It was always that one son of a bitch who destroyed it. Destroyed his peace. Always.
Sasuke was an incurable narcissist who wanted to be alone on holidays. No, he wasn't one of those sad beings called humans who looked for unity and comfort. Who took holidays as an excuse to be jolly, forgive and forget and a reason to say things they always wanted to say.
The first person who did it was great. Now it was cliché and just sad. Why holidays were more special than other days, Sasuke couldn't understand. He ran a hand through his hair and looked upon the computer screen. The radiation already hurt his eyes.
Taking a deep sigh he looked at his desk. It was clean and perfect. His assistant must have cleaned it while he was away on a meeting yesterday. It was a nice gesture, but not needed. His office walls where made by glass, transparent. He could see who was walking by, who was entering. Anyone who passed by could see him, what he was doing, who he was talking to. That sometimes contributed to his stress, sometimes saved his ass.
Sasuke wouldn't admit this normally, but this is the season of confessions, right? Sometimes when he was bored or stressed (Sasuke is always stressed, sometimes more, sometimes less) he would play up different scenarios. What if a plane crashed in just their building? What if someone went bananas (no, he wouldn't use that word either, but we won't tell anyone, right?) and started shooting at everyone? Who would die first?
He can count up almost one hundred scenarios. It's sick but it helps him get through some of the roughest days.
Days like these. It was 31st December. Meaning, one day from now it was going to be a brand new year. Or more like six hours and forty-five minutes from now. It is a matter of perfection and Sasuke wants to be perfect. Alone and perfect.
He works every day, rarely takes a vacation. He is one of the top lawyers in the country and he deserved to make some demands. His only demand is that he should be left alone.
As you might have guess from now, Sasuke isn't your ordinary lawyer with three portrays, one of his family, one of his girlfriend or wife and the one with the kid or the pet, making women go “awh what a sweetie” and increasing you're chances of getting laid whether you have a girlfriend or wife.
No, he is the one that makes his younger co-workers (female) blush and instantly wish that they were doing him on his desk. He is the one those fat lawyer with so much child support to pay wants to be. He is the one that the gossipers whisper about, wondering how long it really was since he got laid.
He has a few associates he sometimes calls his friends. Even Sasuke can feel too lonely and in need for social interaction. They and many more, called him over. “Lets celebrate New Years together.” “You shouldn't be alone, you'll end up killing yourself.”. Truth? He would hang himself before the countdown if he went with them.
So what did he do? He told them he would go to his friends. Already busy. Who is this friend they would ask and he would say a name. Always a different name. Why did he want to be alone one asked him with a clear voice and Sasuke froze as he held his phone. She saw right through his lie. How?
Now is not the time for a how, it's time for a why. Why did he want to be alone? “Because when I'm in such a big crowd I get anxiety. Sometimes a panic attack, it's a disorder.” He didn't like the people going to her party told her that.
They hung up without hard feelings and Sasuke had thought about it a long time. He knew that somewhere out there were people who maybe couldn't relate to him, but they didn't care. They treated him as if he was no-one else but just another pretty face.
Looking down to his watch he saw that it was six p.m. Time for him to leave work. When he put on his coat and scarf he noticed that most of the employees had already left the building. He wished his blushing assistant a New Years blessing (manners) and walked to the elevator. Sasuke hated elevators. Hated their music and the fact that you could smell how the person next to you smelled. It was so narrow. Luckily this elevator was empty save for one short costume dressed man. Bald. He smelled chicken.
When they exited at the same floor the bald man wished Sasuke a 'Happy New Year.' Sasuke only looked at the man before quickly walking out of the building. It had started to snow around three p.m. today. This made Sasuke very glad. The man liked snow.
Walking along the streets of New York, he took in the appearances of the buildings and people walking along with him. He wondered, did he ever meet one of these people? Will he ever meet one of them? Are they happy? What secrets do they have?
One wouldn't think that Sasuke fantasizes this much. He read somewhere, or heard a song or something where the words 'happy people don't fantasize'. It made sense, he guessed. But even when he was happy he fantasized, dreamt himself away without sleeping.
He walked into a shop to get some food. Milk, chocolate, bread, candy, sprite and some cigarettes. It was New Years right? Wasn't part of the evening about freeing yourself? Sasuke didn't smoke, but something made him buy them. What, why, how come? He honestly didn't know and he didn't care.
