruka always loved Christmas. He liked the tradition, how the city would be all decorated and most people would be happier. He also liked very much cooking and had a whole book on Christmas recipes.
The reality of the ninja life, full of danger and death would be put aside if only for a while and everybody could experience a little magic. The teacher remembered Christmas Eve with his family, even if he was very young then. Remembered eating together with his parents, decorating the tree, the next morning opening the presents and most of all, the utter love that permeated the air at this time of the year.
Now, when an adult, he still enjoyed the celebrations. Secret Santa, and little parties on his friends house before the actual night, the kids carol singing at the academy and spending Christmas Eve with Naruto.
This year, unfortunately, the celebration had a bitter taste to Iruka. Naruto was off, training with Jiraya and he would be alone. He had all the other things yet, but it was not the same since the one he felt was his family was not there. Friends had invited him over their houses but was it felt wrong.
He wasn’t going to cook, since there was no point, but sitting around staring at the tree and little candles he used as decoration spread over the house felt weird. So out of habit he made ginger cookies, some eggnog and baked salmon. Since he was cooking, he couldn’t help and laid down the table as well, becoming even more depressed as he put only one plate.
Trying to distract himself, the long haired man, sited on his couch to watch The Grinch. By the end of the movie it was close to midnight and he came to sit on the table and prepare to eat. He sat and looked at the food, the candles, the table cloth with little snowmen. And the expression on his face showed how sad and alone he felt...

Kakashi laid on his futon, all long relaxed limbs. Dark ninja uniform, hitae ate on his forehead covering his left eye, mas k in place and Icha Icha in hand. It was like any other night for him except for the book on his hand having a red cover instead of orange. Inside, the story told of how Santa reward and punished the adults very differently of the kids. Thematic porn was something that only Jiraya could think about.
He closed his book. It was almost ten and time for his only Christmas tradition. Having spend most of his life alone made he not really care about celebrating the special night. He went to parties, teased his friends by giving bad presents at Secret Santa and enjoyed the good food, but it was no big deal for him.
But he had one special thing he always did at Christmas Eve. One urge in which he indulged every year. He went out, and secretly checked on the people he cared. The Copy Ninja would to their houses just to see that they all were fine, and breathing.
So if the grey haired man wanted to get back home by midnight and finish his reading he really should start his round now. But right before leaving, Kakashi retrieved in his closet a square package, wrapped in silver paper with a red ribbon he intended to drop on his last stop.

Visiting the important people in his life had warmed even his “I’m-too-cool-to-be-emotional” heart. The happy aura of a peaceful time. He could never wish for a better present.
And then he passed in front of the Uchiha compound. The dark shadow of the jounin stopped. Images of his student flashing inside his mind. Suddenly, he was not so calm anymore. It hurt and made he feel like he failed. Not just team seven was now dismantled, Sasuke was on the enemy side. Naruto, was broken hearted and far away. The thought of the blond young shinobi brought Kakashi back to where he would go next.
***
The infamous ninja landed silently by the window of Iruka house. He peered inside the sensei’s home, masking his chakra so the chuunin wouldn’t know he was there. And then he saw the long haired man sitting by his table. Food, candles and a nice table cloth adorning it, but a sad expression was on the young face. He thought this could happen when he passed by the Uchiha Compound. Remembered that Naruto would spend Christmas Eve with his favorite teacher and this year, he wasn’t there.
He could feel the aura of loneliness surrounding Iruka. He went out this night to see if all the persons he cared for were fine and breathing. But also, to see them happy was important. And Iruka was not. He couldn’t go away and leaving him like this. No one should be alone on Christmas.
***
Iruka was staring at the flame of candle, mind wandering on the past, when suddenly from the ceiling jump one and only Hatake Kakashi in the middle of his kitchen startling the chuunin.
‘How did he…’
“Yo!” greeted Kakashi as if it was very normal to enter someone’s house uninvited and not even use the door.
“Ahn..Good Night, Kakashi-sensei.” The puzzled look suited Iruka much better. “H-How can I help you?”
Now, normally the teacher would lecture the jounin about how unpolite it was to invade peoples home, especially in a holyday, but knowing Kakashi it wouldn’t have any effect on him beside amusement at his costs and he really didn’t felt like it right now.
“Well, you see, I was really not in the mood to make dinner tonight and there is no restaurant open. So I thought… ‘Maybe Iruka-sensei wouldn’t mind if I joined him for supper.’ You are known for your being a good cook.”
