Chapter Thirty-Four
Chapter Thirty-Four
Iruka shifted nervously from foot to foot, running his fingers over the kamon embroidered over his heart. He glanced over at the man next to him, noting how handsome he looked in his matching formal attire, smiling fondly as he remembered how nervous the copy-nin had been when he presented him with the montsuki kimono, how his hands had fumbled with the material as he hurriedly explained that it would be okay if he said no. “I just thought,” the jounin had finally whispered, “that it would show you’re mine.” referring to the clan symbol richly embroidered on the back and chest.
He turned back to face the Hokage as she began to speak, squeezing the copy-nin’s hand briefly to reassure himself that this was actually real. “My friends,” she began, “I am honored to be here today presiding over the wedding of two of my favorite shinobi. Hatake Kakashi, devoted protector of this village and its people and Umino Iruka, equally devoted teacher of our next generation. I cannot think of two people who deserve this happiness more.”
“Marriage is a serious endeavor,” she continued, “one which requires infinite patience and an unfailing willingness to put the welfare of another above your own. As the merging of two lives it is a balance that requires flexibility and good humor to maintain. But above all these things, the core of a marriage is love. It is the glue that will bind you ever more tightly together as you continue your journey forward as one.”
She lifted the cushion holding matching platinum bands, noting the inscription inside with a small smile before continuing. “May these rings be blessed as the symbol of this loving union and how these two are joined as one unbreakable whole. Wherever they go, may they always return to one another. May they find in each other the love for which all men yearn. May they grow in understanding and compassion. May the home they make be a place where all are welcomed as friends. May these rings symbolize the permanence of this bond.” she handed a ring to Kakashi, “Hatake Kakashi, place this ring on Iruka’s finger and speak your vows.”
The copy-nin gently slid the slim band onto the teacher’s shaking finger, before locking gazes with him and beginning. “Iruka, know that you cannot possess me for I belong to myself, but while we both wish it, I give you that which is mine to give. You cannot command me, for I am a free person, but I shall serve you in any way you require and sustenance will taste sweeter coming from my hand. I pledge to you that yours will be the name I cry aloud in the night and the eyes into which I smile in the morning. I pledge to you my living and my dying, each equally in your care. I shall be a shield for your back and you for mine. I shall honor you above all others, and when we quarrel we shall do so in private and tell no strangers our grievances. This is my wedding vow to you. This is the marriage of equals. In all our lives, may we be reborn in the same time and at the same place that we may meet, and know, and remember, and love again.”
Tsunade smiled at the heartfelt words before handing the other ring to Iruka. “Umino Iruka, place this ring on Kakashi’s finger and speak your vows.”
A tear slipped from the corner of Iruka’s eye as he slid the band onto the copy-nin’s finger, but his smile was wide and his voice firm. “Kakashi, know that you cannot possess me for I belong to myself, but while we both wish it, I give you that which is mine to give. This is my wedding vow to you. This is the marriage of equals. In all our lives, may we be reborn in the same time and at the same place that we may meet, and know, and remember, and love again.”
The two remained hand in hand, eyes locked for a long moment before the voice of the Hokage broke the spell. “Being as these two have pledged themselves to each other before all those gathered here, as Hokage of the Hidden Leaf I hereby declare you married. May you have many years of happiness together.” Then she added with a smirk, “You may kiss your husband.”
Before the words had even left her mouth, however, Iruka was pulling down the mask and slanting his mouth over his new husband’s in a long tender kiss. When they finally broke apart he carefully adjusted the jounin’s mask before turning to face their guests, blushing brightly at the catcalls and taunts from the crowd.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Tsunade declared, “may I present Hatake Kakashi and Hatake Iruka.” There were claps and cheers from those assembled before the pair wandered off arm in arm to mingle with the guests.
I would never have imagined all of these people in one place, and for my wedding, no less, Iruka thought as he surveyed the diversity of the attendees. Since Tsunade had announced her imminent retirement and Kakashi’s acceptance as the future Rokudaime, the daimyo of Fire Country as well as the Clan heads and Council members were in attendance to show their support of the next Hokage. Iruka’s students, both past and present, as well as his fellow teachers and mission desk staff had also shown up in droves. Topping it all off were Kakashi’s nin-ken, who had, indeed, eagerly accepted Iruka into the pack after being given some time to think about it.
As they moved through the crowd the newlyweds never lost contact with each other, constantly having an arm around each other’s waist, or walking with clasped hands. Iruka, in particular, practically radiated happiness, the joy he was feeling surrounding him like a warm halo. Ibiki stopped them to wish them well, and to remind Kakashi to treat Iruka properly. “Certainly, Moreno-san, I treasure his well being above my own.”
“Leave him alone ‘biki,” Iruka retorted as he teasingly punched the interrogator in the arm. “Now we need to find someone for you.”
“I think not Iruka,” he replied in a soft gravelly voice, “I’m not as lucky as Hatake here, it takes a special man to overlook scars like ours . . . the ones that show, and especially the ones that don’t.” he took a sip of his drink before continuing, “Take care of each other.” he soberly concluded before turning and striding away, heading back to his office and away from the oppressive crowd of bodies.
“MY ETERNAL RIVAL!” boomed a hearty voice from behind them, and Iruka felt the minute shiver that ran through his husband’s frame. They slowly turned, only to be confronted with the spectacle of none other than Maito Gai in a blinding green kimono arm in arm with a smiling Anko. “I AM OVERJOYED THAT YOU HAVE FOUND SUCH YOUTHFUL AND EVERLASTING LOVE IN THE SPRINGTIME OF YOUR LIFE!! I WEEP MANLY TEARS OF JOY . . .”
The teacher heard no more as the copy-nin grabbed his hand and whisked him away. They found themselves in a secluded corner of the garden, tucked away from well wishers and prying eyes. Kakashi was quick to take advantage of their seclusion, pulling down his mask and gathering the teacher in his arms, covering his smiling face with eager kisses before tenderly capturing the mouth he could never get enough of.
They stayed in their little hideaway, kissing and cuddling, whispering tender endearments and simply basking in each others’ presence as the world continued on without them.
