Don't Ask, Don't Tell

Chapter 12

Naruto bustled around the kitchen, he was preparing a meal. He stopped a random guy passing by, “You there, are you busy?”

The man he was talking to looked startled and pointed to himself, “M-me?”

Naruto let out a huff of breath, “No, not you, the ghost behind you. Yes, you!”

The man blinked at him, puzzled, “Um, um I was about to-”

“Is it anything of extreme importance?” Naruto cut him off.

“No, but-”

“Then go to the store and buy me some zucchini, mozzarella, tomatoes, and parmesan.”

“What?”

Naruto sighed, “Would *you* like to explain to Kyuubi why you’re not listening to me or why he or his men aren’t going to get dinner tonight? Was I not clear enough? Go. To. The. Store. And. Buy. Me. The. Food. I. Requested.”

When the man stared at him blankly Naruto scowled at him and said, “Never mind, I’ll go. You and I will need to have a spar sometime before I go. What’s your last name?”

“Scott.”

“Alright, Scott. I’ll find you later.”

***

Naruto exited the store an hour later, disguise still in place, with his purchases. He went back to Kyuubi’s and started getting things ready.

He made thin, even slices of the zucchini and set them all aside before doing the same to the tomatoes and mozzarella. While he was doing this he baked the bread he had made earlier and set up a couple of skillets on the oven- adding a bit of olive oil to each skillet.

He heated up the oil on each skillet and added the zucchini in a singular layer and fried them until they were brown on both sides until the zucchini was finished. With that done he grabbed a several 9x12 glass baking dishes. Naruto placed the zucchini, mozzarella, and tomatoes in rows in the baking dishes until each dish was full, having them overlap a bit. He sprinkled parmesan, basil, salt, and pepper over the dishes and slipped the bread out of the oven before putting the six glass dishes in. He baked them for 30 minutes until the cheese was browning. While he waited for the food to finish he made a huge salad and a lemon vinaigrette dressing.

Naruto was finishing up and pulling the dishes from the oven when the 16 other men that lived in the house started wandering in, he set everything from the Zucchini and Tomato Gratin, to the salad and French bread on the table before serving out some for Kyuubi and himself.

“Enjoy,” he said before heading to Kyuubi’s study.

He knocked on the door in warning before letting himself in and setting a plate in front of Kyuubi.

Kyuubi rose and eyebrow when he saw the vegetable dish along with a hunk of bread and some salad on his plate, “What’s this?”

Naruto grinned at him, “Zucchini and Tomato Gratin along with some French Bread and Salad.”

“Why are there so many vegetables?”

Naruto grin morphed into a smirk, “The thought of all your manly men eating a purely vegetarian meal amused me. Besides you guys probably don’t get enough vegetables. I don’t know how half the people around me survive without my cooking.”

Kyuubi’s other brow rose to join the first, “I can cook.”

Naruto patted his arm, “I’m sure you can but there’s a difference between cooking and cooking *well*.”

“Does that matter as long as you eat?”

“Yeah. That’s like saying I want you to assassinate this guy quietly and then having the guy that kills him do it and leave his weapon or a witness behind. Does it matter as long as he’s dead?”

Kyuubi nodded, accepting Naruto’s point.

“Oh, and by the way,” Naruto continued, brow furrowing, “Some of your guys are idiots. *Why* are you hiring these people?”

“Canon fodder.”

The pair fell silent as they started to eat. Naruto stacked the plates when they were done and was about to leave when Kyuubi’s question stopped him.

“Do you regret it? Do you wish I’d never taken you in when you were five?”

Naruto sighed and sat back down, “What brought about that question?”

Kyuubi chuckled, “I’m not sure if you answering a question with a question is a good thing. I brought it up because you’re still thinking about how I said fighting is in your blood.”

Naruto flinched.

“Do I regret it?” he mused, “Sometimes I do but I don’t think I’d change it. After all, I love the people that I have in my life and how many people really have it as good as I do?”

Naruto looked down and fell silent before quietly asking, “Why didn’t you take me in when I was four and my parents were murdered? You were there.”

“To be honest, when I first saw you I was only fifteen, I didn’t know anything about taking care of a kid- especially not one who had not only witnessed both his parents die but was covered in their blood. How was I supposed to help you? You were traumatized. I thought you would have been better off if someone else found and took care of you.”

