Reckless Hearts

 Chapter Eight

“Dobe, I’m engaged.”

The minute those words came out of Sasuke’s mouth, his entire world came crashing down around him. He could feel his heart shattering into a million little pieces, like delicate porcelain.

En-Engaged?” Naruto choked out, his eyes widening and his breathing getting shallow. The arms around his waist tightened, trapping him there. The action was meant to comfort him, but he just felt guilty and nauseous.

He forcibly elbowed Sasuke in the stomach and broke free of his embrace, scrambling to the floor so he could find his pants. His hands were trembling so much that he couldn’t get them on, but somehow he’d managed.

“Naruto, let me explain.” Sasuke sighed, exasperated, a hand rubbing over his stomach where Naruto had elbowed him.

“No. Y-You need to leave.” Naruto said shakily, turning so his back was to Sasuke. He didn’t want to see him cry over this.

He heard the bed creak, and then there were soft footsteps as Sasuke came up behind him. The man was standing so close to him, he could feel his lying, bastard breath on the back of his neck.

“You should have left me alone that night, Sasuke. If you all ready had someone, then-“ Naruto cut him self off with a slightly hysterical laugh and shoved at the hands on his waist. He’d never been so heartbroken and angry before. He didn’t know what to do next.

“Can we just talk about this?” Sasuke bit out, grabbing Naruto’s shoulders and spinning him around. The blonde swung at him blindly, satisfied when he heard a startled hiss from the man. “Fuck, Naruto, would you just calm down and listen to me?” The raven demanded.

Naruto gaped at him.

“Calm down? You want me to calm down?! I don’t have to do shit! You-“ Naruto cut himself off again, this time with a disbelieving laugh. He spun around and glared up at the man he thought he loved and felt disgusted. “After telling me something like that, you don’t deserve anything.” He snarled defiantly.

Sasuke’s eyes narrowed at him dangerously, and he made a frustrated sound in the back of his throat.

My lie can’t get you arrested.” The raven shot back, daring Naruto to question his logic. The blonde just growled at him. “But then again, I never lied to you about anything. You just assumed things on your own, usuratonkachi.”

Naruto went read in the face and white-hot raged welled up in him. Sasuke smirked at him; that annoying, smug smirk the boy hated. He swung his fist again, this time catching the stupid prick in the lower jaw. The sickening crack was worth the pain he felt in his hand afterwards.

“Who the fuck do you think you are, playing mind games like that?! I’m only sixteen, asshole! Did it ever cross your mind that I might take you seriously?!” Naruto screamed tat him, not bothering to keep his voice down.

He snarled, shoving at Sasuke’s shoulders and ignoring the man’s narrowed look when he saw Naruto’s face up close. Naruto didn’t give a shit. He just wanted to hurt Sasuke as much as he was hurting right now.

“How could you fuck with my feelings like that? And what about your fiancée? Do you even like her?” Naruto ground out, shoving Sasuke down onto the bed. The man just sat there and stared at him, like he didn’t understand the words coming out of Naruto’s mouth. “Cat got your tongue, bastard? You have nothing to say to defend yourself?

Sasuke didn’t say anything. He just watched silently as Naruto got angrier and angrier.

Naruto went to punch him again, but the older man caught his wrist and yanked him forward. Naruto ended up sprawled over the bed with the raven holding him down.

Sasuke leaned down and brushed a chaste kiss over his lips, almost in apology. Naruto’s eyes welled up with tears and Sasuke just kissed them away so easily. He didn’t want to be comforted. He just wanted to kick Sasuke in the nuts and push him off the roof of the house.

“Why would you do this to me?” Naruto whispered not bothering to fight the gentle pressure of Sasuke’s lips on his. The feeling itself made butterflies jitter around in his stomach, but he didn’t want it to.

The second Sasuke’s tongue slipped into his mouth, he bit down on the wet muscle and gripped a generous handful of that dark hair. He yanked until Sasuke finally pulled away and wiped at his mouth.

“Are you some kind of girl? Idiot!” Sasuke hissed out, shoving Naruto back down against the bed when he tried to get up.

“Let me up, asshole!” Naruto snapped, struggling in the raven’s grip but not really getting anywhere. He clawed at the arms holding him down, and squirmed as much as he could manage.

All of a sudden, Sasuke was off of him, and there was the sound of scuffling on the floor next to him. The raven was struggling with his father, and Iruka was behind him, helping him to sit up.

