AN: This story is set during modern times, so if you don’t like AU stories, please leave now. Still here? Well, I’ll continue then. A lot of the Rookie Nine are sophomores in high school, only a number of them are juniors. Everyone is between the ages of fifteen and seventeen, though I don’t think anyone is yet seventeen, so maybe just between fifteen and sixteen. Also, most of the kids attend the same school.

Chapter One
New School, Same Problems
“Hey guys!”
“What do you think Takatsuki-sensei is going to make us do today? He has such a strange. . .”
She shut out the rest of the sounds and refocused her attention onto the task. She walked slowly past the lockers of the school’s hallway, a strap of her walnut-brown knapsack hanging loosely on her left shoulder and her books tucked into the crevice of her right arm.
Unexpectedly, a pair of hands that she didn’t see until the last minute pushed her to the side. She dropped her books to the floor. Blinking slowly at the spilt books by her feet, she bent down and picked up her belongings one by one. She was hoping no one would notice her embarrassing moment . . . Too late. Her cheeks took on an involuntary redness when she heard the low giggles from the students.
“Oh God.” She whispered.
“Do you need any help miss?” She looked up to meet a pair of kind white-lavender eyes. Long milk chocolate hair swept into one long braid fell down his back. He had an air of arrogance to his persona. He was dressed in the school’s uniform: dark tailored pants, polished shoes and a dark jacket with gold buttons.
“Um, yes I do need some help. Thank you,” she said softly. He smiled and bent down to grab each of her books. With everything picked up, the pair rose to their feet.
“I assume that you are the new kid that I have been hearing about, am I correct?” the brunet asked.
“Yeah, I am.” She replied with a gentle smile. He nodded and returned the gesture.
“So did you find your locker?”
She nodded. “Yes.”
“So where were you going with all of these books? You know, we do have small breaks between our classes. You do not need all this.” She could feel her cheeks flush as she thought about what the brunet told her. Why didn’t she think of that when she brought all those books out with her? She was able to go to her locker between classes at her old school so why did she think it would be any different?
“Oh, I didn’t know that. Thanks.”
“I am glad to help. My name is Hyuuga Neji, Student Council Vice-President.” He presented himself. He gave a quick bow. “What is your name?”
“Haruno Sakura.” She returned the bow. Neji gave her a small smile and then took her hand into his. He delicately kissed the top and Sakura couldn’t help but let another blush surface onto her cheeks. No one had ever given her this much attention before. No matter how chokingly polite he was being.
“Well, Haruno-san, that is a lovely name for a person as lovely as you. Tell you what, I was sent out by Lady Anko to patrol the hallways and make sure that all the students are going to their designated classes, but from the look of things,” his white eyes glanced around the two quickly before settling back on Sakura. Everyone had started to make their way to their respective classes so the hallway was becoming empty slowly. “My job seems to be done without me lifting a finger. So if you would like, I could help you back to your locker.” He said as he held her schoolbooks close to his chest.
She grinned. “Yeah. I would like that. Thank you.”
“It is no problem. Let’s go then Haruno-san.”

“I will have order in my classroom NOW!” her eye twitched at Sister Shizune's commanding voice and the brunette found herself unconsciously straightening her back and refocusing her attention back onto her frighteningly calm teacher. Her other classmates quieted down and gave Sister Shizune their full attention. She nodded approvingly and smiled. “Good. Now that I have your attention,” she waved a hand demonstratively towards Sakura as she spoke, “I have just recently learned that we will be having a new student joining us. So I want you all to welcome her into the House of our Lord and Savior.”
“Yes Sister Shizune,” the class replied in unison.
“Okay, now that is settled,” she turned to Sakura and smiled gently, “you can go ahead and introduce yourself.” Sakura nodded and forced a smile onto her face.
“It is nice to meet you all. My name is Haruno Sakura. I am fifteen and I just moved here from Tokyo about a month ago. I hope that this school year will be filled with much excitement and fun times for us all.” She finished with an awkward bow.
The dark haired girl looked quizzically at the new student before she felt someone playfully pluck at her temple. She turned angry eyes to the blonde girl beside her. The blonde just smirked and ignored the glare her friend was sending her way.
