Awakenings

Thank you Sneakyfox, Garmiet, and spoon for reviewing, you made me feel so fuzzy ^_^

Sneakyfox:
You were my first ever reviewer (!) and you really made me happy when I was worrying whether people would like it or not. It hadn’t actually occurred to me about the markings, but now you’ve mentioned it I have some ideas. Cheers!

Garmiet:
Thank you for the praise, and you don’t need to worry too much about the angst ;) I’m a happily-ever-after kind of girl. I had to guess what warnings to attach to this fic because I don’t know what’s going to happen, so some of them might not even be necessary. And thanks for saying it’s nicely edited, I’ve poured over what I have typed-up so many times I should be able to recite it ^_^;

Spoon:
Sorry I confused you, but dreams are not often clear. To tell you the truth this came from a dream I had, except that the creature was the pokemon from the cover of the Ruby version and it lunged in my face shouting ‘MONSTER YOU’RE A MONSTER LEAVE LEAVE!’ That woke me up!

Chapter1 - Awakenings

The first rays of sun were beginning to tinge the sky pink, lifting the darkness as it slowly rose. The moonless night faded, and it became possible to see the outlines of thin saplings scattered around a large clearing, the shadowy tree line at its edge, and the twitching, sleeping eyes of a young boy among the foliage.
Naruto blinked his eyes open and leisurely glanced around. His bright blue eyes grew larger and larger at realising he wasn’t in his bed; he wasn’t even in the village.
“What the…!” He exclaimed jumping to his feet. Turning around in circles he looked for something, anything that was familiar.
How did I get here?! He thought. Yesterday he had spent the entire day training (minus the time for eating), and had decided to go home earlier than normal, the sun was just setting as he had dragged himself to bed. He’d gone to sleep, and that was it. Now he was who-knows-where, with no idea how he’d gotten there!
Worry was coursing through him; he needed to find out where he was. To still the anxiety he began to take deep breaths, he needed to calm down and remember what he had been taught. First he needed to check for danger. Standing still he stretched his senses, but there was no one there, in fact the only living thing he could sense was a murder of crows flying past high above.
What’s going on? He thought. There wasn’t even a squirrel hiding among the tree leaves. A forest like this should be crawling with life.
Anxiousness rising again, he decided it was time to figure out where he was. The tall trees at the edge of the clearing would give him a good view of the area, however they were a distance away, and the bewildered boy noticed for the first time that he was surrounded by twig thin saplings that were littered across the clearing. Naruto hurried over to one of the larger trees and quickly began scaling it. Looking around him again, he checked for danger - just because he felt there was no one around didn’t mean there actually wasn’t. Focusing chakra to his feet he quickly reached the roof of the forest. What he saw there both confused him and relieved him; in the distance the Hokage Tower stood proudly.
Throwing caution to the wind in his delight he leapt to the lower branches and began bounding toward Konoha.

