Running The Gauntlet

Anko is still cursing her stupidity when she and Raven step out of the shadows. Suddenly the sound of five poofs draws everyone’s attention to the pound as the five remaining Jounin appear. Fei looks directly at Raven as he speaks. “Enough cat and mouse Raven-sama, it is time for the real test to begin.”

Raven grins as he begins to walk slowly towards the Jounin, removing his sunglasses and mask. “What’s the format this time?”

“Standard Gauntlet,” the Jounin answers. “A series of one-on-one matches with a ten minute time limit each. Knockouts, submissions and incapacitating your opponent wins.”

“Sounds right about right,” Raven says as he puts his mask and shades in one of his vest’s pockets. “Who’s my first opponent?”

“I am?” Gai answers as he steps forward. “Let the power of youth explode as you show me your true power.” With that said Gai quickly launches into an attack-forcing Raven to defend.

“Damn Hinata you’re boyfriend is hot.” Ino says causing the shy kunoichi to blush.

“R-Raven-kun is-isn’t my-my boyfriend,” Hinata shyly replies. “We-we are just-just friends.”

“Friends my ass,” Ino snorts, “You’re gonna marry him right?” She watches as Hinata blushes an even brighter shade of red nosing slowly.

“Ino,” Sakura says coming to Hinata’s defense. “Leave her alone and watch the match.”

Before Ino can reply Lee’s scream forces her to look back at the field as a cloud of dust bellows up from the ground where Gai had been standing only seconds before. “GAI-SENSEI…NO…” Lee tries to run out onto the field but is stopped by Neji who reminds him that interfering will cost their teacher the match.

As the dust begins to settle they’re startled as they see the bodiless head of Gai laughing on the ground. “Well done,” the head says. “The spring time of youth is strong in you my worthy opponent. You have earned this victory this day my young friend.”

“What happened?” Ino asks Sakura.

“If you had been paying attention instead of drooling over Raven-sama you would have seen for yourself what happened.” Sakura nearly yells.

“Raven kept doing cartwheels around Gai-sensei to avoid his attacks,” Sapphire answers. “Everytime his hands touched the ground he set a chakra charge until be had set enough to create a sandpit to trap Gai-sensei incapacitating him and winning the match.”

Gai’s still laughing as he digs himself out of the pit. Dusting himself off he looks at Asuma, “Your turn my bearded friends.” Raven’s shadow blades barely activate before Asuma’s chakra knives begin trying to cut the young man to pieces.

It takes less then a minute for Raven’s face to contort into a grimace of pain as he continues to fend of the chakra infused blades. Blood begins to flow steadily from his bladed arms as numerous shall and not so shallow cuts begin to cover his arms despite of his arm guards.

“What’s wrong with Raven-kun,” Hinata asks worriedly as tears begin to fill her eyes. “Why is he in pain and why are his arms bleeding?”

“Because he’s taking heavy damage from Asuma-sensei’s chakra knives,” Jade answers. “Shadow Blades provide little protection from normal weapons and almost none from chakra infused weapons. Even with the arm guards his arms are being sliced into everytime he tries to defend himself.”

Raven knows he won’t last much longer so in a last desperate attempt to end the match he pushes Asuma’s chakra knives out and away from his body as he charged his forehead with chakra and delivers a devastating head butt that knocks the bearded man out cold.

“ASUMA-SENSEI…” Ino, Choji and Shikamaru scream in unison as they begin to run to their teacher’s aid only to be stopped by Tsunade who assures them that the man’s alright, unconscious but alright. They watch as Gai picks up Asuma and carries the other man over to the spectators so that they are not in the way of the remaining matches.

Raven drops to his knees and sits back on the heels of his feet as he pants for breath. His arms lay bloody and heavy against his legs as he tries to block out the pain. “Who’s next?” he asks almost defiantly.

Kurenai smiles at him as she slowly walks over towards him. “We can wait a few minutes while you bandage your arms up,” she tells him. “After all it wouldn’t do for you to come this far only to faint from loss of blood.”

Raven nods in gratitude as he pulls his shredded and bloodied arm guards, dropping them on the ground beside him before removing the ointment and bandages from his first-aid kit. As he begins to tend to his own wounds Kurenai kneels in front of him. “I can see why Hinata-chan thinks so highly of you,” she tells him.

“Throughout this entire test you’ve demonstrated incredible control and restraint. But above that you’ve got a good heart. She told me about how you saved not only her life but those of Shino, Kiba and Akamaru as well and for that I’m grateful.”

“Don’t be,” he says as he ties the last of the bandages in place. “It was my fault they nearly got killed in the first place. They never should have gone against him alone, I should have aborted the mission and returned to the village.”

“If you had done that hundreds of villagers would have been left defenseless.” She reminds him.

“Which is why I’m being punished now,” he says. “I put the safety of those villagers above that of my own team and nearly got them killed.”

She gives him a warm smile before placing a soft kiss on his forehead protector. “You made the right choice Raven-sama,” she says as she stands up. “Never doubt that.” She turns and begins walking towards Tsunade’s group. “You’re turn Fei-san.”

Raven slowly begins to stand as he looks at his teacher. “As much as I would like to test my skills against you Fei-sensei,” he says pulling a smoke bomb from his pouch. “I really don’t have the strength left for another fight.” He throws the smoke bomb on the ground at his feet disappearing inside the haze.

It takes only a second for his teacher to realize what has happened but it is already too late as the man turns to look at Kakashi. “Kakashi, the scroll?” The Copy-nin reaches into the vest pocket that is supposed to contain the scroll only to find it gone.

Both men look to the Hokage in time to see Raven step out of the shadows and hand the scroll to her. “Mission Accomplished,” he says with a weary grin before passing out from exhaustion and loss of blood.

A/N: There you go people, Raven's passed the Jounin test and then just plain passed out. Guess he's not really superman after all. If you're wonder what he did you'll have to read the next chapter. I promise everything will be explained then.