“Hey Hinata, what do you think of the new kid? Think we’ll be able to have some fun with her?”
“Well, I think—“
“Of course we’re going to have fun with her. Don’t we always have fun with our playthings?” the girl named Hinata looked to her right to where her other friend, another blonde of the group, as she rolled her shoulders back to release some of the tension that was building up. She then shook her head slightly and propped her chin onto her open palm.
Hinata narrowed her eyes and then spoke calmly. “Of course we always have fun with our playthings Temari, but—“
“Ladies.” The three turned to Sister Shizune as she sent them disapproving looks. “I have asked for silence in my classroom once already. I should not have to ask again but I will. But if I have to speak to any of you again, you will have detention with me for the rest of this week, understand ladies?”
“Yes Sister Shizune,” they replied.
“Thank you ladies. Now, Haruno-san, can you please take a seat in the back next to Inuzuka-kun?” Sister Shizune said, pointing towards an empty seat next to a boy with cocoa brown hair and slightly narrowed dark eyes. He smiled and raised his hand half-heartedly from his desk.
Sakura nodded and quickly made her way to the empty seat. Once there, she shrugged her knapsack off her shoulder and dropped it onto the floor before lowering herself into the plastic seat. She gave the boy a slight nod of her head in acknowledgement and said nothing else for the rest of the period. She didn’t want to get on Sister Shizune’s bad side on her first day.

“Hello Haruno-san.”
“Oh hi Neji. I didn’t see you there and please just call me Sakura. I hate formalities,” Sakura said as she stepped out of the lunch line with her tray in hand. She wasn’t exactly hungry but she already made a promise with herself that she would try to eat more than what she had been eating lately.
“Oh but Haruno-san, it is part of Mochizuki Catholic High’s rules. We must speak to each other in respect, which means we must use formalities or at least honorifics on our names. It is the way our Lord and Savior wants us to grow up as; respectful and God-fearing human beings.” Neji said, also moving out of the lunch line.
Sakura froze but said nothing. That was one of the setbacks with attending a catholic school—a bunch of whack jobs that she really wanted no part with. It wasn’t that she didn’t believe in God, oh she did, but at the same time, she didn’t want or need people always watching her make some mistake and then tell her that she was performing a sin and that she needed to go and confess her sins so that God would love her again. Wouldn’t God love you no matter what you do?
“—you like to sit with me Haruno-san?”
“Huh?” Sakura said not as smartly as she shook herself from the temporary stupor she had placed herself in and turned to the brunet beside her.
“I was asking if you would like to sit with me Haruno-san,” Neji said.
“Oh, um sure Neji-kun,” Sakura said softly. She followed the brunet to a table where no one else was sitting at. She raised an eyebrow at the emptiness of the table. Maybe the proper Neji liked to be by himself and not surrounded by his fellow classmates. Too bad she couldn’t think that he was just like her and didn’t like to hang out with people who were just alike.
The two took their seats and Neji began—properly, mind you--eating his lunch. Sakura just looked down at her lunch before finally just pushing the tray away from her. She wasn’t hungry and she wasn’t prepare to force herself to eat right now.
“Are you not hungry Haruno-san?” she shook her head.
“No I am not Neji-kun. Would you like my lunch? I don’t like wasting food.” She said softly. Seeing him nod his head slightly, she pushed the tray over to him.
“Thank you Haruno-san.”
“No problem.” Turning away from the brunet, Sakura decided to survey the cafeteria and check out the other students of the school. She noticed that there weren’t much difference between anyone here since they all had one thing in common and shared whole-heartedly: their love for God.
My God, could it get any more boring around here? Her green eyes suddenly fell onto a group of students that seemed to center on a girl with long dark hair with her arm hooked onto the same male that she had sat next to in Sister Shizune’s class. Next to them were two other girls, both blond, whom were busy talking with each other than the other students that surrounded them. Sakura found that the group suddenly intrigued her. Maybe it was because they were different from the rest. She didn’t know. All she knew was that she wanted to get to know them. She already knew one of them; maybe he could help make it easier for her to speak to the others.