“I thought you weren’t coming back, Uchiha.” Kakashi growled out dangerously. He sounded so pissed that Naruto was afraid to say he’d let Sasuke in.

“You’re bleeding!” Iruka whispered in horror, reaching for the first thing he could find on the floor-which happened to be Sasuke’s shirt-and pressing it to Naruto’s chin.

It took Naruto a moment to realize that the blood wasn’t him. Apparently he’d bitten Sasuke harder than he thought.

Naruto’s eyes fell to the floor, where Sasuke was bent over his own knees with Kakashi’s hand on the back of his neck, holding him in place. Even in the dark, he could see the thin trail of blood running down Sasuke’s chin.

He hadn’t expected things to turn out like this. He’d had hopes for the future of them being together again. After tonight, he didn’t think that would happen.

Kakashi pulled Sasuke to his feet with some difficulty, and forced the man to stand against the wall.

“I don’t know what’s going on, but it stops now.” Kakashi said lowly, glancing quickly at Naruto before glaring heatedly at Sasuke. It was like the silver haired man was blaming him for everything that had happened, even though technically, Naruto had started it all from the beginning. Going to the bar that night and letting Sasuke take him upstairs had been his fault. “I want you out of this house. NOW. And after that, I don’t want to see you around my son again.” His father threatened.

Sasuke looked like he was fighting not to say something he’d regret, but he wisely kept his mouth shut.

After wiping all of the blood of Naruto’s chin, Iruka returned Sasuke’s shirt, and grabbed his shoes from under the bed. He set them in Sasuke’s arms, on top of his shirt, and then gave him a curt nod.

Naruto watched the raven as he put his shirt on, and up until all that was left was to say goodbye. There were a lot of things left unsaid, hanging in the air between them, but Kakashi was all ready pushing at Sasuke’s shoulders. He forced the man from the room, all the while whispering things that the blonde couldn’t hear.

Sasuke abruptly glanced back at him, opening his mouth to say God knows what. Naruto just looked away, blushing so hotly that it made him dizzy.

“Keep walking.” Kakashi said gruffly form the doorway. There was a grunt as he shoved Sasuke through it, and then their footsteps were fading away down the hall.

“What exactly happened?” Iruka asked, taking in Naruto’s ruffled appearance. The blonde knew he looked horrible-mused hair, red marks and suspicious stains on his skin, puffy eyes-but he didn’t think Iruka cared how he looked. “Naruto, did he tell you about Karin-chan?” The brunette asked quietly, reaching out a hand to smooth Naruto’s hair down.

Naruto’s eyes widened painfully and he stared at Iruka with a disbelieving look.

“You knew this whole time and you didn’t tell me?” He exclaimed, almost snarling at the man as he jumped off his bed and started to pace the length of his bedroom floor. His head was filled with vicious thoughts of betrayal and it was pissing him off. “Why the hell didn’t you tell me months ago?! You know, before I fell in love with him?!” Naruto stomped his foot in frustration, anger making him see nothing but red.

Iruka just looked away guiltily, unshed tears prickling at the corners of his eyes.

“Why the hell didn’t you stop me when you caught us that night?” The blonde whispered, reaching up to wipe away his stubborn tears.

Iruka stepped forward and touched his shoulder hesitantly.

“You were happy and I didn’t want to ruin that.” He said helplessly, a single tear making its way down his cheek. He wiped it away quickly and gave Naruto a half-hearted smile. “You’re my son and that’s all I want. No matter how much trouble you gave us, it’s all we want for you.” The man sighed, gripping Naruto’s shoulders and pulling him into an awkward embrace.

Even if he was still angry that Iruka had never told him, he realized that he’d been craving this since Sasuke confessed to him.

A sob worked its way up his throat, against his will. When Iruka only held him tighter, he finally broke down.

*~*

When he came to it was all ready morning, and there were kids playing outside. One look at the clock told him that it was too late to go to school, seeing as it was three in the afternoon. It was a good thing, too, because he had a splitting headache.

That’s what usually happened to a person when they cried themselves to sleep, and then halfway through the day when they woke up again.

Naruto scratched at his belly with one hand, freezing when he felt the left over evidence of last night. He still couldn’t believe Sasuke had a fucking fiancée somewhere.

If he had hated the chick enough to cheat on her, then why the hell were they engaged?

“Fuck it.” Naruto mumbled, scowling as he pulled himself out of bed and into the bathroom so he could do his business. He refrained from looking into the mirror, because he knew what he would see if he did.

A broken hearted little boy.

