Chapter Three
“What happened this morning?” Ibiki demanded harshly when he returned to the bedroom, “'kashi's gone.”
“What do you mean gone?” the Hokage asked worriedly, “Gone where?”
“If I knew that I'd be there instead of here.” the interrogator rumbled angrily, “Now what happened?”
“Nothing happened.” Iruka retorted defensively, “We took a shower together.”
“That's it . . . nothing else?” the scarred man prodded.
“Why are you giving Ru the third degree?” Genma asked protectively, “It's not his fault your husband's unstable.”
“Watch what you say Shiranui.” Ibiki growled menacingly, “There was nothing wrong with him before he spent time alone with your husband.”
“He was acting a bit odd.” the former teacher admitted, “He kept calling me Hokage-sama . . . but he insisted he was alright, just tired.”
“I'm only going to ask one more time, what went on between you two?” The interrogator fixed the younger man with a piercing glare, one that never failed to wring a confession from even the most hardened criminal.
“We had sex . . . the same thing we've been doing all weekend.” Iruka replied warily, “I didn't mean to upset him, he said it was alright.”
“Shit.” the scarred man muttered as he began pulling on his clothes and gathering their belongings, “I've got to go find him. I'll see you two when you get back.” He quickly made the hand signs and disappeared in a swirl of smoke, reappearing in their too quiet home.
“Sweetheart, where are you?” Ibiki called anxiously, “Are you alright?”
“This is all your fault, you know.” Pakkun's growly voice broke in, “I knew you were bad news.”
“What is all my fault?” came the exasperated reply, “Obviously I don't know where 'kashi is or what's wrong . . . care to enlighten me?”
Before the pug could respond Akiko came barreling into the room, flinging herself into the tall man's arms with an excited yelp. The young ninken's tail was going a mile a minute as she proudly informed the interrogator that Bull and the copy-nin had gone to collect the twins.
“Is he coming back home?” the scarred man asked with concern, only to find that she wasn't finished with her message. After listening carefully, he headed into the bedroom, quickly pulling on his uniform and grabbing his coat before heading toward the Sarutobi's house.
“Morning Asuma.” he declared when the door cracked open and a sleepy bearded face appeared.
“Kitchen.” was the mumbled response as Asuma wheeled and headed back to bed.
Ibiki slowly approached the kitchen, stopping outside to eavesdrop in hopes of getting a better feel for what was bothering his husband. Unfortunately, all Kakashi seemed to be doing was talking to the twins and humming noncommittally whenever Kurenai tried to ask him a question. “Good morning sweetheart.” he rumbled when he finally abandoned his position and headed inside, bending to plant a tender kiss on a pale cheek, “I missed you when I woke up.”
“Mmhmm.” the copy-nin hummed, refusing to turn and meet the tall man's eyes, “I didn't think you'd mind.”
“You were wrong.” the interrogator declared firmly, “I was worried , , , is there something you want to talk to me about?”
“Nope.” the jounin replied absently, “I'll see you when you get home from work.”
“Do I at least get a kiss?” the scarred man prodded, unwilling to leave when his husband was so obviously upset.
Kakashi turned and planted a hasty kiss on the interrogator's cheek, immediately turning back to the twins before Ibiki had time to study his face. “Enjoy your day.”
“I'll see you at dinner.” the scarred man rumbled, “Sorry to bother you Kurenai.”
“Don't worry about it . . . it's always good to see you.” the kunoichi replied cheerfully, “Let me walk you to the door.”
As soon as they were out of earshot the dark haired woman rounded on him, planting a determined hand on his chest to hold the interrogator in place. “What happened?” she asked, coming straight to the point.
“I can't tell you that.” Ibiki replied softly, “It involves other people, it wouldn't be fair.”
“And 'shi-kun ending up like this is okay?” she demanded, “I don't really think you believe that . . . at least I hope you don't.”
“Of course not.” the tall man snapped, “I'll make him talk to me about it later, once he's sorted it out in his own mind. If you were paying attention you would have noticed he wasn't telling me anything either.”
