Unrequited
Sasuke is trembling, but out of fear or anger he doesn’t know. Naruto sent him ten text-messages on his cell phone in two minutes, none of which he responds to. Five were psychological threats three were pleas for reconciliation and forgiveness, and two were bribes. Sasuke’s cell phone begins to ring. He quickly puts it on silent and runs to his parents. They ask what happened. “I never gave him my cell phone number,” Sasuke is half-hysterical. By the time Iruka and Kakashi have calmed Sasuke down, the home telephone begins to ring. “Don’t answer it!” he screams. “Sasuke, this is the fifth time I am asking you this and I expect an answer—what is going on!” Iruka is growing impatient but trying not to.
Sasuke explains everything.
“You had sex with him?!”
“You were HOW OLD!?”
“Why is he calling here?”
“He wants me back.” Sasuke knows how he is acting but he cannot help it. He’s terrified. Kakashi has his arm around Sasuke to try and calm him. Sasuke burrows into the embrace. “Sasuke, we both have work today. If you decide to stay here, don’t answer the phone. If you go out, hover around large crowds. We’ll go to the police—”
“No! Don’t!”
“Sasuke! Do not protect him!”
The house telephone has not stopped ringing.
Sasuke logs online for information, and the first thing that pops up on his laptop is the home page, with his e-mail. Naruto has sent him 43 e-mails in half an hour. Sasuke frantically goes onto his other e-mail site. Nothing from Naruto. Good. One from Neji, one from Gaara. He responds to those and worries.
He’s never been stalked before.
Iruka and Kakashi arrive home from work. They talk about what they need to do. Sasuke stubbornly refuses to go to the police, but he keeps records of everything over the weeks. He becomes edgy, mistrustful of everything, grouchy, uptight and bitchy. He can’t sleep and he doesn’t eat much. Night terrors plague his sleep. After two months, nothing has stopped. On the night that Kakashi and Iruka tell Sasuke they’ll be moving, Naruto’s e-mails total 237, phone calls at home 196 and recorded onto a CD for evidence, cell phone calls 186, with dates written down, voice-mails 186 with dates and content written, and text-messages 37. “We’re moving to Seattle. Start packing.” Sasuke waits until he is in his room to cry and rage. The stars outside twinkle with the knowledge of this unrequited love affair.
