home at last
Hayate watched as Genma handed in his mission report to Iruka and prepared to go home. The elder nin had been away for three weeks and had only been back in Konoha for a few hours, none of which he had managed to spend with his handsome lover.
With a nod of Iruka’s head Genma was freed to go home and have a few days of recovery, thanks to the Hokage taking pity on him. The mission had been a B rank but it had been long and rougher than was first expected. Even worse was Genma had been paired with Kakashi Hatake, that lazy silver haired ninja had done the bare minimum on there mission, opting instead to walk along with his head buried in a book of porn rather than looking out for dangers. Genma was sure he had done more work than was acceptable for one person. The mission had been to return a priestess back to her village, it wasn’t even meant to last two weeks but due to the enemy nins wanting to kill her (‘to rid the foreign town of hope’ they had said.) the mission had taken far longer than was expected.
Genma had wanted nothing more than to get home as soon as he could and to have his lover fall asleep on his chest, so he knew that Hayate was safe and not going to get worse while he wasn’t around to help. Hayate’s health was worse than usual just before he left, the younger jounin had been hospitalised for five days and was recovering at home when he had been called on for the mission. Genma had tried pleading with the Hokage to send someone else but had been told that there was no other jounin to take his place. Genma had taken the mission, albeit with a heavy heart.
Hayate had been out of work for over a month and was itching to get back into his role as a jounin. The harsh winter mornings always played havoc with his health, the cold morning air burned his lungs and made his cough much worse that usual. Hayate had collapsed one morning as he was scouting the outskirts of town checking the borders. It was Asuma who had found him struggling to breathe and carried him to the hospital for treatment. Genma couldn’t thank the man enough for saving his beloved teen, Asuma had been treated to a meal and many drinks by the senbon sucker to try and show his thanks. After five days in the hospital Hayate had been allowed to go home but had been signed off work until he was able to pass a physical.
Hayate had been upset that Genma had been given a mission when he was in such a bad state but accepted the fact that the village came first. When the two had first gotten together they had promised not to take there personal life into there professional lives, although they had tried to keep the two separate it hadn’t worked as well as it should have.
The younger nin stood at the door in a pair of black combat trousers and a black hoodie, with a multi coloured scarf that was brought for him by Anko on his birthday last year. Anko had said it was to keep him cheerful.
The senbon sucking jounin walked over tiredly as he waved, only just managing to regain his balance as he tripped on a slightly raised floor board.
“Hey Hayate.” Genma offered with a goofy smile.
Hayate smiled and waved back “Welcome back home.”
Genma smiled as he was led out of the mission room by his hand and towards the exit of the old building. “It’s good to be back.”
Hayate nodded as he led his staggering half-asleep lover through the market place.
“Let’s go to yours its closer.” Genma yawned, the effects of not sleeping well for three weeks catching up on him.
Hayate turned to face Genma “Don’t you want your own bed?”
The taller nin shook his head “So long as you are with me I don’t care where I am.”
Hayate smiled and squeezed the hand he was holding “Ok.”
Leading the way down a thin ally with rubbish piled against the house walls, Hayate took the shortcut back to his tiny flat. Shivering as the cold air ate into his bones and chilled him to the core. Genma took off his green vest and wrapped it around Hayate’s small frame and hugged the smaller man to him. Hayate put his had over his mouth as he fell into a coughing fit, his lungs burning from the sudden attack.
“You shouldn’t have come out.” Whispered Genma sympathetically, although he was secretly ecstatic to have the smaller man come to see him back safe.
“I just wanted to give you a nice welcome home.” Hayate wheezed.
“It was a lovely welcome home to see you waiting for me, but your health should come first.”
Hayate shrugged as he clutched the vest to his chest. “I missed you.”
Genma smiled and took Hayate’s hand and led him up the ally and down a backstreet so they came out behind Hayate’s block of flats. “I missed you as well, all I could think about on the mission was how you were and whether you was ok.”
Hayate smiled and took his keys out of his pocket ready to open his door and get inside the heated flat. “I was ok, lonely, but ok.”
Genma pushed the smaller man slightly “I figured you would say that, but I heard differently.”
Hayate sighed as he walked up his stairs and stood in front of his door “Iruka told you.”
The taller nin nodded “He told me that you stayed around his place for the past two weeks so he could keep an eye on you. He knows how bad your health really is doesn’t he?”
“Yeah, he guessed. Good job Kakashi wasn’t there while I was, he would have got all jealous and possessive.” Hayate looked cheekily at the senbon sucker.
“Don’t joke about that! I was the one who had to put up with his lazyness!” Genma joked as he walked into the open apartment and the heat hit him. “It’s like a sauna in here!”
“The heat stops my chest from aching.” Hayate said simply as he removed the jounins vest and hung it by the door.
Genma turned around, a serious look on his face “Is it really that bad?”
Hayate nodded and looked upset “If I am cold then my lungs burn and I end up coughing too much. If its hot then my lungs don’t seem to struggle as much.”
Genma hugged the smaller man and kissed his forehead “There has to be more we can do.”
Hayate grinned “You need to do more missions so I can afford my heating bill!”
