chapter 2

Grumpy old men. Disgruntled diplomats. Enough paper to paper Mache an entire forest collected into one pile on top of a desk. All this can be yours if your Kazegage goes missing!
“Kankuro, we can’t keep putting this off any longer. Sooner or later someone is going to notice” The elder sister roughly massaged her temple to ease the throbbing headache her youngest brother was causing her. The elder pair had been lucky so far. Visitors to Gaara’s office were rare since most assignments could be assigned by other Jounnin. Gaara’s presence was mostly needed for the huge jobs such as: reconstruction of major defences or attack on the village. But, eventually someone is going to notice when their kazegage hasn’t made his regular appearance at the dinner halls. Gaara wasn’t exactly the type to hang out but, there were various places he could be found when paper work was, once in a blue moon, light. Kankuro tried the training fields, areas of desert where Gaara would practise reforming his sand control and a couple of lookout points. Meanwhile, Temari searched the more sentimental places she knew her brother would wander by.
There was the old swing set. When Temari was just a child herself she would watch over her brother when ever possible. Natural sibling instinct overpowered her father’s orders to never approach ‘that beast.’ There was the old swing where her brother used to sit for hours at a time; another quiet place, alone from all with nothing but his own lonely thoughts. On days when the wind blew stronger than normal, forcing civilians to take shelter, Temari would follow that clump of red hair to those old swings where she would her little brother sitting with his eyes closed until the violent grains settled. She thought of another spot but it was very unlikely, it wasn’t that time of the year. Every early winter, when the evening sky would blossom with such warm and breathtaking colours, the unwanted memory of a deceased mother would rise from the bowels of the earth. And each time the eldest daughter would visit that grave site, there would be another set of foot prints there. Small, innocent feet that grew lonelier every year. He wouldn’t be there. The only place left was the Kazegage mansion.
Gaara’s garden was definitely not the product of his own handy work. Rows of carefully picked stones lined the path way to his front door. Cacti that had been nothing more than saplings had grown to impressive heights. The desert sages were definitely fine pieces of work. Their midnight blue stems had nearly grown past Temari’s knees and provided some well needed colour for the dry, waste land that surrounded them. Temari suspected the chunnin who provided Gaara’s fridge supplies. Is it normal to have an obsessive compulsion to fix your bosses garden. Regardless, it looked pretty.
All appeared quiet inside Gaara’s house. Temari had removed her shoes and began trailing through the various hallways. Her bare feet suddenly picked up on odd vibration along the hardwood. It became stronger, as if coming closer. A sound followed, like the rolling of a massive boulder ready for collision. Something rolled alright. Temari was standing at the corner to two connecting hallways that formed an ‘L’. Something was coming up fast from the left. She braced her feet, silently cursing herself for not turning on the lights full way. Damn energy saving scheme. However, what she saw caused her to want pull out her own eyes just to check they were even hers. She saw Gaara, coming up fast from the end of the hallway….on roller blades?
“Out of the way, Temari! Quick” Her feet, being more responsive than anything else, stepped back and allowed her brother to roll around the corner and zoom away. Soon there was panting coming from where Gaara had just come from. Blonde hair, jump suit and a whole lot of sweat. The kid looked like he’d been running for hours. He stopped, placing his right hand against the wall and breathing heavier than some of Suna’s longest smokers. If Naruto’s blood hadn’t been pumping so hard then he would have gone stark pale when he saw Temari. If he was lucky, Temari would still leave him the pleasure of having a good looking corpse.
There was moment of silence between the blonde pair followed by a ‘Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!’ An incredibly confused Temari stood there, dumbfounded at the sight of her brother somehow appearing from the first hallway again and flattening Naruto. The kid lay sprawled out with the red head sitting on his shoulder blades and smooshing his head into the floor boards.
“Wow, you suck at this, Naruto. That’s me caught you five times now. Again! Again! Again!”
“Uh…Gaara?” Temari took a careful step forward.
“Hey, Temari! How’s you?” Since when did Gaara start using informal speech? Hell, since when did this kid have roller blades?!
“Are you…..feeling okay?” Gaara shot up, driving the wheels of his bright red blades into Naruto’s spine and wagging his finger.
“Hey, hey, hey! I asked first. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have my shadow to catch!” Just before he could dash around that corner again, Temari grabbed her brother by the shoulders and forced him to face her. Her eyes bore deeply into his, scrutinising him intently. She gasped when she saw the colour of his pupils.
“You’re high!”
“Yeah, that’s what Naruto said too but I don’t get it. I’m still on the ground. You’re both really silly” If that smile didn’t crack Gaara’s face then the twitch above Temari’s eye was certainly going to crack hers.
“Temari wait! It’s all a big mistake! I swear!” Temari gave Naruto the deadliest stare he’d ever seen. Must be a running trait in the family. Being on his hands and knees wasn’t really helping the situation.
