23 Years after the Demon Fox's Attack

“Don’t you ever let me see your ugly face again! Your mother should have committed seppuku before you were born.”

Keiko (Firefly) looked up the gang of bullies that knocked her down to the ground.

The little girl only wanted to buy a doll from the toymaker with some of the money that her mom gave to her for her birthday gift, but now she was lying in the gutter with a bruised face and a bloody lip. Her new doll was torn into pieces that were floating down the water in the gutter.

Everyone else walked on as the childrens all gave her another kick in the side or head before leaving her to cry in the gutter. One of the older boys even opened the fly of his pants and peed on her face.

Keiko wondered what was so wrong with her that all the kids seemed to gang up on her and beat her up. The girls among the group yelled insults at her and some hit her in the face with closed fists and shoes at least until Keiko was turned into a human toilet.

Today was her sixth birthday.

Keiko's mother worked so hard at the medical clinic as a medic-nin's aide and working the evening shift at Ichiraku’s Ramen Bar when Keiko was asleep to get the money for Keiko’s doll. Now the doll was smashed. Keiko knew that her mother would work extra shifts to get her a doll to replace the one that was broken, but Keiko did not want her mom to work so had that Keiko did not see her before Keiko went to bed.

Keiko tried to be nice to the other kids like her mother taught her to be. She tried to avoid the gangs of the children who lived soley for the opportunity to hurt her, but her short little legs were not able to outrun the taller boys. Once they spotted her, Keiko knew what would happen to her. She ran, but she ran knowing that she would lose the race and be beat up again.

Keiko closed her blue eyes. With the exception of her mother, Kakashi-sensei, a few of her mother’s old friends, the Third and Fifth Hokages, and the folks who ran the ramen bar, it seemed that everyone else in the village hated her. If she cried they would either ignore her or hit her for merely being...Keiko, and for merely breathing the same air and living in the same village as they did.

Her mother was expecting her to return straight home and wait for mom to bring the sweets for Keiko’s sixth birthday celebration, but something was wrong with her leg. It was twisted and it hurt far too much for her to try to move it. The child wondered if the adults would just leave her in the gutter to drown when the big storms came and the gutters flooded.

The grown ups were all walking by as if she was invisible as was their habit.

Keiko was always invisible to adults unless they were in a really bad mood and wanted to blame something on Keiko.

Last week, Kurita-san accused her of breaking several of his ceramic pots and vase.

Even though Keiko was attending her pre-academy orientation with her mother when the pots were supposedly smashed, the jonin serving a judge that day decreed that her mother had to work extra hours to pay Kurita-san for the ceramic pots. At six, Keiko already learned that the world was not far if you were the village scapegoat. Adults and children routinely lied to get her in trouble and the other children only beat her up.

The sun was rising and it was becoming unbearably hot. Keiko's fair skin was hurting and turning red from the sun.

Keiko’s mother would not get off work at the clinic until it was late afternoon. No other availible adult cared enough to watch Keiko and certainly would not miss her. Keiko had no choice but to wait and pray that no wagon ran her over until her mother could find her. She closed her eyes waiting and dozed off.

Suddenly a pair of arms gently picked her up from the gutter.

Keiko was afraid to open her eyes knowing that with her luck, it was another group of kids or an adult who wanted to beat her up some more and throw her body in the town dump again.

“Beasts, they have to beat up a little girl so they can feel better about their insignificance.”

The voice was starchy as if it did not know whether to be deep like an man’s or high like a boy’s. Keiko slowly opened her swollen eyes to look at the one who would either be her new tormentor, or maybe, just maybe someone who would just tolerate her. Keiko had experienced far too much pain and abuse to consider that he might be a friend.

The boy was far bigger than the boys who hurt her. He was almost as tall as the man who ran the noodle stand. His eyes were brown and he was strong enough to cradle her as he carried her to the clinic.

The young boy delivered her to medic on duty in the clinic.

“She has a broken leg and possibly other internal injuries.”

The medic looked down at the little girl’s face, “Oh her, she can wait. No one is going to treat her anyways until her mother gets off work and comes here with the coin for her care.”

“Wait...unless you have someone dying in the operating room, she can’t wait. I will pay for her care if money is the only objection.”

The medic stared at the boy, “This...thing is Keiko, the spawn of that Naruto-scum. Letting it die will only make this village a better place. Now go or I will...”

However the young man did not back down, “You know who I am. More importantly, you know whose grandson I am and how he feels about protecting everyone, including this child, that lives in the village. If you don’t want to spend the rest of your life living in the swamps donating your blood to the mosquitoes with the worst team of genin that can be found, then you will set this girl’s leg and ensure that she has no internal injuries. You are a healer. You have taken an oath to render treatment to all who enter these doors, fairly and impartially, whether or not they have the coins. Now follow your oath or slice your belly!”

The medic’s face turned white.

The setting of the leg hurt worse than the break. The pain was too much and the medic did something that made Keiko fall asleep. Keiko remembered waking up in the clinic with her mother in tears staring at her.

“Mom, I'm sorry...My doll is broken...Don’t buy another doll...Stay home, please, for me. I rather have you home then some stupid doll...”

"Don't worry, Keiko-kun, mommy's here."

"Mama, why do they hate me so much? Why do they have to hurt me all the time?"

However, Keiko’s mother had no answer but for the tears in her eye. Keiko’s sobbing mother just picked up Keiko up and carried her home in her arms. Keiko wondered who the boy who rescued her was, but the medic never showed back to the clinic nor did anyone else get the strange boy’s name.
