A Walk In The Rain
A/N: Sorry I have not abandoned anything I'm writing. My laptop went out on me and I lost everything. I have rewritten most of what I had for this fic again. Please be patient with any other that I may have been working on. I'm jobless atm so things are kind of hard, including net access. I'm going to try and get another chapter edited and posted tonight. Please if you read ignore any mistakes I will try to fix later this was posted in a rush. Please review if you do read, so I'll know if I should continue to try and rewrite all that was lost. Thanks!
Chapter Four
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Tenten hated her best friend at the moment. What the hell was so important she’d be forced to walk home? This had to be a bad joke! “Where are you going? I told my mom I was riding home with you today so she is out playing bingo with her friend. So her cell is going to be off.”
“I’m so sorry, I really am but this is important.” Very damn important, Ino wasn’t sure what had caused the full blow out fight between Sasuke and Sakura but even now he was standing out in the parking lot alone. “I mean this might take a while but if you want to wait I’d love you forever.”
“Sasuke, huh?” It had to be him, only for him would she be ditched like a bad apple. Tenten groaned in defeat. “Okay, but this had better not end up a wasted effort. I don’t want you to win but I’ll be pissed if I had to walk home for nothing.”
“Oh thank you, I love you so much. Wish me luck,” Ino squealed in joy and raced down the hall. Finally he was alone and she’d be able to talk to him. She’d slipped the letter in his locker as planned but she doubted it had caused that large of a fall-out between the two. So Naruto had been correct and all was not perfect in Happyville.
There was a large group of girls standing nearby but none of them had the gall to approach him. Ino smoothed down the front of her skirt and beamed her best smile at the tense figure. What she got in return was half a smile but it was better than the menacing look he’d sent towards the other females. “Hi, I’m shocked to see you still here.”
“I’ll be leaving shortly,” as soon as he was calm enough to attempt driving. It was very difficult to maintain his temper as his mind kept trying to drudge up the nasty argument. Sasuke wanted to chase after Sakura but she’d already fled in the car with Hinata. Maybe in a few hours he’d call her and apologize. He hadn’t meant anything he said but had gotten angry. He had no idea why girls felt the need to keep slipping him stupid letters knowing he already had a girlfriend.
“Oh, then I won’t keep you too long. Are you coming to the Seasonal Performance?” She hoped so, that way he could see her dance. Sakura would be in the show also but in the background with the rest of the class.
“Yep, Sakura has been telling me about it. Congratulations on getting one of the lead parts, she said you did damn good.” Sasuke couldn’t understand why the two never hung out anymore. He did manipulate a large part of his girlfriend’s time but he could tell that Sakura really did miss the blonde.
“Thanks,” like she believed that. She could only imagine what Sakura had been saying about her. It was still nice to hear him congratulate her. The idea that he was conversing with her was even better. “Are you going bowling with the others this Saturday?”
“I’ll be there; Kiba has reserved a few lanes for us. Are you going?” He was sure Sakura would like it if she were to show up. Maybe that was a problem in their relationship- they spent too much time together. Whatever was wrong, he hoped they could fix it.
“I think so, Tenten hates to bowl but I’m all for it. Are they having teams again?” She’d slap someone if they did the girl against guy again. Of course the guys were going to win.
“I don’t know but I’ll see you there. I’ve got a few things to do this evening,” like patch things up with Sakura. He gave her the best smile he could in this situation and opened the car door. “Bring Tenten anyways; it improves our chance of winning.”
Sasuke waved at the girl before digging through the glove box to find his phone. Where the hell was Lee anyways? He knew his friend had feelings for his girl but the guy was smart enough not to act on them. It was on a matter the guy had brought up the other day at lunch that he felt the need to inform him of this chat with Ino. Despite his own problems he couldn’t help but wonder what Neji’s reaction would be when Tenten showed up this Saturday.
“I hate her, she’s so dead.” Tenten shrieked to the black clouds beginning to roll in. If so much as one raindrop landed on her she was going to castrate a certain blonde. Wanting to save time she’d cut through the woods behind the school. It was going through the bad side of town but she could handle herself. There was no way in hell she was going to walk down the highway.
“BITCH!” A big fat raindrop landed on her cheek and then another tapped her nose. Of all the days for Ino to try and score a few points, she was so dead! Tenten kicked the nearest rock pretending it was a perky face. What was worse she’d even tried to hunt down the big lug for a ride but his truck had been nowhere in the parking lot. Her luck was rotten, kind of like the trash scattered about the sidewalk.
If she drowned she hoped a date with Sasuke was well worth it. Heh, who the hell was kidding who? There was no way Ino was going to score with him. She had a better chance of scoring with a brown haired idiot that had been annoying her all during class. Not merely talking but the way he had constantly banged his pencil against the table had grated on her nerves. Fuck, it had to be p.m.s. with a vengeance.