“What a line.” Sakura suddenly tore her eyes away from the group to see a girl making her way to their table. Sakura could not help but notice with a light blush on her cheeks that the girl was an extremely attractive girl. Long mud brown tresses were pulled in two puffballs and thick bangs hung slightly in front of her light hazel eyes. She walked with an air of confidence in each step. She stopped at the table and raised a chocolate brow at Sakura. “Hello. Who are you? I have never seen you before.”
“That is because she is new, Ten-Ten,” Neji said. He placed his fork down and silently beckoned the brown-haired woman over to him. Smiling softly, she moved to where he sat and watched as he reached out and grasped her wrist, pulling her towards him. Their lips connected briefly, before he pulled back. “Ten-Ten, I want you to meet Haruno Sakura. Haruno-san, this is my lovely and amazing girlfriend, Satsuki Ten-Ten.”
Ten-Ten smiled and held her hand out to Sakura. “Hello Haruno-san. It is nice to meet you.” My God, she was just as painfully polite as her boyfriend, Sakura noted.
Sakura forced a smile on her face as she shook hands with the brunette. “It’s nice to meet you too Satsuki-san.”
“So Satsuki-san, what was it about the line you were saying?” Neji asked.
“Oh, well the line was so long and for what? All we are getting if just some mashed potatoes and a piece of turkey. If you ask me, it is certainly not worth the wait.” Ten-Ten said as she took a seat beside the brunet.
“It may be only a little bit, but it does taste delicious though,” Neji replied. The two continued to carry on their conversation and seemed to have forgotten that Sakura was there. It wasn’t that Sakura was complaining; she really didn’t feel like speaking to a bunch of painfully proper fools anyway.
Yawning, she rested her head on her folded arms on the lunch table’s surface and dozed off.
x-X-x
As Sakura tied her gym shoes, she caught a glimpse of someone walking by her row if lockers. She sat up and looked to see the same girl from earlier in the cafeteria standing in front of her. Now that she was standing before her, she had enough to access her features. She noted that she had the same white-lavender eyes and pale skin as Neji. However, her hair wasn’t a milk chocolate like his; hers had more of an indigo hint to it. She wore her long hair in two braided pigtails and was dressed in a white tank and dark shorts with white trimming. She also noticed the two blonde-haired women from earlier beside her, one with long, bleach blond hair in a single pony and blackberry blue eyes and the other with dirty blonde hair, tanned skin and teal eyes.
Sakura blinked in mild confusion at the tension she was feeling in the air. She stood up from the bench and found that she was a couple of inches taller than the dark haired girl. “Um, can I help you with something?”
“You're Haruno Sakura, the new kid in 101, right?” the bleach blond asked rudely, her dark hands finding their way onto her hips.
“Um, yeah. What do you want?”
“We need to establish a few things with you.” This time the dark haired girl had spoken.
Sakura looked at her in bewilderment. What was it that they needed to establish? Hell, she didn’t even know who she was. “What do we need to establish?”
Her pale eyes quickly glanced over Sakura and a fake smile soon spread across her lips. “You are in my area, freak, and I want you to move your stuff out of it.”
Sakura twisted her pale lips into a scowl and she snorted as she turned her back on them. Never mind what she first thought about the group; she definitely did not want to get know a bunch of pricks like themselves. “No.” she said.
“If you won't move it, then I will.” To show she was serious, she grabbed a few of Sakura’s belongings and threw them to the side. She made to grab for more, but Sakura gripped her wrist, turning angry green eyes to her.
“This is my locker and don’t you dare touch any of my belongings again, understand?” Sakura all but snarled.
“Maybe you didn’t hear me clearly you freak!” she sneered. Suddenly, pale hands clutched the front of Sakura's white tee. Her back slammed into the lockers, causing the locks to jingle loudly. She put her mouth next to Sakura's ear and whispered very quietly, “I will only say this once. I do not want you anywhere near this locker area, got it?” Sakura growled and went to retort, but the dark haired girl was done yet. Her hand suddenly shot up to the ivory column of flesh and Sakura gave a startled gasp from the quick movement. “And if you ever raise your voice to me again, I will personally make sure that the rest of your high school career is HELL, do you understand me?”
Sakura felt her lips curl into a smirk. She knew what she was about to say was definitely going to get her into some deep trouble, but she did not care. What these girls were doing to her now was enough for her to gain her carless attitude about the consequences, though she never did care about them anyway.
