A Granfather's Strife
Chapter two: A Grandfather’s Strife
Sorry, it took me so long guys. I was just a little fed up with this chapter, but I finished it and I'm happy with how it turned out. Please give feedback. I still have a contest going for those who are interested, please let me know.
A sharp echo of sound swam throughout the room as Sasuke threw open the shoji in Makoto’s private office.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” the fierceness in Sasuke’s voice reverberated throughout the small room.
Makoto stared at him dumbly. “May I help you with something Sasuke?”
Sasuke’s eyes slid to slits as he said, “Don’t pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about.”
Makoto sighed and stared, his blue eyes wrinkling a little as he smiled, “Does it really bother you so much? Yes, Naruto is my grandson, but why is that any concern of yours? Does he being my grandson mean you won’t kill him?”
“No,” Sasuke said as he kept his glare on the old man, “I have every intention of murdering that monster.”
“Then, what difference does it make if I told you or not?” he glanced down at his hands as he continued, “I love my grandson, just like I loved my son, but I can’t be someone that coddles him. He has to grow as a person or as a monster, since you like to think of him as such. I cannot always protect him. This may sound cold, but if he’s meant to live, he’ll live. If he is meant to die, then there is nothing I can do to stop it. Only Kami knows what’s in store for Naruto.”
“If that is the mentality you have, I hope you’re prepared for his demise.”
Makoto’s smile waned slightly. “I don’t know that I can ever be prepared for something like that, and I don’t want you to think that this is going to be an easy kill. I don’t trust you and neither do any of the senior priests; they won’t let you near the sanctuary. You’ll have to find another way in, gannbatte-ne.”
Sasuke glared daggers at him as he slipped through the shoji and shut it behind him.
“He’s an interesting man, isn’t he?” Kakashi was leaning against the wall staring absentmindedly at the trees that dotted along the shrine.
“Have you come to threaten me again?”
“Sounds tempting, but no.” Kakashi replied smirking, “I thought I’d invite you to pick up your duties as a new member of our order.”
He thrust a weathered broom with a bamboo handle in Sasuke’s hands.
“You get the task of sweeping up the shrine, have fun.”
Sasuke knew that the man was taunting him as he set him to work in front of the enchanted door that held his nemesis. He glared at the tall gray haired man’s retreating back as he set to work sweeping the large courtyard. He groaned inwardly as he swept the same place for the millionth time, his eyes drifting back to the flowing spirals that sat no more than ten feet in front of him.
“Hi,” the cheery effeminate voice that dipped into his ears woke him from his daze.
“Are there supposed to be girls at the shrine?” he thought as he stared at the shoulder length chestnut hair, calm bluish-gray eyes, creamy skin, and rounded high cheekbones of the girl in front of him. Her clothes were a flattering pale peridot kimono with a darker emerald hakama. She stared equally hard at him, her small pink mouth pulled into a slight grin.
“I’m Haku,” she said, “Your Sasuke right? I’ve been hearing a lot about you.”
“I’m not surprised,” he replied staring dully at her.
“So, is it all true?” She asked, “You came here to kill Naruto.”
“No, I’m here to kill Kyuubi.”
She rolled her eyes.
“It’s the same thing or didn’t you realize?”
“I’m fully aware of whom the vessel is, but that makes no difference to me. Have you also come here to dissuade me?”
“No, I’m entering the sanctuary. It’s my turn to take care of Naruto. I’m just waiting for Shikimaru.”
She smirked at the attentive look that emerged in Sasuke’s eyes.
“I’m sorry, but I’m a great supporter of Naruto. I won’t let you in to kill him.”
“Ah, this is such a drag,” a lethargic droll sounded behind Haku.
A chestnut haired youth with unruly spiked hair pulled back into a ponytail walked up the courtyard to Haku. His strides were long and slow as if the effort of moving drained him. Sasuke could see blurry copper colored eyes as he walked closer. His eyes were sunken, listless as he stared ahead; his skin is an even shade with small lines darting underneath his eyes. Sasuke noted his strong chin, and the firmness of his rounded face. He wore a plain gray kimono with an equally plain black hakama.
“Your late,” Haku admonished.
“Such a pain,” he said rubbing his neck and staring up at the sky.
Haku sighed in exasperation.
“Would you pay attention?”
His droopy eyes turned to Haku and widened slightly.
“You’re dressed like a girl again.”
“So,” Haku spouted defensively, “What’s wrong with that?”
“It’s distracting.” Shikimaru stated plainly. “Besides you’re a guy, you should look like one.”
“I don’t think I need fashion tips from you,” he exclaimed angrily.
“Do whatever you want,” Shikimaru exclaimed looking more and more tired.
Sasuke kept the shock from showing on his face.
“All this time he had me completely fooled,” Sasuke thought bitterly.
“This is Sasuke,” Haku said as he finally remembered the ebony haired man at his side. “Sasuke, meet the ever sleepy Shikamaru.”
“hn,” he said pushing the broom ineffectually along the stone courtyard.
Shikamaru’s eyes parted slowly to gaze at him.
“So troublesome,” he muttered lowering his eyelids to their former droopy state.
“Well, Naruto’s waiting, so let’s go. Ja ne, Sasuke.”
Sasuke watched curiously as Haku bounded in front of him dragging Shikimaru along. He slipped closer to the enchanted door and peered at them from behind the trunk of a tree.
“Tch, so troublesome,” Shikimaru mumbled before moving into a simple stance.
Haku fell into step beside him. They began to circle around each other. Their bodies moved gracefully, arms arching rhythmically. Their fingers formed complex chakra seals effortlessly as their limbs moved in rigid patterns. They continued to circle each other, feeding off each others energy. Chakra permeated the air making it seem thick. Sasuke’s eyes widened in surprise as the oak door glowed eerily. The chakra seemed drawn to the door. It was as if the chakra was being devoured. A warm gold light enveloped the scenery in front of him. By the time the light dimmed, the two figures he was studying had disappeared.
