Midnight Maundering

Chapter Two - Midnight Maunderings

Sasuke glared up at the roof of the tent, his mind fixed on an earlier conversation with Naruto.

“Do you still love her?” the blonde demanded.

Sasuke rolled his eyes in what he hoped was a bored gesture, but he was actually scanning the area for Sakura’s presence. After having ascertained that she was no where in the vicinity, he stared back at his best friend. “I don’t see why it matters.”

“It matters because she won’t move on until she knows, one way or the other,” Naruto explained to the genius. He was sick of being the shoulder Sakura cried on… at least, when she was crying over another guy.

Sasuke sneered. “You’d certainly like it if I said I wasn’t interested, wouldn’t you?”

“That’s not the point!” Naruto knew his bluntness frequently got him into trouble, but right now, he needed to say this, and Sasuke need to hear it. “Yes, I love her. I love everything about her. There’s only one thing I’d ever want to change.”

Sasuke snerked. So much for loving everything. But he rose to the bait. “What’s that, dobe?”

“I want her to be happy.”

Naruto’s eyes pierced him to the core, and Sasuke couldn’t look away. He knew he’d been hurtful when they were younger, but he thought that surely she’d gotten over it. Apparently, he was wrong, if the cerulean stare he faced was anything to judge by.

“So, what are you going to do about it, Sasuke-teme?”

The Uchiha seethed. It wasn’t his fault she couldn’t make up her mind. Then it hit him. “In the end, we both have to abide by Sakura’s decision, right?”

Naruto nodded, wondering where his friend was going with this.

“Well,” Sasuke steeled his resolve, “then I say we let her decide. Tomorrow, we tell her how we both feel, and we let her make her choice. The looser,” the obvious smirk he wore made it clear Sasuke felt that to be Naruto’s title, “steps aside. End of problem.”

Naruto had agreed; they both knew it was the only fair route. Naruto’s declaration had been very much like him: exuberant, energetic, and heart-felt. Sasuke had merely stood there with his hand in his pockets for several minutes. Finally, he’d looked up to meet her eyes and said, “You know I have to re-found my clan. I need the strongest kunoichi I can find to help with that.”

She’d nodded slowly, not daring to hope, and still in a bit of a daze after Naruto’s words.

“I want you. I won’t let anyone else’s blood into my clan.”

Sasuke’s glare could have lit the tent on fire if he’d put any more chakra behind it, and he finally closed his eyes, throwing an arm over them in an attempt at stop his mind and get some sleep. She’d asked for two weeks to consider their offers, and they had both granted her that. Those two weeks had been hell. Sasuke had tried to do his best to win her over, but even he knew that his social skills were severely retarded. She certainly hadn’t been following the Uchiha like a little lost puppy since he came back from the Village of Sound, and if that long-held crush had withered, he knew he had no chance.

Naruto and Sakura had the kind of friendship he’d always longed for, and so always feared. They were close, he was distant. They were a team, he was the outsider. Yes, she’d liked Sasuke first, and it was only fair he finally have the chance to reciprocate, but life wasn’t fair.

He was going to lose her. He knew it. The two weeks were up, and tomorrow, they’d hear her answer.

Sneaking a glance over at the woman he loved, he wondered what she was thinking. Who was she dreaming about tonight?

Thanks so much for your responses thus far. I hope you're all enjoying the story. I promise, it will pick up soon.
A friend of mine pointed out that some people might not want to vote in reviews where everyone can see. So, if you wish to vote in a semi-confidential fashion, you can e-mail me at: crimson_iris@live.com
This vote is to gather oppinion of which character you all think is going to die. My muse needs foder for thought sometimes, so please, share your oppinions.
Any input is, of course, welcome, but flames will be used to make fondue.
Have a great day and good reading to you all.