Genma laughed “But then Iruka would have to look after you more and I might loose you to him.”
Hayate smirked “That wouldn’t be so bad. You wouldn’t have to take more missions so I can afford my bills.”
Genma smacked the younger man around the head playfully “I will do whatever it takes to keep you with me for as long as I possibly can.”
The sick nin knew he was lucky to have such a caring boyfriend and smiled at the fact.
Genma yawned as his tiredness hit him and rubbed his hands over his face.
“Go and have a shower, you left some clothes here last time, I folded them up and there in the airing cupboard. I’ll fix you some dinner so you can eat at least something before you fall asleep. That sound good?”
Genma nodded before leaning forward and capturing Hayate’s lips in his own, his tongue slip slowly over the smaller mans bottom lips requesting entrance. Hayate was all too happy to comply and opened his mouth to the invasion. Both male’s tongues danced together lazily, neither male battling for dominance, as Genma was almost always the victor.
The elder nin pulled away his lips glistening with saliva from both himself and Hayate. “Sounds fantastic.”
Hayate grinned and pointed to the bathroom “So go!”
Genma did as he was told and headed to bathroom which being in such a small flat was only about five steps away.
When Hayate heard the water running he flicked on the kettle and got some tea ready. Turning on the stove Hayate made a quick dinner of ramen and stir-fried vegetables. Making the tea he placed it on to the table and served up his basic meal into bowls.
Hayate looked at shower room quizzically, the shower hadn’t stopped and Genma had been in there for over half an hour. Hayate called out for his lover bit received no reply.
Walking in to the bathroom Hayate looked into the shower cubicle through the glass door. The smaller nin could contain the laugh as he saw his boyfriend sitting on the shower floor with his head on his knees fast asleep, the water washing down over him. Hayate felt his heart swell with love as he realised that his partner was just as fragile as he was.
Opening the shower door carefully and turning the water off, Hayate shook his lover and called out his name “Gen you gotta wake up.”
Genma groaned and half-heartedly tried to swat the hand away that woke him “Go away”
Hayate laughed at the childishness and shook harder until Genma looked up at his blurry eyed. “Mmmmm Hayate, when did you get here, not that I’m complaining. Did that mean Hokage send you on this mission as well?”
Hayate shook his head very amused with the situation “Your at my flat remember? Come on I made you dinner and tea.”
Genma’s eyes lit up at the thought of food “Oh yeah” Scratching his head the elder nin blushed “I forgot.”
“Don’t worry about it.” Hayate extended his hand to pull Genma up. It was accepted gratefully and Genma was pulled to his feet, although rather shakily.
Genma was wrapped in a warm towel that had been lying over the radiator and sighed in contentment. Hayate shook his head when Genma just stood there and made no effort to dry himself, taking another towel out of the bathroom cupboard Hayate rubbed at Genma’s chest and down his legs until he was satisfied the older man wouldn’t catch a cold, then collected Genma’s spare clothes from the airing cupboard and gave them to him.
“Put them on and come and get your dinner.”
Genma pouted “Not bed?”
Hayate laughed “No dinner first!”
“Why not bed?”
“Cause I cause so.” Hayate couldn’t keep a straight a straight face through the mini-argument.
“Your mean!” Genma pouted as he pulled on the navy slacks and grey t-shirt.
Hayate nodded and walked into the kitchen, closely followed by a yawning Genma. Genma saw the food and immediately brightened up. “For me?”
Hayate nodded and sat down, picking up his tea and sipping it, enjoying the way the hot tea warmed his insides.
“Haven’t eaten anything but rations in three weeks!” Genma said excitedly as he broke open a pair of chopsticks and dug into the meal.
The pair ate there meals in silence, occasionally making happy little noises as the meal filled empty stomachs. When the meal was finished Hayate cleared up there mess and placed it in the sink to wash up later.
“Thank you Hay.” Genma smiled affectionately as his ‘house wife’
“Your welcome, If I had known you were coming home today I would have cooked you something worth coming home for” Hayate was glad to have Genma back, sleeping on your own was just… lonely.
“It was good, after eating protein bars and the few wild berries I could find for the past three weeks that is like a 5 star meal” Genma answered standing up and stretching.
“Fancy some TV before bed?” Hayate asked, still a bit to awake to be heading to bed.
Genma just nodded and walked into what passed as the front room, closely followed by his younger boyfriend. Genma flicked on the TV and fell onto the soft couch his back against the armrest and spread his legs so his boyfriend could lay between them. Hayate grabbed the remote and sat between his boyfriend’s legs, his back against the elder mans chest, soles of his feet flat against the soft dark blue fabric of the sofa. Genma placed his right arm over the back of the sofa and wrapped his left arm over Hayate’s chest protectively.
“This is what I came home for.” Genma said softy as he snuggled down into the sofa.
Hayate nodded and closed his eyes, listening to a weather woman on TV say that the worst of winter was over and the days would be warmer. Hayate smiled to himself, he would be able to take up his duties again soon.
Genma looked down at his boyfriend who had fallen asleep on his chest, safe and protected, just where he should be.