“Then why’d you take me in when I was five?”

“Because a year is a long time, I matured in that time and when I found you again you were on the streets. By that time you had seen most of the worst the world has to offer. I thought that you would have been in a cushy foster home with parents that coddled you. How could I *not* take you after that? I don’t believe in coincidence, not twice with the same person.”

Naruto let out a watery chuckle, “I remember the first time I met you. I was trying to wake my parents up and you said, ‘kid, your parents are dead. Why are you still here? Get going.’”

Kyuubi nodded, “Wasn’t the most subtle of people back then. We had someone that needed taking care of and I remembered thinking that the building wasn’t going to be safe soon, especially for some tiny runt. But I took you in for a year when I was sixteen before bringing you to Tsunade and Jiraiya and striking a deal with them.”

“Really? What was the deal? I initially thought you didn’t want me but you took me back during the summers so I figured that you must have kind of wanted me at least sometimes.”

“You’re my perfect little heir, of course I want you. And even if you weren’t I’d still want you. You’re the closest thing to a child that I’ll ever get. I told Jiraiya that I’d get to the top off the underworld and make things a little easier for them at the police department and that as a sign of my sincerity, and for them not to lock me up, I’d give them something precious to me. I wanted you to grow up relatively normal and get an education, experience the love of other people. And I… I couldn’t keep you, not by myself at 16 in my profession. You needed to be protected so other people wouldn’t use you to get to me, that’s not a problem now though.”

“Why haven’t you ever told me this stuff before?” Naruto asked.

Kyuubi shrugged and didn’t quite meet his eyes, “You never asked… and before you weren’t quite old enough to know.”

Naruto started to protest and Kyuubi shook his head, “It’s never really been you being mature enough to hear it per say, you grew up very young. I just mean that before you weren’t really secure enough in yourself to hear what I had to say, Naruto.”

“You know I’m here because of Sasuke, why haven’t you ever done anything about him? As a matter of fact you’re the only one that has never given me an opinion about him or discouraged me from seeing him, why?”

“Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t like that little, spoiled fucker and I never have. But that wasn’t ever my choice, was it? As grown up as you are about a majority of things you still don’t have much experience in others. This was something you had to learn by yourself. And even if I had eliminated him, you would have known who did it- so would Tsunade and Jaraiya for that matter- so it wouldn’t have done me any favors.”

The corner of Naruto’s mouth quirked up, “My ever so practical Kyuubi.”

Kyuubi made a haughty expression, “Of course.”

A/N: Well I hope that answered most of the questions for those that asked. I wrote this chapter specifically for that purpose, I was planning something a bit different. For the questions that *haven't* been answered... well either they haven't been asked or they'll be answered at a certain point in future chapters. I think next chapter may be a bit of a surprise. I loved all the reviews I got so I'll answer them now, thank you to those of you who reviewed- and those of you reading. Three day update, I'm getting it back.

Anon- I'll refer to you as Anon #1 since there are two of you, I'm assuming you're different people, and it'd be nice to know if I'm correct. Thank you for the compliment. Their relationship is unique, and it's made even more different by their backgrounds. You'll see more examples of this in the future.

Anon #2- And now you've learned even more about Naruto's past, not everything but quite a bit. I wrote this chapter because I couldn't think of a better way that related so much info about it without interspersing it too much. I hope I scratched that itch for you.

AngelTalion- You're welcome though I'm not quite sure for what. Naruto needed some edges, he couldn't have had his past without them- even in the manga/anime I think he has them. You'll see, I didn't answer your question because it's something I plan to go into in the future.

spriggan_d- Smart of you to figure out that Sasuke doesn't know. I wonder what *that* did to their relationship? You asked and I've answered. Hope you liked this chapter.

qwerty- Wish granted. Thank you, I do plan to. This story just keeps getting bigger.

NarutoVixin- Choppy how? If there's any suggestions on how to improve me work or make it a good read for everyone I'd love to know. Thank you. I've answered most of the questions on his past and Haku will come back into play a little later. Thank you, I don't plan to leave this story unfinished.
PS- I've done some editing so the chapter should be better now.