Strolling through the great opening, Naruto glanced from side to side. Immediately he noticed that there were no sentries stationed there.
This just gets weirder and weirder, he thought.
There didn’t seem to be a soul in Konoha, but he just reminded himself that the sun was barely up, and hurried home with a foreboding feeling. Reaching the apartment block he quickly climbed the rusty stairs leading to his apartment, and froze when he saw the door was wide open.
The interior of the apartment was in darkness preventing him from seeing inside as he slowly approached. His senses were totally alert, but there seemed to be no one inside. Passing through the dark threshold Naruto quickly and quietly moved into the main room. What he saw shocked him to stillness. The entire room had been ransacked; furniture was overturned, every draw and cubby had been emptied, and most things were broken or torn to pieces. He just stood there and ran his huge shocked eyes over the rubble that was left of his home.
The shell-shocked blonde started and ran over to the bedside dresser, he noticed the mattress wasn’t on the bed –it was probably half way across the room he thought- and the bed frame was broken into splinters, but he didn’t care about that now. He stood in front of where the draws use to be and begun rummaging through the bits of wood and his possessions. He was looking for one thing, one very special thing. He spied the corner of a wooded picture frame and it felt like the world had stopped. To Naruto it seemed as if he was watching someone else’s hand cautiously extend toward the piece of wood. Tentatively the fingers wrapped around the item, and with as much tenderness as a trembling hand could muster he pulled the picture out from under the debris of his dresser. With every ounce of his being he hoped that it was intact. If everything else he owned, he prayed, was torn to shreds, let this one thing be spared. Centimetre by centimetre the frame came out intact. There wasn’t a crack upon the glass, not a splinter missing from the frame, and the photo inside looked as it always had.
Relief washed through Naruto, and he sank to the floor cradling the picture frame in his hands. Minutes passed without notice as the blonde stared at the image in his lap with lonely eyes. It was usually this way when he looked at it; either it filled him with a sense of purpose, or it stripped away every layer of defence he had. He trailed his eyes across each face; from himself to Kakashi-sensei, and to Sakura-chan, and finally resting on Sasuke. His eyes fallowed every part of the Teme’s pouting face, as he’d done many times before, and thought; why?
The silence was sliced through by a shout, and Naruto jumped to his feet spinning around to see one of the villagers standing in the doorway. The young boy’s hand was waving towards him. The villager shouted again, and this time Naruto heard what he said.
“I’ve found it! It’s here!” Bellowed the boy looking back over his shoulder.
Naruto stood there staring at the stranger in shock. What did he mean?
“What’s going on?” Naruto asked taking a few steps forward. The boys head whipped around with a audible crack, and a horrified look upon his face, then ran from the doorway back outside.
There was a shocked silence in the room, Naruto stood there with his hand half outstretched towards the scared boy that was no longer there. Confusion was written all over his face. This kind of talk wasn’t unknown to him, but he’d never had that reaction before: he hadn’t even done anything!
There was a rising noise coming from outside the apartment, and it sounded like a very angry mob. Right now the doorway looked more inviting than it had right to, and Naruto knew what was gathering out there, and it terrified him. Almost against his own will he began to move slowly forward. As he shuffled his feet across the floor, he was reminded of the odd dream he’d had that night, he couldn’t remember much else of it though. The doorframe was cold and unpleasant against his palm as he squeezed it, trying to quell the rising panic which was surging inside of him at the sight before his eyes. It was almost possible to believe that every villager in Konoha was stood below him. In the morning mist they looked a ghostly rabble milling around the streets surrounding the apartments.
The panic inside of him was threatened to overflow, but all he could do was stand in the doorway dumbfounded. The shouts from the mob below were getting louder and fiercer, and the stricken blonde could pick out words like ‘monster’ and ‘demon’, but he didn’t know what he could have done to insight their wrath.
Out of the corner of his eye, Naruto saw a shuriken racing towards him; he fell forward to dodge it, but knocked his head on the banister. The immediate danger brought him out of his reverie, and he narrowly avoided another shuriken by rolling back into his doorway. He crouched on all fours fully alert to another attack. Outside more Hidden Leaf ninja were gathering as word of Naruto being found spread. Their target however could barely think straight, it felt like his head was stuffed with cotton-wool. In his mind he kept thinking: what have I done? What have I done? While confusion stuffed his mind, the Anbu agents sneaking up from behind went unnoticed, but the two feet appearing in front of him caught his attention.
It seemed to Kakashi, that Naruto’s eyes couldn’t possibly get any larger as they stared up at him. Ignorant confusion was radiating out of the boy as betrayal swam in his eyes. Kakashi couldn’t stand it. Looking down at his student crouched on the floor expecting another attack from the people he trusted, it all felt wrong.
The order for Naruto’s immediate capture - or should he contest: elimination – hadn’t come from the Hokage’s mouth. The Council had issued the order, and though Kakashi should take that as a united decision by the Council and Hokage, he knew that Tsunade had fought it with all her might. Nevertheless, against the will of the Council it hadn’t been enough.
Right now Kakashi’s head and heart were locked in a battle, and his loyalty didn’t know which way to turn. He decided this wasn’t a choice he was prepared to make, so he would let the Hokage do it herself.
Grabbing a prone Naruto the Jounin threw him over his shoulder. The Anbu members hiding in the shadows stared at the grey haired ninja in disbelief as he sped off towards the Hokage in a poof of smoke.

Don't always go for the sure thing, sometimes you need to take a leap of faith.