A beat up, rusted yellow mustang sped past her only to slam on its brakes several feet away. It wasn’t someone she knew, that was a clunker she’d never forget. It resembled a banana that had been left in the fridge too long. That was definitely not guys from her high school. If she had to guess they were close to her age, probably dropouts.
“Hey baby,” the tallest of the three was the one to speak. Yeah, there was no way in hell she’d forget that gnarly smile. Did people in this part of town not believe in toothpaste?
“I’m sorry but you must have me confused with someone else.” She was definitely not their baby. This was the type of boyfriend that would permanently kill a girl’s social life. Okay, looks weren’t everything but standards people. When had the guy last taken a bath or changed his clothes? There was a large grease spot on the dark blue t-shirt and she caught the hint of musk from the group.
The wind howled around them and a trash can crashed to the sidewalk signaling it was time for them to play. Tenten didn’t move a muscle as all three approached with rotten grins. Okay, kick the leader then run while the others laugh at his discomfort; a sound plan.
“There you are,” the voice had all four turning towards some bushes near a vacant house.
Tenten almost wet herself as the red hair cleared the greenery and out into the open. The last person she’d been expecting to see but any interruption was grateful. What was Gaara doing here? Their house was a few streets down but this was kind of out of the way even for him. “Gaara?”
“Hai,” he shifted on his feet and looked at the puny girl. Anyone that was smaller than him he had to pity. Not to mention he really didn’t care for the assholes that had decided to bug her. His sister had dated one of them a few months ago and things had gotten ugly. “I told you the other street is quicker. Come on, my brother will be pissed if we don’t get back before it starts to rain.”
“Okay,” did the little twerp think that was going to work? It was just him here and did the boy think he was intimidating? Tenten frowned when all three guys didn’t speak but rushed towards the still running vehicle. It was almost too hilarious and she was too stunned to move. “Huh?”
“Come on, it’s going to rain soon.” Gaara snatched his bag from its hiding place in the bushes. He’d dropped it a few minutes ago to go take a quick piss. He’d walked home because he didn’t feel like listening to some stupid chick trying to converse with his brother on the ride home. His brother should have strapped the slut to the bumper and headed for the nearest concrete wall instead of agreeing to give her a ride home.
“Um, where are we going?” She was glad that he’d spoken up but why had he? It had probably saved her a lot of heartache. “Hey, not that I’m ungrateful but why did they take off like that?”
“They didn’t want to get hurt.” Gaara looked up at the sky and frowned. The drops were starting to come down steady now. “It’s going to break soon and I don’t think it’s safe for you to go on alone. They might have driven off but they might come back. Trust me, they’ll target you again.”
“I’ll take your word for it,” she hated goons. They’d bully anyone they thought they could. Why had they been so scared of Gaara? She’d heard that he’d seriously hurt some kid a few years ago but was he really that bad? He was always quiet the few times she’d hung around him. “You didn’t answer my question.”
“We are going to my house. It’s about to storm,” he didn’t think it wise for her to go on alone and risk being attacked. Not to mention the front of his shirt was already soaked. The girl was pretty enough that they’d come back and try if they could. “We’ll get out of the rain. You can call someone to pick you up if you want or you can wait until my brother gets home and have him take you.”
She was going to protest but a clap of thunder had her rushing to catch up to him. There was no way she was dealing with thugs and a storm at the same time. She’d just have to try her mom’s phone when they got to his place. The rain had her trying to outrun him.
Gaara squelched the strange surge of heat in his gut at seeing the way the shirt was now clinging to the girl’s chest. It was a shame he already had his eye on someone else because he could remember this one having a firm soft ass. He use to love helping her up into his brother’s truck. It had been a shame when his brother had broken up with that other one but he had never cared for the blonde anyways.
“Oh, is it me or is it getting worse?” She cried out over a loud rumble from the clouds. Why did it have to storm today? Thankfully, they had made it to the driveway leading to their home.
“Follow me,” he didn’t want to take her into the house because his father was home. He was sure his brother wouldn’t mind if he took the girl up. Hadn’t Kankuro said that if he ever needed the use of his room it was okay as long as he wasn’t home? It had been a reference to getting laid but this was a good reason also. Gaara didn’t have any plans on seducing the girl but it was better than taking her into the main house.
Tenten was confused as she was led around to the back. What was he going to do sneak her into the back door like an unwanted relative? A set of wooden steps led to a single door with a closed shade. The sound of a key being inserted into the lock had her wondering where they were going.
“This is my brother’s room, its best if you wait in here.” He wasn’t about to explain that their father had a bit of a drinking problem. “Set your stuff by the door and I’ll go fetch you a towel.”
