I do not own Naruto, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story.
the night before
Tsunade was felling edgy. Here she was, chatting with the man who had single handedly killed the entire Uchiha clan, and his partner, who had killed all but one of the seven swordsmen of the mist.
Over tea.
Itachi lowered the cup from his lips, setting it on the low table beside him.
“Delightful, you must tell me how to prepare this.”
He watched the hokage try to hide her nervousness, frighteningly powerful she might be, but she lacked any semblance of subtlety. Or it could just be his eyes, the sharingan tended to do that to people.
“Now, to business, we would like to secure a guarantee of safety within the borders of the fire country for the duration of the chunin exam. This is because the sound, who I have been told are also participating, have yet to recognize us as an official village. We are prepared to offer generous compensation for this service…”
The official speech wore on.

Naruto and company were trying to check in to a hotel. Deidara and Sasori were already in their room, they had locked it in an attempt to keep the genin from bringing their squabble to the jounin.
There wasn’t much they could do about the sounds though.
Naruto took the key from the clerk, who then turned to Ino.
“And this is for the young ladies room…”
“Gaara will be taking the other room.” Naruto interrupted.
“What! Says who! You little bastard!”
Soon, a fight had developed in front of the desk. This fight stopped rather suddenly, when Gaara closed the door to the second room, and the turning of a lock could be heard.
Ino was instantly scrabbling at the door.
“Let me in you red haired freak! I’ll kill you, I swear it!”
Three hours later, Ino was sitting in Naruto and her room. Granted she was hunched in a corner, determined not to go to sleep until Naruto started snoring.
Naruto was lounging in the window frame, staring at the moon.
I wont go to sleep, I wont go to sleep, I won’t go to slee…
Her internal monologue was interrupted as naruto spoke.
“You realize that no matter how much you hate this, you’re stuck with me until you die now.”
She was about to start yelling at him, when she realized something about his words.
For the first time since she had met him, years ago in the chunin exam, he didn’t sound cocky. He sounded sincere.
He continued.
“In one week, I’ll gain access to more power than I can dream of, but it still won’t be enough to break the seal. You can’t leave, but if you chose to accept this life, it isn’t so bad.”
As he spoke, he dropped from the window, landing on the floor. He pulled off his shirt, revealing a glowing spiral seal on his stomach.
“I should know.”
He turned around, revealing a seal identical to hers on his left shoulder.
She stared, He was part of the Akatsuki, they had sealed one of their own?
He turned back around.
“What, you thought I was always loyal to the Akatsuki? When they first captured me, I wanted to kill them all. It took me months to accept the fate I’d been dealt. This seal is still active, if the leader were to will it, I would die.” He smiled at her. “There is no escape, but you can choose to make the most of this life.”
He crawled under the covers of the futon, and dropped off to sleep, leaving Ino to her thoughts.
Make the most of this life…
She sat for a while, looking at the strange boy. Somehow, after his talk, he seemed more human.
Maybe he’s not so bad.
She crawled under the covers on the other side of the futon.

Across town, Sasuke was having a bad night. His sleep was plagued by nightmares.
“Sasuke-kun, Sasuke-kun! Are you alright? You were crying in your sleep.”
He opened his eyes, taking in the sight of kin, lying next to him. A troubled expression marring her soft face.
“Yes, I’m fine.”
She smiled, rubbing her head on his chest.
“I’m glad, you get so distant sometimes. I worr…”
She stopped as her throat was crushed by his hand.
“I’m fine, I just have to kill my brother, and for that, I need the mangekou.”
Her face turned blue as she struggled to breath, just before she fell limp, she mouthed a single word.
“Why?”
He woke up, panting. Looking to the side, he saw the body of his lover curled up next to him.
Would I really kill her just to get my brother?
Unable to answer, he got up; sleep was not resting for him anyways.

Itachi sat in the room, thinking about his past. The blood falling off his ssword, the screams of the dying.
The face of the only one he spared.
He’s here, in this village, has he become strong?