Naruto finished up in the bathroom and then made his way downstairs to find something to eat. The house was eerily quiet, almost like he was the only person living there. He wasn’t alone anymore, so he knew better.

“Oh, you’re finally up.”

“Holy shit!” Naruto jumped at the sound of the feminine voice, and turned to glare at the pink haired girl in the kitchen doorway. She smiled at him bit he could tell it was somewhat strained.

“Iruka-san called me this morning and told me to come over after school. Are you sick?” She asked innocently, coming up to him and pressing a palm to his forehead.

It was such an innocent question, but it hurt to think about the reason he’d stayed home.

“I take it he finally told you.” This time Kiba was in the doorway, a large bruise blossoming high on his right cheek. Naruto raised an eyebrow at Sakura, who only winked at him. Then his brain caught up with what Kiba actually said.

“You fucking knew, too?” The blonde growled out, taking a sudden step towards the brunette. Sakura immediately wedged herself between them. “Why the hell didn’t anyone tell me?” He demanded, hoping that he wasn’t the last to know.

“Yeah, I’ve known since the beginning. That’s why I hated that asshole so much.” Kiba snapped, irritated, as he looked off to the side. Naruto was floored for a few seconds, but at least some of Kiba’s recent behavior made sense.

“You called me a fag, Kiba. How can I just get over that?” Naruto sighed as he sank into one of the kitchen chairs. Sakura took a seat next to him, while the dog lover remained in the doorway.

“I didn’t mean it.” Kiba frowned at him.

“Yes you fucking did, or you wouldn’t have said it.” Naruto grumbled, leaning forward so he could lay his head on the table. Sakura ran a hand through his hair and Kiba finally joined then at the table, sitting across from Sakura.

“I was pissed at Uchiha, okay? I didn’t mean to take it out on you.” Kiba muttered, as he ran his fingers over the dark bruise on his cheek. Naruto smirked at Sakura and the girl smiled back. “Look, man. I honestly don’t care about who you date. Just knowing about this guy’s situation, especially since he never told you, just made me so angry. And you were so fucking obsessed with him…” Kiba trailed off, growling lightly.

“After you told me about Sasuke-kun, I was sick to my stomach. I couldn’t wrap my brain around it.” Sakura mumbled to herself, her fingers still winding through Naruto’s hair. Kiba rubbed at the bruise on his cheek again and the girl frowned for a moment. “You deserved that punch, though.” She snapped.

“Ah, I know.” Kiba moaned, his head hitting the table with a thunk. Sakura giggled lightly and reached over to flick him in the ear. “I fucked up, okay? I’ll do any thing to make it up to you, blondie. Just give me a chance.” The boy mumbled pathetically.

Naruto snorted and scratched at his chin, evil plots all ready forming in his brain. There were a million and one things he could make Kiba do, but he knew his heart just wouldn’t be in it right now.

“What am I supposed to do now?” He asked instead, sniffling noisily as a few tears broke free of his eyes. Sakura wiped them away with her thumb and kissed his forehead.

Kiba muttered something unintelligible under his breath and jumped back up from the kitchen chair like his ass had caught fire.

“Well, right now you can eat some ramen, and then you can do the homework Sakura and I brought for you. After that, you can do whatever you want.” The brunette grinned, setting a bowl of ramen in front of Naruto. The boy sat up and accepted the chopsticks his friend gave him, muttering a soft think you under his breath.

With friends like them, he didn’t even need Uchiha Sasuke.

*~*

Sleep, unfortunately, didn’t come easy that night. Naruto spent most of his time staring up at the ceiling, wondering what he’d done wrong to deserve this. Was God really this cruel, or was there something more sinister at work, because having a broken heart hurt.

He never even thought he’d feel this way, because no one had ever given him the time of day. He missed Sasuke so much that he couldn’t close his eyes without seeing the man’s face or replay the last time they were together.

Being in love with that jackass was slowly killing him, and it had only been two days since that incident. How long would he have to suffer before the feelings were gone?

He was started out of his reverie by the sound of his phone vibrating on his nightstand. His heart lodged itself into his throat as he picked it up and turned it around to reach the called ID.

Uchiha, Sasuke flashed back at him mockingly.

He tossed the phone across the room with an angry hiss, then rolled onto his side and curled up into a ball. The phone kept buzzing where it had landed.

The blonde closed his eyes and tried to go to sleep, but all he could see were Sasuke’s lips as the bastard smirked at him.

It was starting to look like he wasn’t going to get over this.