“I didn't see you trying very hard.” Kurenai insisted aggressively, “You're supposed to protect him.”
“I don't need protecting.” the copy-nin insisted flatly, causing the pair to turn and gape at him in embarrassment. “I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself, thank you very much. We're heading out Kurenai,” he continued smoothly as he hoisted the diaper bag onto his shoulder, “do you want me to drop them off or will you be coming to get them.”
“I'll pick them up 'shi-kun.” the kunoichi decided, squatting down in front of the stroller to kiss her children before Kakashi hustled them out the door, Bull padding silently in their wake.
“Wait up a second Bull.” Ibiki entreated, “Can I talk to you for a minute?”
“Make it quick.” the hound rumbled, “I don't want the boss to realize I'm talking to you.”
“What did I do?” the interrogator demanded, “I thought you guys had accepted me.”
“The whelp smells funny.” the ninken explained, “He left with you . . . it's your responsibility.”
“He smells funny?” the scarred man asked, confusion obvious, “Funny how?”
“Just wrong.” Bull declared, “I can't explain it . . . I've got to go.” With that he bounded after the retreating copy-nin, once again taking up the rear guard position as they headed into the village.
“Smells wrong . . . that's certainly no help.” Ibiki grumbled.
“I wouldn't put too much stock in what Bull says.” Kurenai declared with a sniff, “He obviously doesn't understand humans.”
“Why would you say that?” the interrogator wondered, “He's wonderful with the twins.”
“That's true.” the kunoichi admitted, “But he completely ignores poor Asuma . . . and insists on referring to me as the boss's bitch.”
“Not in a nasty way.” the scarred man hastened to assure her, “He thinks the twins are 'kashi's, apparently they smell like him.”
“That's going to be a problem someday.” the dark haired woman decided, “Especially if he says it in front of 'suma.”
“I can try talking to him about it.” Ibiki offered reluctantly, “Although Akiko is the only one in the pack who actually respects what I have to say.”
“I certainly appreciate it.” Kurenai replied gratefully, “I'd hate to have it cause problems.”
“I'll see what I can do.” the tall man promised, “No guarantees though. I better get going, my staff tends to get a little worried when I'm late.”
“I'm sure.” the dark haired woman retorted with a smile, “I'll talk to you later . . . and make sure you push until 'shi-kun tells you what's wrong. You've got to be firm with him.”
“I promise.” the interrogator agreed grimly, “I'm worried about him too.”
The copy-nin breathed a sigh of relief once he and the twins were safely ensconced in the familiar confines of the bookstore. Everything's fine, he assured himself, you're just overreacting. Relaxing completely for the first time in days he settled himself comfortably behind the counter and was soon lost in the pages of a good book.
The silver-haired man was startled out of his reverie when the bell over the door rang. “Welcome to Hatake-san's, how may I help you?” he asked as he marked his page, finally looking up and locking eyes with Hyuuga Hiashi.
“Hyuuga-san, it's nice to see you.” Kakashi murmured, “What brings you here today?”
“The council has a proposition for you Hatake-san. Would you be able to meet with us later today?” the dark-haired man inquired formally.
“I'm watching the twins.” the copy-nin demurred, “Is that a problem?”
“Oh no, no . . . it won't take long.” Hiashi assured him, “You'll be back before you know it.”
“What time?” the jounin asked absently as he scooped up Ko just as she opened her mouth to fuss.
“Noon?” the Hyuuga offered, “If that works for you, of course.”
“Where?” the copy-nin continued as he checked the little girl's diaper before handing her a bottle and settling her in his lap.
“The teahouse.” the dark haired man decided, “We can eat while we talk.”
“I'll see you then.” Kakashi agreed with a nod, attention immediately going back to the child in his arms, barely noticing when the bell rang again signaling his visitor's departure. The council huh, he thought, this should be interesting.
“What happened this morning?” Ibiki demanded harshly when he returned to the bedroom, “'kashi's gone.”
