Chapter Five
AN: I recieved a few responses on Naruto's 'innocence'. I'm not saying his stupid, people. He flirts with Sakura, used to have a crush on her... Just because he might swing both ways doesn't mean that he's instantly filled with knowing how to have sex with men. Boys don't magically know how to do it, and neither would someone who's for the most part spent two years training with someone who lives and breathes sex with women. (XD Not that I don't love OroxJira) I wasn't putting Naruto down by including his lack of know how on these matters, I was being realistic.
Naruto stared at the ceiling, unable to sleep. Their clothes were being dried outside after a run through the washer, Sasuke suggested that sleeping in the towels was the smarter way. Given the choice between sleeping naked, and in towels... yeah, well the towels seemed like a good idea.
There was just too much that had happened for his mind to easily settle into sleep. Sasuke returned, his exploration of Itachi’s old room, the... things they did together, Sasuke’s bombshell of only liking boys... Then there was who ever he had feelings for. Was it love? Did Sasuke love someone? Naruto just couldn’t think of what boy... Gaara? No, the two didn’t seem to care for each other. Although, neither did he and Sasuke, and they were good friends. Maybe that’s how Sasuke showed he cared. Naruto blinked as another name came to mind; Kakashi? He smirked and imagined that some more. There were stories Jiraiya wrote with students falling for their teachers, of course his master would always pull them away before he got to what Kakashi would probably consider the good part. Naruto winkled his nose; did Kakashi touch Sasuke in the way he had? Though not in the friendly way that Naruto meant it.
Then he worried just who had touched Sasuke before then. Sasuke could put anyone through a wall if they touched him unwantedly. The only person who was strong enough to do so by force was Orochimaru. His fingers curled in the sheets as he glared at the ceiling. Someday he would kill that man, for what he did to the village, for taking Sasuke away and touching him like that, and for the death of the third Hokage. He was sure that before he got the chance, there would be many other reasons to hurt him.
Sasuke sighed and shifted in his sleep, rolling over to face him. Naruto froze and snuck a glance at Sasuke; still asleep, though his brows were drawn together and he shifted uneasily under the covers. He wondered what demons chased Sasuke in his sleep... Naruto touched Sasuke shoulder and lightly shook him. “Hey.”
“Mm?” Sasuke pushed the hand away from him grumpily, opening unfocused eyes. “What?”
“You were having a nightmare.”
“So?”
Naruto snorted and turned his back to Sasuke. “Well excuse me for caring.”
“...Thank you,” he reluctantly murmured.
“Yeah yeah. Night.”
Sakura knocked at the door, then adjusted her hair, probably for the millionth time. She was excited that the two people she called friends were back, and in the same room no less. Not only were they back, but Sasuke seemed... almost normal. As if little time passed between the last time they all went out as a team on missions.
When no one answered, she knocked again, smiling. It figured she was the one that was up first. Though from the way Sasuke had reacted the other day, she was unsure if he was just ignoring her knocks or not. Eventually, Naruto would remember that she was hungry. She wouldn’t barge into Sasuke’s home without at least Naruto’s permission.
The door slid back, exposing a sleepy Sasuke... A sleepy Sasuke wearing only a towel. She knew she had grown up; if he had been like this when she was younger, she probably would have fainted. “Good morning! I brought us breakfast.”
“Food!” Naruto opened the door the rest of the way, snatching one of the boxes away from her. “I’m so hungry!”
Sakura blinked; they both were in towels, yet their hair was dry. “Did you just take a bath?”
“Nooo, I didn’t have a change of clothes that weren’t all stinky, so Sasuke did the laundry... Hehehe, you should have seen it,” Naruto stepped back before he was swatted, ignoring Sasuke’s glare, “really Sakura, he makes such a good housewife.” His eyes grew bigger as something inside just clicked. Sakura more than likely still liked Sasuke, but she had no clue that Sasuke would never return those feelings. He bit his lip and looked away; he would have to tell her. Quietly, when Sasuke was doing something else. It would probably sting, but she needed to know.
