Chapter 4
May Fate be Found in Sand and a Raccoon Filled Afternoon
Temari looked at the three youths that she and Kankuro had dragged in. She had already been awake, thinking over her day’s events; when she had heard the knock. She had opened the door and saw the three of them. She hadn’t known who was who until they were inside. Their bodies told the story of their day. Sun burns that had gotten through the Kohona sunscreen. Parched cracked lips, and dry heavy breaths. They were exhausted.
“You can tell that they’re not used to desert travel.” Kankuro said as he lifted Naruto onto the couch, next to Sasuke and Sakura.
The two Sand siblings looked at the three. They were probably going to sleep the whole day away. They regarded each, having seen them off and on, but not recently enough to not be surprised at how they’d changed.
“He’s even more handsome.” Temari said distantly, as a small quirky smile spread across her lips. She smiled kindly at her brother as he shot her a look. “I’ll be okay.”
“Okay.” he said as he looked at their now sleeping forms. He tiredly looked out the window and saw the sun rising. “They must have spent all night out there.”
“Yeah.” Temari did a small stretch. “I’m going to start making breakfast, you want anything?”
“Uh, bacon and eggs?” Kankuro offered as he walked after his sister.
“Can you make the toast?” she asked as she got out the pan.
“When the time comes sure.”
Kankuro watched his sisters slightly jerky movements. She was hurt, badly from what her boyfriend had did. He hadn’t wanted to ask her what had happened, but instead planned to go out later and ask him man to man. He knew that his sister could do better, but at the same time she couldn’t. Knowing that she was the older sister to Gaara of the Sand, the options for male companionship went down. She would leave herself open to these men, the types that Gaara would have killed without a thought only some years ago. The type that Kankuro knew that he could and would kill without any remorse if they actually harmed his sister. He sighed inwardly, he hated this sometimes. The times when there was no longer anything to be said, and nothing could be done. Everything had already happened and had it’s consequence so all one could do was just sit and view the ending product.
“Stop staring at her like that.” came Gaara’s soft voice.
“Gaara.” Kankuro managed calmly as the shiver ran through his frame.
“So their here.” He observed as he looked over to the couch. ’Uzumaki Naruto … you’ve changed.’ Gaara thought as he walked around in front of them.
“Gaara, don’t wake them, their sleeping.” his brother idly scolded with a smile. “They wouldn’t wake you.”
“They wouldn’t dare.” he said with a small smile. He looked at his sister and felt his heart thud once. Her cries, she had cried the entire day yesterday, at least until she had fallen asleep. He wanted to know what had happened, he could tell that Kankuro knew. He just hadn’t found the right opportunity to ask. Part of him wanted to crush what made his sister sad, but part of him also knew that there were other ways to get anger out. He had been learning that a little everyday over the last years.
“Kankuro toast.” Temari ordered as she turned off the bacon and eggs. “I hope you want some bacon and eggs too Gaara.”
He didn’t make any response, but still she grabbed three plates, and started putting the food on it. He walked over and started setting the table. The three moved together easily in the kitchen. Each knowing where to and where not to be. Finally the three of them were sitting, with bacon, eggs, and toast on each of their plates.
“So what are you guys doing today?” Temari asked, wanting some conversation.
“I was planning on going out.” Kankuro said as he wolfed down an egg with a slice of toast topped with three strips of bacon.
“Really.” Temari was trying her hardest to not be disgusted. “Where are you going?”
“You know, just out. Pretty much just to look around the market, see if there’s anything I want to buy.” he said as he started to slowly eat the rest of his meal.
“Want company?” Gaara asked before Temari could ask anything.
For a moment a semi-awkward silence filled the room, then it lifted when Kankuro told Gaara that he could if he really wanted to.
‘What are they up to?’ Temari wondered as she took a bite of toast. ’Well it can’t be much. Kankuro knows better than to drag Gaara into anything.’
Kankuro raised an eyebrow at Temari. “So we haven’t figured out where their sleeping.”
