Branches and dieing leaves whipped past the redhead’s face as he leapt gracefully from branch to branch, agile as a cat. Gaara craned his head back slightly to see if Lee was keeping up with his steady pace and was pleased to see that he was right on his heels.

They had set out that morning at the break of dawn to begin the two day trip to his village. He had spent the night at the Hokage’s quarters in a plain bedroom after Tsunade had convinced the two ambitious teens that night travel was dangerous and to put to bluntly, stupid.

Gaara had met Lee at the gates of Konoha before setting out, the night before hand Lee had stopped Gaara outside the Hokage’s office to say that he didn’t need his help to pack. The comment caught Gaara off guard at how Lee had sounded when he told him not to follow.

The green nin’s eyes were currently locked forward and had obviously not noticed Gaara’s sly spying on him from the corner of a teal eye.

‘Almost like he was…’ Gaara focused back on what he was doing when a branch had come a bit close for comfort from his absentmindedness.

‘Gaara-kun I don’t need your help please stay here.’ Lee’s voice from the night prior echoed in his head making a few unwelcome flashbacks to his ugly childhood. The look in Lee’s eye’s matched the ones of the children who had tried to run from him…

‘Fear.’ Gaara’s face fell to a slight frown. Why would he be afraid of him? He had saved him from that bone nin a few years prior hadn’t he? So why did he look at him like that? For some annoying reason the thought of Lee being afraid of him was burning through his mind making it so that he couldn’t concentrate properly.

The sun was setting and Gaara was sure Lee was tired even though when told to stop for that day Lee had countered that he had much more ‘youthful’ energy left in him.

“Night is not the best time to travel.” Gaara landed on the mossy forest floor with a dull *thump* and ignored the other boys protests.

“Gaara-san we can keep going I-“

“No.” Gaara turned from the teen and detached his gourd from his back setting down as he leaned back on a tree.

Lee gave a slight pout but after seeing the unwavering look on the Kazekage’s face he decided not to argue. Instead he announced his challenge on collecting fire wood in less then 20 seconds else he do 1000 push ups, making Gaara internally grimace at seeing Lee push his body.

Luckily for them both Lee accomplished this ridicules feet with time to spare.

“YOSH!!!! YOUTH SHALL EXPLODE!!!!” Lee did a few dramatic victory kicks before plopping down to make a fire.

“Why do you say that?” Gaara stayed in his leaning position eyeing Lee with indifference.

“Say what? Oh the youthful thing?” Lee let out a squeal of pleasure as the fire started to crackle and pop with ‘youthful’ procession.

“Yes.” Gaara continued his soul searing look in the back of Lee’s head genuinely curious to ask why the need for such an odd phrase.

“Because Gai sensei says it’s good to have a cheer for one’s self to give them hope and restore their focused.” Lee chirped happily sitting back on his haunches as he looked back at Gaara with a soot smeared face, grinning.

“Hn.” Gaara turned from Lee and started into the dense forest.

“Gaara-san?! What are you doing?” Lee jumped up in worry and started to follow but Gaara stopped him by his cold firm voice.

“I’m securing the perimeter.” With that Gaara vanished.

“H..hai.” Lee looked a bit unsure of what to do next so after a bit of contemplating he set about gathering herbs and spices for their dinner.

***

Gaara breathed heavily clutching his heart while the other held shakily onto the tree for support.

‘Because Gai sensei….’

Gaara clenched his teeth angrily as feelings of rage pulsated through his veins making his blood seem like liquid fire, leaving him trembling.

“Why…?” Gaara asked out loud looking down on Lee as he happily scooped up the necessities for a healthy meal.

He had to leave quickly after Lee had said that….. had looked like that….So…..

‘Happy…’ Gaara winced as his mask fell away as a play of animated emotions painted his face.

‘He never looked at me like that when I saved him….’ Gaara dug his fingernails into the tree not even noticing at chunks of bark fell away to the forest floor below.

The thought of returning to Konoha and killing Lee’s precious teacher crossed his mind making him smile a bit statistically but quickly got a hold of himself.

‘Why do I care?’ Gaara let his face melt back to a calm expression. His gaze followed Lee about the small clearing absently. He made his hand fall to his side and leaned back to the trunk taking a few breaths of cool forest air to calm completely down before setting back down to where Lee was.

***

Lee had gathered all the food needed and had set a small pot brewing over the blazing fire as he hummed happily, legs crossed and looking up at the brilliant sky filled with speckles of stars.

A small noise behind him made him turn slightly in his sitting position to see Gaara walking steadily toward him.

“Oy Gaara-san dinners almo-“

“Why are you afraid?” Gaara’s icy voice cut Lee off.

“Huh?” Lee blinked a few times looking confusedly up at Gaara not understanding what he had meant.

“I saved you. Why are you still afraid of me?” Gaara continued to walk closer and closer to Lee almost in a stalking like way.

“Gaara-san I’m no-“

“Don’t lie.” Gaara now was standing over Lee the other boy felt a few tingles of fear creep into his belly filling him with dread.

“Gaara-san I don’t understand why all the sudden-?”

Gaara knelt down to Lee’s eye level and took Lee’s left arm in his hand before the other teen could pull away.

“It’s because of this.” Gaara brought his other hand to Lee’s forearm carefully and so chaste that Lee could barley feel his nimble fingers on his skin.

Lee didn’t understand what was going on he hadn’t intended Gaara to feel like he was afraid of him….it was just that after the trauma of his past he couldn’t help it.

“I….Gaara….I didn’t mean…” Lee struggled for words as the redhead looked up at him with such intensity it made him want to flinch. But as Lee’s eyes locked with the redhead’s he saw something else other then the cool indifference Gaara tried so relentlessly to keep in check…..loneliness?

Gaara stood up suddenly and started the opposite direction and Lee feared he was going to leave but instead he grabbed his gourd and placed it upright before sitting down and leaning beside it with his arms crossed.

He remembered hearing from Naruto that Gaara’s childhood had been anything but pleasant and how cruel people had treated him….the same way he himself was treating the redhead now…

Lee quickly stood up and made his way to Gaara with out further hesitation he kneeled down in front of the Kazekage boldly and made firm eye contact.

“I’m sorry. I’m just still a bit…” Lee looked away then looked back to Gaara’s sea green orbs with confidence. “I want us to be friends.” Lee smiled a genuine smile at the Kazekage to make his point.

To say Gaara was taken aback would be an understatement….but after seeing Lee’s genuinely ambitions in the subject he felt a small bond of trust had been forged between him and the green nin.

Lee extended a hand and after a long pause Gaara took it hesitantly as Lee shook it firmly.

Standing back up Lee made his way back to the soup missing a small smile that crept across Gaara’s face but as soon as it appeared it was gone but the feeling of closure within them both stayed.

“Dinners ready!”
