Chapter 2

Why must the sky decide to mock him so maliciously? Gaara pondered on this as he sat staring out the window. It was Saturday and it was raining heavily. After the week he’d had, he figured he deserved a break. Gaara growled in frustration as memories from the past week swam through his already thought cluttered head.

It was that damn blonde that continued to pursue a friendship with him. Every time he was around that Uzumaki kid he felt a strange feeling in his chest. It was times that he thought about it that Gaara placed his hand above his heart, not understanding what was going on. Nobody had ever made him feel this way and it frustrated Gaara to no end. Banging his head against the window, Gaara let out a frustrated sigh.

There was no way in hell he would let the blonde get to him. The boy, like many before him, would leave him be before long. Ignoring the blonde would work well. But why did the thought of the blonde leaving him create such a pain in his chest? As though he needed him? Gaara shook his head as though trying to rid the thoughts from his mind. But he couldn’t help but wonder why it is he can never tell the blonde to go away?

Gaara sighed and left the window’s side. He’d enough of staring at the rain. Reaching for his notebook, Gaara started to write. He had planned on writing something dark or maybe something tragic like he normally would, but with Uzumaki Naruto stuck in his mind he wrote of him. It seemed there was no peace from these thoughts.

Deciding that he should do something else, Gaara started to draw. He was no the best and he never planned to go anywhere with his artwork. Compared to Tsuki’s artwork his was mediocre. But it helped get his mind of things when poetry didn’t work.

While trying to clear his mind Gaara let his hand roam. First a head appeared. It wasn’t much and was merely the basic shape of a head. Then came the neck and after that the abdomen. Following that were the arms, both just bones with bits of rotted skin falling off. The face was next. For some odd reason Gaara drew the face before the lower body. It was after the nose, eyes, and mouth were drawn that Gaara dropped his pencil. He was drawing whisker like marks on the cheeks; he had been drawing Naruto.

Gaara scowled down at his unfinished picture before balling it up and throwing it away. It seemed that he would have to find something else to occupy his mind from the blonde.

“Why can’t I get him out of my head?” Gaara questioned himself softly. “There’s just no way he’s…” Gaara trailed off, not wanting to say the word out loud.

But there seemed to be nothing that could rid him of the persistent blonde that often swam through Gaara’s thoughts. Sunday was clear. The only sign of the rain from the day before were the puddles that littered the ground. As Gaara walked to the lake his visited often for peace, he found a certain blonde waving at him from the other side of the street with a wide grin on his face.

“Damn it,” Gaara muttered to himself.

When Gaara didn’t respond Naruto came over to him. Walking as quickly as possible, Gaara tried to escape the grinning blonde heading his way.

“Hey, wait up!” Naruto called, jogging over to Gaara.

Gaara sighed and accepted his fate. When Naruto caught up to him he gave Gaara another big grin.

“Hey there Gaara!” Naruto said, nearly shouting in his joy to see the redhead.

“Hello,” Gaara muttered, not really wanting to be there. There was no reason Naruto should even be following him. What has he done to deserve this? Nobody answered, no matter that it was a mental question.

“So, where’re you going?” Naruto asked.

“To the lake,” Gaara answered in the same quiet tone he always spoke it.

Naruto’s grin became, if possible, even wider. Gaara was finally speaking to him, even if it was still single syllables.

Naruto continued to talk and talk and try to coax Gaara into talking. When they finally made it to the lake Gaara sat in his usual spot under a large tree. Naruto sat next to him, not close or far away and for that Gaara was grateful. The blonde knew boundaries, somewhat.

“So what do you usually do out here? You don’t have your notebook or anything,” Naruto observed.

“Think,” was all the redhead said.

Their time at the lake was pretty much like that the entire time. Naruto would just talk and ask questions, trying to get Gaara to open up a bit more, and Gaara would occasionally give answers or ignore the bubbly blonde.

Soon the sky tinged pink, a warning that nightfall was fast approaching. The two had been there since around noon and Gaara was ready to go home. As he was getting up, Gaara heard a soft rumbling. Looking over he saw Naruto grinning sheepishly.

“Sorry. I haven’t eaten since breakfast. Want to go get some dinner or something. I know it’s late but…” Naruto trailed off, blushing slightly, but noticeably.

Gaara turned his back to the blonde. “I can’t… it’s late. I have to go home before its night or my family will worry.”

Gaara scowled at the lie he just told the blonde. His family wouldn’t care if he was out, but they would sure use it as an excuse to beat him. Except Kankuro, but he wasn’t home very often as he had to work to support the three of them.

Naruto frowned but then smiled. Gaara hadn’t said he didn’t want to go, he said he couldn’t. That wasn’t exactly being turned down was it? Maybe next weekend he would ask about lunch or something.

Gaara walked off, leaving Naruto behind. It was seconds later that he heard the blonde following him from the lake. They both walked in silence from the woods that housed the lake. It wasn’t long before they had to part. Gaara walked to his home and Naruto to his.

Luckily enough Gaara managed to get home before nightfall. Being as quiet as he could, Gaara managed to sneak into the house unseen.

When Gaara made it to his room undetected he went straight for his window. The moon was nearly full. Only two more days until he was running free, the wind blowing through his fur. In two days he would have one night of freedom.

A/N: It took forever but I finally came up with something for the chapter. Please, I’m begging you to not kill me for not reviewing in so long. *Hides behind Gaara* Save me Gaara! Anyway, not much, I know. But it’s something, right?

Like it, love it, hate it? Please review! But no flames. Flamers can eat monkey poo!

Oh, and sorry for the errors in the first chapter. I’m new at this.