Sigh. “We’ll talk it over with them … well actually I have one idea. Now however well it goes over with you two remains to be seen”
“What idea?” Kankuro asked.
Temari took a deep breath. “Okay here it is …”

Kankuro walked through the town with Gaara. At times he did like having the reputation he had. People parted away from them and never stood in the way. Which is exactly what Kankuro wanted as he quickly strode through the city. He knew where he was headed, and he knew that he would at the very least beat the man that made his sister cry.
Gaara favoured some of the people with a searching look as he quickly walked with his brother. Little swirls of sand where following his steps. He was relishing the anger that his brother was throwing off. Still he was alert though. He wasn’t used to Kankuro being this serious, or this mad. Suddenly they stopped in front of a door, to a home he didn’t know.
“Gaara.” Kankuro started as he balled a fist. “We’re not going to kill him okay, just going to hurt him.” he wanted to make absolutely sure that his little brother knew that.
“Why.” Gaara asked, wanting an answer for everything.
“Because I don’t want to kill him, he can’t feel pain if he’s dead.” Kankuro felt his eyes narrow as he looked at the door. ’Bastard better be home.’ “And second he’s the one that made Temari cry.” he watched with satisfied eyes as Gaara’s narrowed slightly. “Okay?”
“Okay.” Gaara was ready to make this person hurt. He wanted him to hurt as much as Temari was hurting.
Kankuro knocked confidently on the door and waited a moment. The sounds of somebody approaching quickly becoming louder.
“Hell-” the young man started as Kankuro pulled him out the door.
“We’ll teach you to dump our sister in a cowardly manner.” Kankuro threatened with a toothy smile.
“Wha - Temari …” eyes flashing in fear. “Our?”
Gaara watched as the young man, who reeked of liquor looked at him. Mostly for show Gaara had his sand lift up around him threateningly. He watched with pleasure as the man began to scream for his life. Kankuro threw the man against the wall of sand, it wrapping around him and holding his fast.
“We’re not going to kill you.” Kankuro said in a venomous voice.
“Yet.” Gaara said with a crazy smile spreading over his lips as his eyes went wide.
“NO! NO, NO, NOOOOOO!” the man screamed as the two began their assault.
* * *
“Where have you two been?” Temari asked as she looked at the clock. They had left four hours ago, the market was only thirty minutes away. She couldn’t imagine that Kankuro, let alone Gaara would look around the half block for more than an hour.
“Ah, just dealing with some things.” Kankuro said as he came in. He smiled at his sister as she narrowed her eyes at him.
“We got you something.” Gaara said as he walked over to his sister.
“Really?” this new piece of information leading her mind away about her brothers suspiciousness. Quickly she opened the flat square box. She hadn’t really ever been given a gift before, especially by both of her brothers. Her eyes lit up when she pulled away the thin paper covering.
Both boys watched as their sister pulled out the long deep blue coat. Kankuro knew that she’d been wanting it for some time. So he and Gaara decided to buy it for her. Also in the vain attempt that she would forget about them being out so long, it seems to have worked.
“Mm.” came a small noise from the couch.
Gaara being the closest went to see who was waking. He saw Sakura’s eyes opening slightly. He could tell by their slow rolling movement that she was still exhausted. Finally her eyes focused on him.
“Hn.” she leaned forward slightly to look Gaara right in the face. “Hmm.”
Gaara raised an eyebrow at her, not quite understanding what she was doing. He looked right at her emerald eyes. He could almost feel his stomach lurch at their focusing and defocusing pattern.
“Heh! A racCOON!” Sakura cried as she lunged out at him and hugged him around the neck.
Temari and Kankuro couldn’t hold in their laughter. They had heard their bother called a lot of things, but never a raccoon. Temari braced herself against the corner of the counter as Kankuro had to sit down in the chair next to the door. They didn’t care that they were laughing at their little brother, it was just too funny.
Gaara scowled at his brother and sister, then started to pry Sakura off of him. “Get off Sakura.” he told her quietly. When she didn’t move he sighed and sat on the coffee table just behind him. He discovered that this touch was far different than any he had yet encountered, so in that regard he didn’t mind. At least for now.
