Contrary to popular opinion, Kakashi Hatake was not always late.

The reputation for being late was a tremendous weapon. His enemies and students never expected him to be nearby watching them as they waited for him to show.

The three chunin did not notice another peddler sitting across the way from the ramen stand.

“Shit...Kakashi-sensei gave us a simple task. Get Keiko-san and bring her to the training yards. If she is not there in half an hour, he is going to be very unhappy.”

Yuhi Hotaka obviously woke up on the wrong side of the futon this morning.

A girl snapped, “If she doesn’t show, we just go back and tell Kakashi-sensei that she was not there. She is always getting into trouble. Let Kakashi-sensei deal with the brat.”

The other boy echoed the girl’s sentiments.

“No. Hatake-sensei is probably testing us right now. I would not put it past him to test us to see what we do when an operation goes south due to bad intelligence. We have to find her and bring her back. We have half an hour, maybe an hou, but we can’t assume. Meet me here in twenty-five minutes.”

The trio split up and started looking for the girl.

Just as they left, Keiko rolled off the roof and sat on the bench by the doorway.

Kakashi Hatake dispelled the jutsu that he used and walked up to his latest student. She noticed him, stood up, and bowed.

“Konichi wa, Kakashi-sensei.”

He looked her over. Keiko was a small, skinny thing. She had her mother’s face, but her father’s hair and eyes. However, he knew that she would be his greatest challenge as a teacher.

“What happened?”

“Those three what-ever’s started treating me like a servant when I did them a favor. I did not have to relay their orders to the kitchen. I apologize for any problems.”

“If they can’t find a genin who does not want to be found, they need more training if they ever want to became jonin. I am going to explain to you what is happening. Those three just came off a mission. Unfortunately their sensei is recovering from injuries so I have to baby-sit them through some B and A ranked missions for the next six moons. When their sensei recovers, they go back. You will remain with me. The Hokages, both of them, has given you the honor of watching chunin do such dangerous missions. You are to watch and learn, only. From time to time, you will be tasked with missions of your own. However, you will be paired with one of them.”

“What?”

“Team-work. No ninja ever goes out into the fray alone. Even your father was part of a team. A ninja only goes alone on a suicide mission and suicide missions are a waste. We have lost too many ninja when we were last attacked. I know that you worked alone during the academy training sessions. Unfortunately, you need a team mate even if it’s someone to stand guard as you get some sleep. When they return, say nothing of what I told you. Better yet come with me.”

Kakashi leapt unto the nearest roof and Keiko followed him.

“I am heading to the training grounds. I want you to follow me and don’t be seen by your three new teammates.”

“Hai, Kakashi-sensei...I will be there.”

As soon as the child opened her mouth, he was already on his way.

The three chunin did not find their missing team member.

No one could recall seeing Keiko the village scapegoat.

Takahashi Shika was fuming about the brat. Shika was not in line when the gods passed out patience. The girl wished that she knew a couple forbidden jutsu just so she could unleash it on the new genin.

Nakamura Fumio was upset that he did not get a chance to eat lunch.

The last one merely wondered what the consequence of failure was to be. Fuming now would only burn valuable energy.

“I see that the three of you can’t even locate a genin. Your justu might be perfect. Your fighting skills might be good enough to shame the collective talents of all the jonin in Konohakure. However, that means nothing if you cannot find your prey. If she wanted to, a genin, fresh out of the academy, could have killed you. Tell my why you lost her.”

There was only collective silence.

“Okay, you mission is to find your new genin friend. You will bring her to me. However, this mission has some rules. Keiko shall be like an adversary, but one we want to bring over to serve us. Pretend she is a high ranking enemy spy mistress who knows were all the bodies are buried and we really want those bodies. The rules are simple, you have to find her and convince her to come over willingly.

“This is the test that many who seek to be jonin fail. It’s not about justu anymore. It’s not how can beat how in a one on one fight. Rather, it’s how you apply your talents and assets. If you have to drag her here unwillingly, then you failed. Oh, one more thing, I told her to ignore any messages or commands for the duration of the exercise. Telling her that I want her to show up here will not work.”

“Any advice, sensei?”

“Just one, know what motivates the one you seek. Know her strengths and weaknesses. Know her fears and courage. Know her like a mother would her own child. Think like her. What was her life like? Now go. You have two weeks. Also, you are not to bother her mother or be within a mile of this place. Go.”

The three chunin quickly moved out.

Five minutes later, a slight figure was out from behind the trees.

“You heard the mission. I want you to play tough. I want them to grovel. Until they are honest with you...until they stop looking at you as a burden...do not budge even if it means they will fail.”

“As for you, it’s time to test your justu. I will try not to kill you, but I want you to give me everything you got.”

The young child bowed, He noticed as she tried to hide the fact that her hands were forming a new seal.
