Chapter 12

CHAPTER 12

No one thought it was suspicious when Kakashi asked for two days off to visit an onsen in order to relax a little after the long and fruitless mission – he rarely went on vacations and everyone were more than happy to see the aloof Jounin actually take some personal time off. It never occurred to anyone that he simply wanted to get away from the constant surveillance in Konoha in order to contact his lover.

Hidden in the shrubbery way outside of the ANBU patrolling teams territory, Kakashi sat down, relaxed and folded his fingers in the Seal, then allowed his mind to open and reach for Pein’s, far far away.

The response, as usual, was immediate, the other’s mind blanketing his, surrounding him and comforting him with his presence.

“Pein-sama.” He said softly.

“Kakashi. I see your previous mission went well – you are unharmed. I am glad.”

Part of Kakashi had hoped to avoid talking about that with Pein, but it appeared he’d have no other choice.

“Depends on your definition of okay.” Kakashi said, his previous anger resurfacing.

“What’s wrong?”

“I met a couple of your associates. You didn’t tell me that Akatsuki was financed through drug trade.” The anger was intensifying. There silence at the other end of the connection stretched for too long for Kakashi’s already thinning patience.

“Pein!”

“I have never authorized such a thing, Kakashi.” Was the quiet answer.

“But you haven’t asked where the money comes from either, have you?” Kakashi accused.

“No. Not about all the funds. It’s Kakuzu’s job to balance our accounts. However, I had given him some specific instructions…”

“Which probably involved him staying away from Ame?” Kakashi interrupted him roughly.

The confirmation that arrived from Pein’s mind was not verbal, but quite clear.

“You can be such a hypocrite sometimes!” Kakashi said furiously.

“I have never lied to you about the means this organization uses to achieve its goals!” outrage began to pour from the other side of connection “We are not angels, Kakashi, nor a charity, and you knew this very well when you joined!” There was hurt mixing with the anger now.

Forcing himself to calm down, Kakashi answered:

“Yes, indeed, I did. I am neither naïve, nor a fool, Pein. I am ready to put up with a lot of activities, it’s not like I have not done them before, only for Konoha’s benefit – extortion, bounty-hunting, taking contracts for hits… Drugs are NOT one of those things.”

There was another long pause and then Kakashi felt a gentle wave of warmth seeping in his mind through the link.

“I will talk to Kakuzu.” Pein said softly.

“You would? Really? For me?” Kakashi was incredulous that his lover would change his policies at his request. He had done that only once before, and it had happened under very strenuous circumstances

“As I said, I have never authorized drug trade.” Pein answered. “And even if I have…I have never been able to deny you anything, have I?”

In this very moment Kakashi craved to be back in the tower of glass and steel in Amegakure, back in his lover’s arms, to express the immense gratitude he felt. Emotion choked him and he paused, letting out a soft whimper. The presence in his mind reached again and soothed him, and Kakashi basked at in the comfort that mental touch provided, even if he was starving for the real, physical one.

After a while, Pein spoke again:

“That was not the only reason why you called, was it?”

“Yes.” Kakashi murmured.

“Something to do with that troublesome Chuunin? Is he gossiping?”

“No. I… I think I figured out a way to get to the information we need.”

“Oh?”

Better not to beat around the bush.

“He wants me.”

“What?” A flash of uncertainty slid over Kakashi’s mind through the bond.

“He wants me. Especially after what he saw… back in the alley.”

Kakashi had known that it wouldn’t be good, but even he hadn’t expected the outrage and the sheer force of the possessiveness that thundered through their link.

“Out of the question!” Pein growled. “You’re mine!”

“Pein…”

“No. Absolutely not. I’d rather come down there and rip it out of his mind myself.”

“And kill him in the process, which would raise too many questions.” Kakashi said mildly, hoping to calm his lover down.

“I will not allow some stranger to touch you like this, Kakashi.” Was the firm, frosty answer.

“It was you who told me that it is the end that matters, not the means. Allow me to do what I do best, Pein… Nagato. Allow me to be a tool. Your tool.”

There it was. The outrage again.

“Appreciate the irony that the old order would be brought down by the very means through which it was supported all these years.” Kakashi said gently. “The Chuunin, he doesn’t matter. All we need is the information he has access to. I don’t care about him.”

Kakashi paused and opened his mind completely, allowing Pein in every little corner of his consciousness, allowing him to explore and possess him until there was no place left which he could call his own. His lover took the invitation readily, seeping in the Jounin’s mind and completely melding with him for a few too short moments. He touched and caressed his pleasure center, stimulating the younger man on both physical and mental level, inducing a state of complete peace and relaxation, taking every worry, every pain and fear away, immersing himself deep into his mind and sharing his ecstasy. They were seemingly surrounded by light, weightless, ephemeral spirits, alone in that perfect little world of their own creation.

It ended all too soon, leaving Kakashi feeling dizzy and sated. Pein parted with him with one last gentle caress. The Jounin leaned back against the tree and breathed deeply, feeling more relaxed than he had in ages.

Such a deep mindmeld was something his lover practiced on extremely rare occasions, because it left him weak and disoriented, but they were always joyous moments for Kakashi. No physical joining could possibly compare to the intimacy they experienced when they connected in such a primal, incorporeal way. The physical orgasm that had coursed through his body was but a pale shadow of the sheer Nirvana he had felt on a purely mental level.

How could Pein feel jealous of the Chuunin when the young man could never possibly offer Kakashi the same sort of intimacy? Or were just his insecurities talking?

Kakashi knew that despite all his power, all his claims of divinity – and the Jounin was still quite certain that those were nothing but a clever show used in order to instill obedience in his subjects – Nagato was a very human creature, one who carried as much baggage as Kakashi did, if not more, and one of them, just like Kakashi’s, was the sheer mind-numbing fear of abandonment.