Walking out of the shop to the same street, he saw it was still snowing. Irritated people pushed on his shoulder, people in a hurry ran past him. Soon he was going to be home, alone. No-one pushing on him, hurrying to get past him.
It was an abandoned road to the left and he took it. Now he could hear that cozy sound his shoes made when they walked on the white snow. Or was it the snow that made that sound or was it both? Ah, details... not so necessary. His teacher, Kakashi, always told him so. Turning another left and then a right he was home. Unlocking the gate door to his apartment, hearing the new sound his shoes made to the new ground made him walk faster. He didn't like that sound.
He would have taken the elevator, but it was broken. It didn't matter though, he was in his apartment in what, two minutes? Looking at his hallway clock he figured that it had taken almost an hour to get home from the office. He blamed it on the long line in the store. Sasuke's message button blinked red. Taking off his coat before pressing the messages button he heard how his mother, then his brother, then his aunt and uncle, then aunt and uncle before it going very silent. Sasuke stood beside it now, taking off all of his outer wear when he heard a familiar voice. “Sasuke, I know yo-” Beep. Sasuke deleted it.
Tonight is the last night of the year. Sasuke refused to let that voice be the last one he heard. He called his brother. After hearing him say “Yes Sasuke?” in that weird monotone voice that Sasuke probably spoke with too and hung up. Itachi didn't bother calling again.
Lying down on his couch in the living room watching a random movie, he soon fell into a light sleep. It soon turned deeper and when he woke up by a ringing phone, it was eleven p.m. His mother. He might as well take it.
“Yes?”.
“Sasuke, dear... I ... I just wanted to wish you a happy new year. When are you visiting?” Her voice was sweet and he could almost hear the amount of wine she had filled herself with.
“I don't know. When I have time I guess.” He never enjoyed talking to her. Not over the phone. Words only got so plastic with her over the phone.
“Yes, or when your company sends you over for overworking.” Her following laughter always made him want to smash the whole apartment. He once did that, only it was her apartment. She never laughed again unless situations like these arose. They both blamed it on the wine.
“Happy new year mom.” He said in that monotone voice that was so hated. That's why he used it.
“Oh... Yes. Take care of yourself.” Her voice hinted at remorse, a sorry that was never told. But she spoke mostly with arrogance. They both hung up the same time.
What to do now? There was never anything on the TV, he wasn't hungry or sleepy. He took his mothers unspoken advice and opened a bottle of red wine. Poured it in one of his nicest glasses. Sat down outside on the balcony and opened his cigarettes. Of course he knew why he bought it every year, but it still hurt to think about it. When he had smoked half of the cigarettes in the package and most of the wine he sat down in front of his laptop.
Fucking Facebook. Always sent him e-mails about someone tagging her or invites to different shit. Why did he get it? Right, everyone at work had it. Tapping some on the keyboard he waited until it was ten to midnight. When the time came he opened his white wine and went out to the balcony. Some of the neighborhood kids where out playing while their parents stood with a bottle of champagne in their right hand and a cigarette in their left. Just like Sasuke.
After almost five minutes passed Sasuke heard it. Someone knocked on his door. 'Okay Sasuke calm down, it doesn't mean anything', he told himself. Walking slowly towards the door, making the person on the other side of the door knock again. Taking a deep breath he opened the door, not bothering to look who it was. He already knew, he always knew.
There was always that one son of a bitch who destroyed it. You know, the blonde, blue eyed dork who he went to school with? Okay, so he wasn't a dork, but he was to Sasuke. A dobe.
He was always smiling. Always. Right now too. Standing there, smiling. He wore pretty casual clothes, jeans and a jacket. His eyes looked at him a little glassy.
“Hey... Sasuke... I know you probably didn't listen to my message... It's cool. I just wanted you to know that I was coming. I.. I don't want to celebrate New Years without you. I... I think I'm in love with you.” His voice slurring from the alcohol he drank on the plane, holding on to the wall he looked with hopeful eyes at Sasuke.
Yes. It was cliché and just sad. But it always made his heart melt in a disgusting way that made him want to throw up.
“I know Naruto.” Sasuke looked at the shocked man and frowned. Did they really have to do this every year? His mind was dizzy from all that wine, but Naruto was lost.
“Do you love me?” The blonde man asked, almost accused. “Because if you don't, I just wasted a shitload of money on nothing and that sucks 'cause it's new yeaa...”
Well, what would the most cliché ending to this be? A kiss. So here you go, they kissed.