“Start explaining, Uzumaki.” She snarled “Or your going to become close friends with my fan” A mutt. That’s what he felt like. A mutt tied to the post for peeing on the carpet.
“I…I can’t swallow pills” he quivered. The meeting of Temari’s eyebrows was making him shake. “I can’t swallow pills so, when I need to take painkillers….I put them in cakes. Gaara must have found them and… well…I thought this would be the best place to keep him ‘till they wore off, you know?” Bring on the fan!!!!
“Awwww, don’t get mad at him, Aneki. It’s not his fault. I took something that didn’t belong to me so, I’m the one who should be punished”
“THAT’S OKAY, GAARA! LOOK, THERE’S GOES YOUR SHADOW” yelled Naruto.
“Ah ha! It’s mine now” He rolled halfway down the hall, arms flailing before he turned back and stood at Temari’s side again. He held his arms behind his back, leaned in and gave his big sister a peck on the cheek. “Thanks for visiting, Aneki.” He shined her one last smile before flying off again.
Naruto dared to take a step forward. He threw his arms in front of his face and braced himself for the impaling but, lowered them again when he realised Temari just took her phone out.
“Kankuro, I found him. Yeah, he’s okay. Just under the weather. He didn’t want to let anyone know. So do whatever you can to keep everyone oblivious. Cancel any meeting you can and fill in for the one’s you can’t.” She paused. “Figure out an excuse on your own, dumbass” She flipped the top down and strangely held the device to her chest. Naruto slowly walked the few steps to Temari, holding his breadth the whole time. “He’s never called me ‘Aneki’ before, not even Onee-chan” Naruto wasn’t quite sure what to make of that. His silent question was answered by Temari’s crooked, but heartfelt smile.
The day was definitely something only a shinnobi could endure. Not the physical, oh no. It was simple enough to chase a hyper red head down the halls and stop him from jumping down fifty stairs at once, (six times) it was other things that required ninja control. Like: having stuffed animals glued to the toilet seat and when you try to pull them off, they speak from an unseen source. Several times he would disappear, sending the two blondes into a frenzied panic because they’d thought he managed to get outside. Last thing they needed was the Kazegage playing hopscotch with the academy girls. Two hours in, Gaara had suddenly stopped and started staring at a blank wall in the living room. He had sat there for a full twenty minutes, never moving. The pair seized the opportunity to try and fix some of the mess only to return to another massacre. When they came back, they found every inch of the creamy wallpaper scribbled over with purple marker. The occasional raccoon could be found on the wall behind the couch. Naruto stayed behind to clean the mess while Temari followed the scattered trail of discarded pens and caps to Gaara’s study. She begged to the Gods of the sun that Gaara hadn’t defaced any of the books in there. Some of the manuscripts were nearly a century old!
The stressed blonde finally had a stroke of luck when she found the knuckle head spinning madly in his desk chair, the vale if his Kazegage hat looking like a mini cape for his head. Before he could fall and break his nose, Temari brought the chair to a firm halt, literally picked her brother up from the armpits and planted him on top of the mahogany desk. He must have gotten into the milk at some point, his tunic was stained in various spots with white. His face was practically enveloped by that ridiculous hat so, she removed in order the look her brother straight in the eye and hopefully talk some sense into his stoned system. Her eyes gawked at the sight before her. The hat fell to floor, doing nothing roll across the room to the sound of raspy giggle.
“Like my hair, Aneki? It looks just like Naruto-Chan’s now” When the fuck did he find time to dye his hair?! Why was there dye in the house? Oh god, if that’s bleach his hair will turn pink if they try to colour it back.
Temari sighed heavily, head drooping low and watching her brother’s feet swing back and forth like a child.
“Gaara, why would want to look like Naruto?” She asked wearily, not really sure why she was even asking.
“’Cause he’s inside me, that why.” Well, she had to admit that was cute. Her brother was apparently a bit on the mushy side. She smiled at him and placed her hand on his chest.
“In your heart? Cause he’s your best friend?”
“Well, yeah that too. But also cause he’s in my tummy. Naruto tastes really funny, like salty pennies” he giggled again and clapped his hands. The twitch returned.
“Gaara…do you mean you….oh god” Out of the blue, Gaara suddenly wrapped his arms around his big sister’s neck and gave a little yawn.
“Naruto made feel so happy that night, Aneki. So, I wanted to make him feel happy too. You should have seen me that night, I was so scared cause I didn’t know what was happening to me. But Naruto showed me. It felt really nice” Sisterly instincts were taking over again. There was the great possibility that Temari would never have the chance to hold her little brother like this again. The image of that little boy on the swings suddenly popped into her head, beckoning her to wrap her own arms around her brother’s small shoulders. Another yawn indicated the red head would soon be drifting off.
“Gaara? Would you…call me Aneki again? I really like it when you call me that”
“I can do better than that” *yawn* “I love you, Aneki”
