Chapter One
fallen_angelz: Okay, thanks for the reviews! Don't feel too bad, if I find a story remotely like this, I wanna keep reading until the end. Unfortunately, some of those stories are discontinued which totally sucks. Anyway, here's chapter one and I'm certain that it's fairly longer than the prologue. Enjoy!
Chapter One
“Hiro! Hiro, where are you?”
“Look behind you, sweetie.”
A little girl with dark colored hair smiled happily up at a teenaged boy with kind blue eyes. “Hiro, why’d you go away from me?” the little girl asked.
“Because he doesn’t like me.”
“Why?”
“Because I protect you.”
"Sweetie? Sweetie, can you hear me? What’s your name? Hey, kid, snap out of it. Are you alright?” a voice called out to her.
“Who’s that Hiro?”
“Come on, kid, snap out of it. You’re safe now.” the voice said, sounding almost frantic.
Hiro smiled faintly and touched the side of the little girl’s face before answering, “Help. It’s okay to go to the person, my little one. Go to the person, I’ll always be here protecting you.”
Naruto breathed a sigh of relief when the little girl blinked a couple of times, her eyes staring at him with confused eyes. “Good, you’re okay. My name’s Naruto.” Naruto said, offering a small smile. “What’s your name?”
“Naruto? Naruto, where’d you take off to?!” a female voice shouted.
“I’m in here, Sakura! There’s a kid here.” Naruto called back.
“He’s got a friend.” the little girl said slowly.
“Of course. He’s a shinobi. They rarely go into places like the prison you’re in alone."
“Hey, kid, come on back. You’re safe.” Naruto called again.
“I don’t want to. What if he helps the bad man?”
“If he helps Orochimaru, you’d already be in pain. Just trust him.”
“She’s just spacing off. I don’t know what’s going on or if it’s serious or…” the blonde fell silent when a woman started talking.
“Naruto, calm down.” a woman’s voice told him. “We’ll get her out of here and figure out how to snap her out of whatever trance she’s in afterwards. Right now, our main priority is to get the hell out before Orochimaru shows up.”
“See, my little one? They want to help you get away before Orochimaru shows up again. Trust them.”
“I’m scared.”
“Don’t be. You’re safe now. I promise.”
“Look, she’s snapping out of it.”
The little girl blinked a couple of times and looked around quietly, amazed that it was dark outside. She stared in amazement at the fire before her before looking around at the people there. Her eyes widened in terror when she saw a pale man with dark eyes, quickly darting behind the blonde and holding onto his jacket tightly. “Looks like she’s afraid of you, Sai.” a man with silver-gray hair commented.
“Must not be too afraid if she’s hiding behind dickless.”
“Take that back! I bet my Rasengan could kick your ass!”
“Children, stop. You’re scaring her.” the man said lazily.
Naruto and Sai stopped, their eyes falling on the shaking child. “Hey, it’s okay. We talk like that all the time.” Naruto said, offering a warm smile.
The little girl tilted her head slightly as she looked at Naruto, seeing his eyes were as kind as Hiro’s. No, he said his name was Naruto. He wasn’t Hiro. Hiro was waiting for her to come running back if she got scared again.
She nearly jumped out of her skin when the pink haired woman handed some food to her. “Relax, it’s food. You’re practically skin and bone.” the woman said with a pleasant look. “I’m Sakura. That guy over there is Kakashi.”
The girl cautiously accepted the food and sniffed it, checking for any rotten ingredients. One of Orochimaru’s favorite things to do was make sure she was fed rotten food so she’d be in pain and too sick to fight against him. “It’s okay to eat.” Naruto offered.
Slowly she began eating, looking around the camp with cautious eyes. “What’s your name?” Sakura questioned gently.
Naruto felt his heart ache slightly when the little girl shook her head, her eyes telling them that she had no name. She didn’t matter, her eyes said, so she didn’t deserve a name. “Well, you need a name.” Naruto said with a thoughtful look. “Yuki?”
Shake head.
“Aiko.”
Glare.
Everybody watched with amusement as Naruto tried finding a name for the little girl, none of them wanting to offer up any names. If she didn’t like the name, she’d either glare or shake her head but if she wasn’t sure, she’d shrug. Eventually, the child’s attention wandered away from names and she stared up at the full moon as if amazed that such a thing existed. “Mahina.” Naruto stated, his eyes bright with realization.