“I’m sure you were working just as hard... May I come in?” She looked expectantly at Sasuke, still holding out the other box.
“Yeah, fine... We can talk about when and where dinner will be, ne?” Sasuke stepped back, trying to comb his hair into some semblance of order. Now that the first part of his plan had went off without a hitch, Sakura was no danger to it, and wouldn’t be able to further interfere. Keeping her around would also make Naruto happy, but hopefully in a ‘happy to be around friends’ way.
“Thank you.”
“Hn.”
“Come on,” Naruto grabbed her wrist and dragged her into the kitchen, barely giving her time to remove her shoes before stepping onto the deck. “You might know what we need food wise... There’s really nothing here, and I know Sasuke, his royal prissy ass, won’t eat ramen every day. Shame too, its cheap.”
“I have money,” Sasuke mumbled sitting down at the table with them.
“Suuuure you do. You can be the richest man in the world and still know of the wonderful-ness of ramen. But anyways, as I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted, I dunno how to cook or what sort of ingredients I’d need... so could you help us out and come with us to the grocery store?” Naruto slapped his hand together bowing his head as he pleaded, “pleeeeeease, Sakura?”
“I have time now. Why don’t we go after breakfast? I can write down a few things for you to cook too, that aren’t so hard to do.”
“Wah, Sakura is a life saver.”
Sasuke smirked, nibbling on his breakfast. The store, was it? There were other things he could grab at the store. Things he would need later...
“Do you like it?”
Sasuke blinked, mind pulled from his day dream. “What?”
“The food, stupid. She was asking about the food,” Naruto said around a mouthful of the sweet pastry Sakura brought with her.
“Oh. Yes, its good.”
Sakura smiled widely, “thank you. I cooked them last night.”
“You didn’t have to do that!”
Sasuke wrinkled his nose and brushed his sleeve off as a few crumbs flew from Naruto’s mouth. “Don’t speak with your mouth full, dobe! That’s disgusting.”
“It was my pleasure,” Sakura chuckled as she watched the two boys glare at each other. Nothing had changed. “I wanted to make something special for us.” She cleared her throat and shook off a blush that threatened to reach her cheeks. “I’ve already spoken to Ino, and we’re planning the dinner in... actually, a few hours. So if we need to get to the store, lets do so now.”
“Will Kakashi be there?” Naruto asked, remembering his thoughts from the night before.
“I’m sure he will. Everyone in our class will be there.”
Sasuke grabbed one of the small hand baskets and glanced back at the two. “I’m getting some extra things I noticed we needed around the house. Will you two handle the food?” Without waiting for their response, he walked off, smirking to himself.
“Hey, don’t just dump us with getting your food! We’re not your servants!” Naruto called after him.
Ignoring whatever muttered or shouted protests Naruto made, Sasuke began to browse through the aisle, picking up soaps for the washer and their bathroom, as well as tooth paste, a few brushes... Amenities that he had taken for granted. Giving a sly look back and taking note that Sakura and Naruto were no where to be seen, he slid into the more personal aisle. The woman there looked up at him then moved quickly away, more than likely embarrassed with whatever she was purchasing. Sasuke found a large tube of lubricant and stuffed a few into his basket, hiding them under the rest of his purchases.
A loud yawn alerted him to Naruto’s location and followed the echoing sound. Naruto was eyeing a stalk of leeks dubiously, lightly pushing it away from the cart while Sakura, eyebrow raised, pushed his hand out of the way and dropped it on top of the other food.
“But Sakura!”
“No.”
“But!”
“I said no. You need to eat healthily, or your bodies won’t work properly.”
Sasuke shook his head and drew closer, putting his hand on their cart. He hoped it would draw their attention, but both were stubborn and refused to leave their argument.
“You made me put back the healthy food!”
