Chapter18
/* AN: Like I've said, I have no intention of dropping this story. I have a long arch unfolding itself the more and more I think about it. I can see everything in my mind to the point I have to draw it. If you leave your email with a review I'll be sure to add you to my update list.
Now, onto business. Thanks for the 25,000 hits. I'm curious as to why I haven't broken the 200 review mark yet though, that's not even 1% of the hits getting reviews. Now, I understand that some of the hits are going to be people checking for updates, but it's still disappointing that even begging for reviews I'm still getting so few. So I guess this is me continuing to beg, before I'd threatened not to update, with other stories, but that was a bust. I still didn't get any reviews.
Just... Please, if you like the story, let me know. If you DON'T like the story, let me know. I'd love to be critiqued so that I can become a better writer.
This story is going to remain in the past for a few chapters. I'm trying to show what influences Sasuke's decision to take care of Naruto. */

A loud banging woke Sasuke from the deep slumber he had fallen into. Next he was being jostled by two pairs of hands. He could hear a third person walking to check the windows. Groaning, he opened his eyes to sea green eyes and pink hair.
Sakura had grown into a beautiful woman, he suddenly noticed. She'd grown a good six inches, she'd be close to his own height now. Her hair was kept the same shoulder length she was forced to cut it during their first Chuunin exam. Her face had matured, loosing what little baby fat she had had when he'd left. She was slender and sinew everywhere. Her breasts, which had been small for her age when she was younger, had blossomed, she was beginning to take after her Sannin teacher in more ways then just her fighting techniques.
“Good morning Sasuke.” She still had that adorable, 'I could never hurt a fly' smile. He knew it was a lie. She was stronger then him now. “You were late for our meeting so we came for you. You were even later then Kakashi!”
“I apologize, I wasn't aware I was to begin my retraining so soon.”
“Of course you are, Teme. You're to be 'broken down and reconstructed as a useful Konoha ninja. You're worthless as you are now.” The blond had moved off as soon as Sasuke had opened his eyes.
He, unfortunately, was defiantly taller then Sasuke. He was broader too. His baggy jumpsuit did nothing to hide the sheer animalistic power contained within his body. His hair was a little longer, wilder looking. His eyes, while still blue, were distinctively more slitted then a normal human being's should be. Sasuke was sure there'd be fangs in that mouth if he took the chance to look. He didn't.
Sasuke looked disgustedly at the ceiling. He was the weakest person on the team, and a team was only as good as it's weakest member.
“Give me two minutes, I'll be dressed and out to train then.” Sasuke rolled to sit up from where he'd been embarrassingly cuddled up to the pillow he'd bawled his eyes out into last night.
The three left the room, Sasuke following and going to his old room. He'd left everything behind when he left. He'd presented his defeat to the elders in borrowed robes from the Hospital. He needed new clothes, he couldn't wear these. When he opened his dresser he discovered everything too small. No small wonder, he thought, when considering how much everyone else had grown.
Now he stood in front of that dresser, pondering what to do about clothes. “Itachi.” He slumped his shoulders and smacked his forehead against the dresser top. Further defeat. The only clothes in this building that would fit him were his brother's clothes. His father had been far wider then he was, He took more after his mother, the same way Itachi had seemed to.
When he turned again to the hall, Kakashi stood in his way. “I thought you might need something to wear, so I stopped to the store last night for you.” He tossed a paper wrapped packet next to the rolled up futon on the floor of his old bedroom. As he turned, he looked over his shoulder at Sasuke, “Welcome back. We're in the back garden.”
Sasuke just nodded. Maybe he'd have an ally after all.
*****************************************
The brunet moved out onto the back patio, his three team mates bent and on their knees over different sections of the over grown garden. He saw a brush in a tanned hand flick out, brushing scum off of a smooth stone in a pond.
“What are you doing?!” Sasuke rushed towards Naruto, firm on making him stop mucking about in his family's garden. He was set until he noticed Sakura was pulling weeds. Kakashi was pretending to do the same thing but he was really hunched over reading his glorious orange book. Sakura and Naruto turned and looked at him after his rather uncharacteristic outburst.
The pink haired girl cocked her head to the side a bit, “Well, I'm pulling weeds and making sure your pretty flowers have room the breath. Naruto's cleaning out the ponds and Kakashi is... well, he's being Kakashi.” That innocent smile again.
“Why?”
Naruto stood and flung water from his hands, two strides towards Sasuke and the brunet felt like he was a mouse being cornered by a cat. “We are bumped down to Gennin missions until you're upgraded. A team is only as strong as it's weakest ninja. That's you Sasuke. Now grab a brush and help me out, this is disgusting and if you hadn't left I wouldn't need to be doing it.”
*****************************************
While his new clothes had fit well, it was the exact opposite with his old team. He had been awkward around Sakura. Kakashi had regarded him as any Jounin would look at a Gennin, a nuisance. Naruto had preferred to pretend he wasn't even there.
Sasuke sighed as he moved into the bathroom and began the filling the tub as well as his bucket. He piled his clothes in a corner and sat on his stool. What was he going to do? This was a kind of torture he wasn't used to. He'd endured endless mental torture from both Itachi and Orochimaru, he subjected himself to physical torture in training, believing it could help him to become stronger. This was different, it was more... emotional.
He dumped the bucket over his head to wet his hair and began filling it again. If it was emotional that meant he wanted to fit in, he wanted to be accepted again. Before, he'd been the star everyone shot for, now he was the muck the wiped off their shoes and it bothered him. Especially when Naruto did it.
He began washing his body as he thought about the blond. He'd been endlessly cruel to Naruto when they were young, Naruto was returning the favor now. Now the other boy was the hero and Sasuke was nothing, he was living it up and taking advantage of Sasuke.
If Sasuke couldn't defeat Itachi, at least he could become strong enough to wipe that smirk from Naruto's face. Lathering his hair he imagined defeating the blond the way he used to when they first became ninjas. How he'd always had to watch out for the blond, make sure he wasn't getting into trouble.
When he'd left for Orochimaru, he'd admitted that Naruto was his best friend. During his time with the snake Sannin, that hadn't changed. He had looked back on his times with Naruto and smiled. Naruto was still his most important person. He still wanted to show him how good he was, how strong he was.
Lathering his hair, enjoying the massage, he smirked. He'd show everyone who was dead last.
*****************************************
Flashes of memories, Sasuke looking over his shoulder or turning away or walking towards Naruto, always a look of snobbishness on his face. His own voice echoed through his head, repeating his words back to him, “Dobe. Usuratonkachi. Baka.” Then it changed, it was Naruto's voice saying the same things, just that look in his eyes when he looked down on the brunet kneeling in Orochimaru's blood.
Sasuke sat up with a start. Moonlight filtered in through the open curtains, it was only a little passed midnight and at the base of the window sat several packages. Always the cautious ninja, Sasuke grabbed the kunai from under his pillow and padded over carefully.
Everything seemed in place, he even recognized the packaging form somewhere. It was the same packaging that the clothes Kakashi had given him had come in. He quickly untied one and noticed it was the same as what he used to wear, dark clothes, Uchiha emblem in proud, plain view. Only there were a lot more then before.
Kakashi must not have wanted the team to know he was showing any special quarter to him and dropped this stuff off just now. He'd have to remember to thank him in the morning. Sighing at the innocence of the packages, he moved back to his bed and crawled under the covers again.
