The mission went without any hitches or problem and as they started to make their way home Kakashi decided that they should take a slight detour. Shikamaru stood back as Kakashi stopped by a small, beautiful lake. He had no idea of why they were there, but he didn’t like the cold, distant look that suddenly was on Kakashi. It was as if the Jounin had sealed himself of completely. Shikamaru had no real idea of what to do, but he refused to just stand back and let his new friend suffer alone. He noticed that Kakashi’s hands were fisting and un fisting over and over. He walked up to stand beside Kakashi and took one of the tense hands in one of his. Just holding it. Kakashi didn’t withdraw; instead he closed his fingers around the smaller hand.
“My mother drowned here…”
Shikamaru had not expected an explanation, and Kakashi had not planed to give one. But sometimes words have a will of their own, they need to be told. And those four words made Kakashi realise that maybe he should trust more people than just Genma.
“She was a medi-nin, she was here to collect something, I don’t know what… They said that it probably was an accident but…”
“But you think she was killed?”
“No. I think she killed herself. It was about three years after my father’s suicide. She never could deal with it…”
No more words were exchanged. They weren’t needed. Shikamaru knew that he had been trusted with one of Kakashi’s deepest secret, or at least part of it, and that was enough to make him swear a silent oath that he would never reveal it to anyone. And Kakashi knew that Shikamaru would never betray his trust.
A sudden appearance of chakra behind them made both ninjas turn on the spot. Cursing mentally for not noticing this ninja until now. But what they saw was hardly intimidating. A small creature, there was no other way of explaining the new present, was crouching at the forest lining. It could hardly be taller then Shikamaru, probably even about a head shorter, and wore a dark grey hooded cloak. The reason they wouldn’t have described it as a person was the confusing chakra that flooded from it. Not concealed at all, which made them wonder why they hadn’t noticed it approaching. It tilted its head, much like a bird and they felt its intense stare on them. But it didn’t move, just sat there, observing them for a while. Then it took out something from its cloak, it seemed to be a necklace of some sort and held it out for them to see before hanging it on a branch next to it.
“Hatake… Yours…” The voice was faint, almost a part of the wind and held no clue to the gender of the speaker. But before they could ask anything or try to gain any more clues to this mysterious appearance, it was gone.
Kakashi slowly made his way to the swaying silver chain, knowing that Shikamaru had his back without even having to ask for it. His hands started to tremble as he realised what it was that was waiting for him. He gently took the silver chain with the fang dangling from it from the branch and said a silent thank you to who ever it was that had decided to give his mothers, or rather grand-mothers, necklace back to him. He simply stared at it for a long time, until Shikamaru walked up to him to see what he was holding. Shikamaru didn’t need any explanation, he simply understood, it wasn’t really that hard to figure out. Kakashi’s father had been called “White Fang” and he had just been told that the older mans mother had drown here. He took the chain from Kakashi’s hand and placed it around the grey-haired mans neck instead. Silently he wondered who it had been that had known that it was Kakashi’s mother’s necklace, and also had known that this man was Kakashi. But he didn’t remark on it. And a silent pact was made between them to not speak of it again as they made their way back to Konoha.
After that mission they seemed to team up a lot, first out of their own choices, but as Tsunade realised that they never failed a mission when they were teamed up, she started picking the two of them on her own. The more difficult the mission was, the happier the two ninja’s were. Putting them self in the line of fire seemed to be the only thing that really told them that they were alive…