“Fuck. You.” The dark haired girl growled before sending a hard fist into Sakura's stomach. She groaned, coughing as she tried to catch her breath.
“Don’t cross me ever again freak.” She said harshly before dropping Sakura to the floor.
x-X-x
Pushing open her apartment door, Sakura stepped inside and closed the door. Removing her school shoes and leaving them by the door, she made her way to her bedroom. The school day went by much too slowly for her taste and she had wanted nothing more than to return home to the comfort of her bedroom.
Away from the world.
Away from everything.
Closing the door behind her, Sakura threw her bag to the side and switched on her stereo to her favorite song, Numb by Linkin Park. After hearing the first part of the lyrics softly sing out the speakers, Sakura proceeded to remove her uniform. As she unbuttoned the white collared shirt and slipped it off her shoulders, she hissed in mild pain when the fabric moved against her left side. She dropped the article of clothing to the floor and instinctively grabbed at the pained area.
She grimaced at the roughness of the bruise that her hand was covering, she pulled open her drawer to retrieve antiseptic creams, and bandage wraps. She sat down on the edge of her bed and began to nurse the red and purple bruise on her left side.
Haruno Sakura was beaten periodically by her strict Catholic aunt, a harsh woman with a disturbing personality who felt that it was her right to ‘straighten her sinful niece out into the perfect God-fearing woman that she should be’. Her aunt had taken them in after their parents had died.
Once she was done with nursing her bruises, she made to put away the first-aid items and then slipped on a loose fitting t-shirt. She flopped back onto her bed and rolled onto her side, tears starting to gather at the corners of her eyes. She placed a hand to her left arm and lightly traced the multiple scars that she had inflicted on herself over the past few years since her parents’ deaths. Her eyes glanced up to her nightstand where two photos sat.
One photo was of her parents with her sitting on her father’s shoulders, a wide grin on her face. The other photo . . . that one made the tears fall down her cheeks and caused her to bury her head into her pillow to keep her loud sobs muffled.
That one photo was the photo of her parents’ funerals with Sakura standing to the side with a small infant in her arms, tears falling down her cheeks.
x-X-x
Sakura parted her eyelids weakly and was startled when she seen nothing but darkness surrounding her. How long was she sleep? Pushing herself up onto her elbow, she reached over, grabbed her alarm clock, and peered at the red digital numbers through half-focused eyes.
0700.
She sighed and forced herself into a sitting position. She rubbed sleepily at her eyes and yawned softly. Her skull felt like it had been stepped on by cleats with metal prongs and the rest of her body wasn’t doing much better. Still half-coherent, Sakura slumped out of bed and went down the stairs.
In the kitchen, Sakura slipped on the light switch. She walked over to the cabinets and clattered through, pulling pots and pans out as she went.
“Sakura, I'm hungry.”
“Dinner will be ready soon Saki, so just sit tight, okay?” the seven year old nodded and then took a seat at the kitchen table. “Did you shower before putting on your pajamas?”
“Yes, Sakura,” Saki replied. He yawned and rubbed sleepily at his eyes, “but I fell to sleep.”
Sakura chuckled. “Don’t feel so bad about it, Saki. I did also,” she admitted, fixing the plates of food. The dinner she had prepared was spaghetti with a slice of garlic bread. She placed Saki's plate in front of him and placed her plate across from him. She moved back to the sink and began to wash the morning dishes left behind by her aunt.
“Hey Sakura, can you help me with my homework?” Saki asked after swallowing his food.
“Sure Saki I’ll help you. Just give me a few minutes to finish the dishes and I’ll be right there, okay?” Saki nodded and went back to eating his dinner. Sakura smiled and went back to finishing the chores before her aunt was due back home.
x-X-x
Sakura jumped out of her sleep, harsh, ragged breaths leaving and entering her lungs at a rapid pace. Sweat had her plastered to her sheets and she could feel her heart beating ferociously against her throat. Tears instantly sprang to her eyes as she slammed the palms of her hands to her ears.
“Sakura, I want you to know that I love you--”
Lies, lies, all of that was lies. He didn’t love her. He couldn’t have. He – he took everything away from her. Everything.
“Sakura . . .”