The child turned her head and looked at him as if wanting to know what he wanted. “I think that’s a keeper.” Kakashi stated calmly. “Mahina.”
The little girl was thoughtful for a moment, mentally trying out the name. She liked how it sounded and silently mouthed the name, deciding she liked how it felt on her lips and tongue. With a pleased look, she nodded her satisfaction. “All that effort for one name.” Sai stated calmly.
“She’s not a baby, we couldn’t just give her a name that we liked. She’s old enough to know what name she likes.” Naruto protested.
“Mahina, huh? I like it.”
“All I did was look at the moon and he knew what to call me. How’d he do that, Hiro?”
“Mahina, come back to reality.” Naruto said gently.
“Your caregiver is getting worried.”
“He’s not…”
“Yes, my little one, he is. He’s your caregiver now. The others know that you chose him and from how he took it upon himself to find you a name, he’s claimed responsibility for you.”
Mahina was silent for a moment before asking, “What if he hurts me?”
“His eyes are like yours. He won’t hurt you.”
“You promise?”
“Mahina.” she heard Naruto call again.
“Yes. Now go back to your caregiver before Sakura starts looking at you again.”
“Okay.”
Mahina tilted her head slightly as she looked at Naruto, silently asking him what he wanted. “Okay, sweetheart, we’re going to have to figure out why you keep doing that.” Naruto said with a calm look.
What’d she do? All she did was visit Hiro because he liked her name. Was that bad? If it was, what would they do? Would they do the same thing that Orochimaru and his followers did?
She stiffened when Naruto brushed her bangs out of her eyes but relaxed when he smiled warmly at her. He wasn’t going to hurt her, he was just worried. He didn’t want anything else bad to happen to her.
Kakashi looked at the little girl quietly, watching how she stiffened when Naruto touched her but relaxed when he offered a warm smile. He was beginning to suspect that the girl had been abused while in Orochimaru’s “care” and from how she had reacted when she saw Sai, Sasuke must have helped with her “care” in someway. Even he couldn’t deny that the two could probably pass off as twins at first glance.
Which was probably why Mahina had thought Sai was the Uchiha and since Naruto was the first one of them that the girl had seen, it made sense that she ran to him for protection. From what Naruto and Sakura both said, the girl showed signs of coming back from her inner world whenever Naruto spoke. When they were talking, even Kakashi could see that the girl had taken to Naruto’s voice and would respond in some small way whenever he spoke.
The Jounin watched as the little girl crawled onto Naruto’s lap and nested against him, breathing a soft sigh of content. It was obvious the girl knew she was safe and wanted to hold onto whatever amount of safety she could. “I’ll take first watch.” Kakashi informed the team. “Sakura, you take second. Sai, you take third.”
“Hey, how come I’m being excluded?!” Naruto protested, careful not to jostle the girl in his arms too much.
“Because you’re playing the role of a bed which means you’ll get to protect the girl.” Kakashi answered simply. “If one of us tries it, though, chances are she’ll scream bloody murder at us.”
Naruto stopped in mid protest, glancing down at the little girl that was looking up at him through half lidded eyes. Even he couldn’t deny that Mahina’s eyes were like his. He could see loneliness reflecting in her gentle blue eyes and wanted to make the loneliness go away. Giving her a name, a sense of identity, had obviously surprised the girl but he could already see that something as simple as a name and being allowed to help choose it had done something good for the girl.
“Alright.” Naruto said with a small nod, feeling Mahina nestle closer to him.
“Good.”
Mahina smiled faintly as she felt her eyelids growing heavier, wanting desperately to sleep. When was the last time she had wanted to sleep? A week ago? Two weeks? Last year? She couldn’t remember, but she liked this feeling of knowing nothing would happen to her.
As sleep overcame her, she felt Naruto run his fingers through her hair and knew that he wouldn’t hurt her like the other guys had. After all, not all ninja were bad. Right?
fallen_angelz: Okay, chapter one is complete. The story will be moving along (not at a snail's pace, thank the gods), but I won't deny that I (like many other writers) get writer's block. I'll attempt to update at least once or twice every week if my computer isn't being a complete bitch/asshole so read and review!