“Hmm, yes…I guess.” The younger man said eyeing suspiciously his “guest”. “Well, I suppose it’s alright since I have all this, and wouldn’t eat all alone.Let me get another plate.” And Kakashi bugging and teasing him, despite irritating, would get him out of this miserable mood.
***
While they ate, Kakashi would joke with about his fellow comrades or tease Iruka at any opportunity he got, just to see the other man blushing. Gratefully the company and the small tingle of alcohol from the eggnog increased Iruka’s mood.
After finishing their meal the Copy Ninja thought that was a good moment to give his present to the long haired man. He’d seen year after year Iruka get dolphin’s themed gifts from everybody and even tough he wanted to give something special to him, he couldn’t help but made a joke out of it still. Which was, in reality, a defense mechanism, since he could pretend it was meant to be a gag gift if Iruka didn’t liked it.
While the brunette took out the dishes, Kakashi gathered the courage to give him the present.
“Iruka…”
“Hm?” said the sensei turning around to look at the pale man.
“This is for you…” he handled the square package to the other man. “I am not as bad mannered as everybody says, you know.”
“Thank you, Kakashi-sensei. You really shouldn’t have…” said the surprised chuunin. Kakashi just shrugged and motioned for him to open the present.
Inside the square box was a plushy dolphin with a scar across his nose and a hitae ate with a heart instead of the symbol of the Leaf Village.
Kakashi expected a few reactions from Iruka. Frustrated but yet polite enough to thank him. A little pissed off maybe. Perhaps throwing the dolphin at his face but he never imagined the little blushing, when he seemed to be a bit embarrassed at the gift and the somber look that came afterwards. Oh boy, he did not wanted for Iruka to be sad again. He messed up.
***
Another dolphin themed gift… But this was different. It wasn’t something from someone with little imagination. It wasn’t out of laziness, even if the person who had give it to him was well known for this characteristic. It was probably something he had to ask someone to do specifically for him. Was it suppose to mean more then just a Christmas gift? The thought of The Famous Copy Ninja, genius of his generation, living legend making a move on him made Iruka blush. Even if he had fantasized about it for a little while now…
And then, another completely different emotion came to him. Memories of a very young Naruto giving to him, on a Christmas Eve a drawing of dolphin with a scar on it’s nose and a orange fox. And there it was: the empty nest crisis. It was really silly of him to be so depressed in such a joyful time of the year, but he couldn’t help it.
***
He had to do something about it. It was not like he was the most indicated person to consol someone, much more the other way around. Still, the expression on the man face was heartbreaking. So he tried.
“Hey! What’s the matter? If you didn’t like the present you always can change it…”
“Oh God! No! It really is not about it! I really liked it. Thank you!”
“So what’s wrong? You seemed so sad.”
“It just… brought memories. Naruto gave me a drawing of a dolphin years ago. I guess Christmas makes me sentimental. I feel a little lonely since he’s gone. I’m sorry” He said while seating back on the chair.
Kakashi felt bad. Iruka wasn’t meant to be sad. He should always look happy. He was cute when embarrassed too and he could only imagine what a vision he must be feelling the pleasure Kakashi wanted to give him. But sad, no…
Screw fear of rejection. He couldn’t stand a lonely Iruka.
***
He felt more than saw the jounin coming to stand by his side. And then a hand put on top of the table a dark piece of cloth. Kakashi’s mask. His heartbeat started to accelerate and even though he wanted to, he didn’t turn to look at him, staring very still to the plushy dolphin. He would not invade the other privacy. He felt the jounin starting to move again, kneeling by his side. A pale hand touched his chin and turned his face toward him.
Soft lips landed on his in a very tender kiss.
“You don’t have to be alone. Let me be with you Iruka.”
He stared at the most gorgeous face he would ever see. The scar on Kakashi’s left eye ending on his cheek. The small, but yet, very masculine nose and light pink, thin lips. He felt like crying. It was the most special gift he could get. Sliding from the chair to also stand on his knees in front of Kakashi, he put both hands on each side of his face and kissed him.
***
Iruka was kissing him. As soon as he realized that he started to correspond and embraced the younger man waist as Iruka’s own arms wrapped around his neck.
“Iruka… I’ve wanted this for so long. Please, let me…”
“Yes, I hoped for this as well…”
Kakashi carefully laid Iruka on his back on the floor and it was all gentle from that moment on. Their hands softly caressing each other. The kisses. The clothes being discarded on the kitchen floor.
Their bodies danced together at the sound of the whispers of each other names and promises of never letting either one fell alone anymore.
Because no one should be alone on Christmas.
