Vol. II prologue
Naruto walked reluctantly towards the large, looming gates of Konoha. He never thought that returning to his home would hurt, but it did. Even as he clutched the small bundle tightly to his chest, Sakura sleeping quietly, he felt an empty, painful place there. Sasuke had taken him within five miles of the walls, both of them wanting him to come further but knowing it would be foolish at best. Sasuke was a traitor to the village now, and Naruto knew the boy couldn't come back unless he was back for good. Still, as he stepped through those wooden doors he couldn't help the tears that gathered in his eyes before he blinked them back.
He was taken to Tsunade's office immediately, the blond woman demanding to know everything that had happened. She had paled a little at the sight of the small child that Naruto held, but one look into those curious green eyes and she understood, smiling softly as she held back her own tears. Naruto didn't tell he about Sasuke, or their time together, and while he knew this was probably also a foolish decision, he stuck to it. Naruto had always been truthful and open before, but those few months made him feel different, and selfish as it was he wanted them all for his own.
Tsunade had run a seemingly endless battery of tests on both him and Sakura, but she found nothing wrong with either. She had let Naruto go then, though not without informing him that he was relieved of his shinobi duties for at least a year to watch over the child full time. This had made something in Naruto's stomach twist a little, aware of the way he'd grown a bit soft through his pregnancy. Still, he vowed that he would train every day, and soon he'd be strong again, well enough that he could take the same missions he'd taken before.
The two of them had moved into a small house then, within the walls of the former Uchiha district. The land there had mostly been repurposed after Sasuke's defection, and only the main compound stood unused now, mostly through Naruto's own efforts. Tsunade had offered the large house to him several times before, and several more once he'd returned with the child, but he declined every time. It didn't feel right for him to live there on his own, and now the sight of it just made that empty place in his chest pulse with pain again. He lived with it though, the compound close enough to be seen from the small front yard of the house he had been given, for the sake of Sakura.