Sakura snapped out of whatever little world she had put herself in and leaned over onto her side to switch on her nightstand lamp. She settled back onto her bed and looked worriedly to her brother. “Saki, what's wrong?” she whispered softly. Saki sniffled and shook his head wildly.
“I'm sorry Sakura!” he sobbed hoarsely. “I didn’t mean to. I don’t want Aunt Tsunade to find out!” his sobs started to grow in volume. Sakura sat up and, not wanting her baby brother to cry over something as frivolous as wetting the bed (especially since kids his age were prone to bedwetting) or awakening their aunt, pulled him onto the bed and into her arms. Saki’s cries were muffled into Sakura's collarbone as he sobbed into his sister’s skin.
“Shhh . . . Saki, don’t cry. Aunt Tsunade isn’t going to find out,” Sakura said reassuringly. She pulled his head away from her neck and cupped his wet cheeks. “Stop crying baby. I'm not mad at you,” she said softly, the pad of her thumb wiping at the tears that were falling. Saki nodded. “Now I want you to calm down and rest, okay? I’ll be right back.”
Saki nodded and crawled under the sheets. Sakura smiled her approval and then tiptoed out of the room.
x-X-x
Sakura removed the soiled sheets and quickly changed them, hiding the dirty ones in the harbor for cleaning. “Aunt Tsunade doesn’t need to know about Saki wetting the bed. I’ll make sure that she doesn’t find out.” Sakura mumbled to herself.
“Tsunade-sama! Don’t hurt Saki! Please!” Sakura screamed.
-
“T-Tsunade-sama,” he gasped. “Please listen – I – the bed – I--” But before he could get a coherent sentence out, a hand smashed into his face, sending him to the floor. Blood gushed out of his nose and his vision went red. The impact of his head against the floor made him bite his tongue painfully.
-
“Tsunade-sama! Tsunade-sama! Tsunade-sama!”
-
Tsunade’s foot abruptly slammed into his chest. He felt a few ribs groan in protest. Wiping the blood off his face, Saki sat up and groaned. “Tsunade-sama, I'm sorry, I--” he received another punch to his cheek. His neck snapped to the side, giving him whiplash.
“What is wrong with you?” Tsunade screeched so loud Saki and Sakura winced. “Why would you wet the bed after I told you not to? Do you want to end up like your horrible, sinful sister? Huh?!”
“Tsunade-sama--”
“Don’t you speak you Demon child! Do you want to end up like those damned parents of yours? Do you?!” she gripped Saki's shirt and pulled him off the ground.
“No Tsunade-sama, I – I don’t--”
“Shut the hell up! Shut up!” Sakura yelled in a loud whisper. The wounds of that day were too raw to relive right now. Noticing she was yelling at herself, Sakura took a deep breath and carded her fingers through her hair.
After a few minutes of taking deep breathes and repeatedly pushing her hair behind her ears, she went back to cleaning her brother’s bedroom.

In case anyone was wondering, Tsuzuku means to be continued in Japanese. Just thought I would throw that out there. Any who, please leave me a review and let me know what you thought about this chapter. It would be highly appreciated.
Can you guys tell me what pairing you would like? I do kind of have an idea of a pairing, but it’s not the exact main one that I want to be focusing on. For the main one, I have a few ideas, but I'm not sure. Can you guys drop me a message on who you would like as an pairing? I’ll make it easier for you guys and tell you some of the ones I'm thinking of using. Note: they all have to do with Sakura since she is obviously the main character.
Sasuke x Sakura
Sakura x Ino
Naruto x Sakura
Sakura x Karin (please don’t ask where this one came from because I don’t even know. Especially when I HATE Karin more so than when I hated Sasuke x Sakura pairing)
Sai x Sakura
Itachi x Sakura
These are the few I have thought about and sort of work a bit of the plot around them just to see if it would work. Anyway, you guys don’t have to chose any of these pairings, you can just tell me which one you want and the next time I post another chapter (that is if I have enough people telling me they want another chapter) I’ll let you guys know which pairing I will use. So don’t forget, if you guys want to see more, just leave me a nice lengthy (you don’t have to but I would like you to) review telling me what you liked about the preview. Reviews make me feel great and gives me a good boost of confidence. ^^
See you guys next time!