“Here let me.” Kankuro laughed quietly as he unhooked the drunkenly tired girl off of his brother. Gently he lifted her into his arms and looked to the couch.
“Hmm.” sounded Naruto as he sat up. “What’s … what’s happening.?” he looked around, his eyes slowly falling into focus. Finally his eyes fell upon Gaara sitting before him.
“Hey! Gaara!” Naruto exclaimed as he stood quickly.
“Hug me and die.” Gaara said as he looked at the Uchicha stir.
“Naruto … could you be any nosier.” Sasuke wondered aloud as he sat up and leaned on his knees with his elbows.
“Look Sasuke! We made it!” Naruto said as he stood quickly and started going around. Then he saw Kankuro with Sakura. “Sakura!” he went over to her. “What’s wrong?”
He looked worriedly at the girl in Kankuro’s arms. He kept calling her name as he looked at her. He watched as her brows came together slightly, twitched, then relaxed, then twitched again. “Sakura? Are you okay? Sakura are you awake? Sak-.”
“NARUTO!” Sakura cried as she sat up suddenly. “SHHH! Geez, you’d think I was dead or something by the way you were going about.” a questioning look as she registered that she was almost eye level to him. “Huh?” Sakura twisted slightly and looked right at Kankuro. He had a pleased smile on his face. “What are you smil-” she felt her ass get squeezed.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t help it.” he answered honestly as she jumped out of his arms and against Naruto who helped set her down gently. He smiled broadly as she gave him the meanest look she could muster right then. She was more mad at not being able to hide her amusement than him actually touching her.
“Kankuro, don’t alienate our guests.” Temari scolded as she came forward. “You three had quite a night, I’m surprised that your all awake.”
“We’re resilient.” Sasuke said as he stood and looked down at Gaara.
“I’m sure you are.” Gaara said as he stood. ’Damn, still shorter than him.’
“Umm.” Sakura started as she looked at everybody then to Temari. “I really don’t mean to be a downer, but is there a place I can sleep for a bit?” Taking a deep breath. ’Boy I feel exhausted, how do those two do it?’
“Unlike those two apparently, I still really need to rest.”
“Heh.” Temari twitched.
“Well.” Kankuro started with a small smile.
A sigh was all Gaara could manage.

Thanks to all who commented!
Akuma_river - Heheh, I’ve read that it would take three days (Neji said) and Lee and Gai were going to try to make it in a day and Tenten called them crazy. (Not exactly that, but I’ve heard it mentioned enough, but this particular time in the Manga. *looks around, whistling* hehe *embarrassed* I wrote a whole slew at once so I hadn’t noticed this was where it had began before I had a few good chapters about them in reference to their horrid desert travel, and I liked where I was, but I couldn’t really think of a way to get to where I was if I were to go and fix it … so I decided I would look like a dork and well ^^ heheh … I’m a dork. Thanks, I will keep it up!
Defangel - WAY TO GO!!! Congratulations on naming the song! And thanks about liking my story, encouragement is a really good way to be able to get into the writing mood. ^^ Your not the only ones looking forward to the pairings *Wink*.

Arryella(aka. SexGoddess) - Well thanks a lot and I am honoured that I have fetched the review of a new Reviewer. Yes there will be lemons when the time comes, an example of my lemon ability is displayed pretty much in my other story “Something only you can give.” I will admit it’s not for everybody it’s a Yaoi pairing between Gai and Lee. But if you look past that and just read and feel the words, I’m sure you wont be disappointed. (That is if your asking as in ’Yes I do want to read Lemon’ instead of ’I want to know so I can avoid this altogether’) And thanks for saying that, because I was worried that my plot wasn’t as great as I thought it would be.
Well Everybody THANKS for Reviewing. Review and you will get a little something back in the next chappy!!! SORRY AGAIN FOR THE LOOOOONG WAIT!! Thanks!!!