She did as he said and wondered why fate was toying with her. Not only had she almost been attacked but she was now standing in a guy’s bedroom. Not just any guy either but Kankuro’s. It was nice though, he had it set up. A full-size bed was in the corner neatly made with blue sheets, a television was not far from the bed along with a disc player and a dresser was set up near the door. There was even a mini-fridge near the bathroom. Catching a quick glance inside let her see that it was a small one.
“Here, try to dry off the best you can. Do you need to use the phone?” Gaara handed her a plush white towel. He felt it safe enough to leave her alone for a few minutes. “There is one over on the dresser if you need it. I’m going to go change and get dry, I’ll be right back.”
“Okay,” she went to work trying to remove most of the water from her hair. There would be no help for her clothes until she got home. They might dry a little before her mother got here but would only get soaked again the minute she stepped outside. After wrapping the cloth around her shoulders she dug for her phone. With luck her mother would be done playing and on the way home.
It rang enough times to force the operator on to insist she not be such a loser. Looking around she wondered why one brother would live separately from the rest of his family? He probably brought all his flings back here. How many girls had lain naked on that mattress? What did she care?
“Did you reach anyone?” Gaara came back through a side door and paused eyeing the phone in her hand. “Sorry, my dad’s sleeping on the couch so I was trying to be quiet. If you didn’t I’m sure Kankuro will be home soon.”
“I tried my mom but she probably has her phone on vibrate sitting at the bottom of her purse. I got the voice mail but that isn’t going to do me much good.” She wanted to leave before anyone came home. What was worse; possible rape or having Kankuro finding her in his room?
“If you want I could always walk you home when the rain slacks up. I think he has an umbrella in here somewhere.” Gaara had seen what a mess they’d made of someone as strong as his sister. He didn’t want to think about what they’d do to this girl if she wasn’t careful.
“That’s okay, I’m sure she’ll be done soon. You don’t need to worry about me I can take care of myself. Don’t let my size fool you,” she had to smile at the anti-social but adorable guy. This was the most she’d heard him speak. He wasn’t as loud and obnoxious as his elder sibling. “You aren’t like your brother.”
“What makes you say that?” Gaara knew he resembled his brother a great deal in the face. He knew the differences between them but was curious as to what her opinion was.
“You’re kind of quiet and he’s rather noisy. He’s a big moron and you strike me as being very intelligent. Not to mention he’s very annoying, rude, dumb and isn’t as cute.” Tenten could say more but saw his eyes widening in shock.
“You like him,” Gaara almost laughed as she quickly denied the accusation. She wouldn’t be the first to fall for his brother’s crass personality. Odd, hadn’t her best friend been with Kankuro? Did she really want her friend’s leftovers? “You can do better.”
“Well, thanks I guess.” She couldn’t believe she was having this conversation with him. Could the day get any worse? She most certainly did not like that dumb ape. He was nothing like her Neji and she wouldn’t date him if he were the last male on the planet.
“Don’t worry ab……” Gaara paused hearing the key enter the knob. The wooden frame swung open to reveal what a mistake he’d made. His brother hadn’t run the bimbo over but had brought her home.
“Gaara, what are you do…..” Kankuro felt his breath hitch spotting the female standing in the corner. Heat coiled in his stomach seeing just how close his brother was standing next to the unwanted company. “Sorry, you’re going to have to use another room today. Take your skank elsewhere.”
“Good idea, but are you sure you’re willing to let your brother have the one you managed to bring home?” Tenten snapped and snatched up her bag. How dare he call her that and to imply that she’d come here to. to. to….. ugh it was absurd.
“Wait,” Gaara felt bad seeing the girl flinch at the insult. What the hell was that about? He’d never known his brother to be rude without just cause, not to a pretty girl anyways. It was possible for Kankuro to assume he’d brought her back for that but there had been no reason for name calling. Not when what had been clinging on his brother’s arm was far worse.
Tenten raced down the steps wanting to get far away. She’d been stupid to come here knowing who else lived in the house. What a fucking prick! How dare he call her that, when she’d done nothing to deserve it? She’d rather risk getting attacked than put up with his sour attitude. She was a skank? What the hell did he call his date?
“Wait, I’ll walk you.” Gaara felt really bad seeing the fresh sheen of tears glazing the large brown eyes. It shouldn’t but the girl had always been polite when he’d tagged along before and it unnerved him to see her being treated that way. He really had to stop hanging around his crush or he’d become completely soft before too long.
“Thanks, I appreciate it.” She did since she was officially stuck walking home in the rain. It just went to prove that not all males were self-centered bastards. Even the moody and quiet ones could turn out to be sweet and considerate on occasion.
A/N: There ya go, hope its okay. Please review, I did have over twenty chapters done for this fic and I've gotten up to the 10th rewritten. Let me know if I should bother continuing the effort. Thanks!
Next Chapter: A night of bowling and brawling...