“Just because ramen has miso, doesn’t make it healthy!” Sakura put her hands on her hips, giving him a look that was suspiciously reminiscent of Tsunade. “You might be able to live on that gunk, but normal people can’t run solely on ramen. They need other vitamins and proteins in their diet. When’s the last time you had any fruit?”
“Er... Does strawberry filled sugar cakes count?”
“No. And here’s how you know why. The words sugar and cake are in the same sentence. For future reference, if you think something’s healthy, but you hear those two words together, or even alone, then you know it isn’t. Now lets get some fresh fruit and we’ll be finished.”
“But Sakura... I don’t know how to cook any of this crap.”
“It’s not crap, its healthy. Sasuke needs a proper diet.”
“I can cook,” Sasuke raised his hand, finally getting their attention.
“You can?” They both stared at him in wonder.
Sasuke felt the need to smack them both, but resisted. “Yes. I did live by myself since I was eight, besides, my mother taught me to cook.” Unlike stupider orphans, he knew better than to live on instant food.
Sakura’s face softened, “oh, I see. Well, we’re almost done, as soon as we get some fruit...”
“I heard. I’m finished, so I’ll check out and meet you outside. I’ll tell the man to put it all under my account.”
Naruto snorted, “look at Sasuke and his fancy accounts and money... stuff.”
“Right. My money stuff.” Sasuke slide his eyes to Sakura, who gave him a knowing look. “Meet you outside.”
“Yes. Come along, Naruto. I’ll show you how to know when an apple is ripe.”
“You know,” Naruto grumbled as he was led away, “ever since you started training to become a medical ninja under grandma, you sure have gotten bitchier. Ouch! Sakuraaaa, don’t hit me so hard!”
Sasuke laughed then coughed to cover it, glancing around to make sure no one saw him. It wasn’t a real laugh anyway, laughing at Naruto just came naturally. He turned and headed for the cash register, setting the basket on the counter. “I was wondering if my money was still good here.” Given that he had abandoned his village, he wouldn’t blame them if they decided to keep the money for themselves.
“Of course son, you’re welcome to buy what you need here.” The older man cracked a toothy grin, taking the items out of the basket. “I’m glad you’re back. Your friends seem to be happy too.”
Sasuke didn’t quite know how to take that. He knew there would be people who would protest against him coming back to the village, he expected it. For someone who he only saw while buying groceries, the man acted warmly. “Yeah, they are... And thank you.”
“No problem. Practically watched you grow up. I was a friend of your mother’s, and if she ever knew I was treating her son badly, why I’m sure she’d be there to haunt me.”
If his mother knew what he was doing, Sasuke was sure she’d do the same. Dead people don’t come back, or haunt people they’re unhappy with. He would have seen his family long ago if they did. “I’m sure.” The man’s smile froze as he reached the many bottles of lube, blinking a little in surprise. Probably not a prying sort of man, he quickly scanned them in and tucked them into a paper bag, folding the top over and setting it inside the rest of his bagged things. “My friends will have a cart of food brought here shortly, that needs to be on my bill as well.”
The man nodded, “alright. Have a good day. Enjoy being back, we’re glad you’re here.”
Sasuke took the two plastic bags and left, waiting outside for Naruto and Sakura to finish. All he had to do was sit through the dinner Sakura and whoever she mentioned was planning, and then he would be done dealing with them. If he was antisocial before he left, he was more so now than ever. He was curious if Naruto wondered at all who he had been hinting at the night before. Leave it to the dobe to miss dropped hints. On the other hand, it wouldn’t effect his plan either way if Naruto knew or didn’t. Act two of the drawn out play was after the dinner, and it would be quite a show. Acting was now one of his strong suits.
Naruto stared at the ceiling, unable to sleep. Their clothes were being dried outside after a run through the washer, Sasuke suggested that sleeping in the towels was the smarter way. Given the choice between sleeping naked, and in towels... yeah, well the towels seemed like a good idea.
