Chapter Nine
“What do you fear beautiful?” Kakashi murmured, “I would ease your worries if I can.”
“Will you stay with me senpai?” Itachi asked quietly, diverting the conversation from the pointed question, “I do not wish to be alone.”
“Of course I'll stay with you.” the copy-nin promised, “As long as you want me to.”
“And what of your husband? Morino-san doesn't strike me as a patient man.”, blind eyes unerringly sought the older nin's face in an eerie display of his power.
“It's Hatake now.” Kakashi retorted sharply, “And he's my husband, not my owner . . . Ibiki is surprisingly patient, as well as very kind. He's also very much in love with me, and I with him. He knows I'm coming back.”
“It must be nice to have someone.” Itachi whispered sadly, “I grow very lonely at times.”
“You have Kisame.” the silver-haired man reminded him, “He's very protective . . . although perhaps not as demonstrative as you might wish.”
“Our relationship is . . . complicated.” the Otokage admitted. “Although we've been together for years, I fear we lack any sort of true connection. Lately I feel he's staying out of some misguided sense of duty. He has become restless remaining in one place for so long with no enemies to battle.”
“Would you have him leave you then?” the copy-nin asked curiously, head tilting to the side like a quizzical puppy.
“No.” the last Uchiha replied slowly, pursing his lips in thought before continuing, “I wish to know where he goes when he leaves this place. Who he sees, in particular.”
“You want me to spy on Kisame?” Kakashi croaked disbelievingly.
“Not spy, exactly.” Itachi wheedled, “I just wish to know who it is that he finds so fascinating.”
“I don't need to spy on him to find out 'tachi . . . I hope you don't mind, but I brought this same topic up with Kisame while I was staying here. I foolishly tried to get him to join us, thinking it might heal the breech between the two of you. He rejected me without even giving my proposal a second thought. He apparently already has a lover, someone who accepts, and even relishes in, the more brutal parts of his nature, parts of himself he doesn't want you to see.” The copy-nin explained cautiously, “The last thing he wants is to hurt you, that's why he turns his desires elsewhere.”
“I didn't ask to be coddled.” the Otokage snapped viciously, “I'm not exactly pure as the driven snow . . . I killed my entire clan, after all.”
“Because Sandaime-san abused you.” the silver-haired man pressed, “You don't honestly believe that you deserve more mistreatment, do you?”
“I believe what I deserve is the truth.” the Uchiha retorted decisively, “I may be blind but I'm not stupid. Pretending the situation doesn't exist isn't doing either of us any good. Kisame is angry, the fact that he's upset about my arrangement with you I certainly understand, but now he's taking it out on me as well. That hardly seems fair now, does it. After all, I don't cast recriminations his way just because he chose to take a lover . . . and he did so long before I ever even considered it, I might add.”
“Settle down 'tachi.” the copy-nin urged with a chuckle, “There's no point in getting yourself upset. If you really wish to know who Kisame is seeing of course I'll find out.” The jounin paused as the door opened and an obviously pregnant woman waddled in.
“You wished to see me Otokage-sama?” the woman inquired politely as she made an awkward bow.
“This is the baby's father, Hatake Kakashi-sama.” Itachi explained, “I thought he might like to meet you.”
“I'm honored sir.” the woman said softly, “My name's Suki. Would you like to feel your baby kick?”
“Go on senpai.” the Uchiha urged with a smile, “You know you want to.”
Kakashi tentatively pressed his hand against Suki's swollen midsection, leaping back in alarm when the flesh under his hand jumped. “He's very strong already.” the silver-haired nin murmured in a pleased tone of voice, “I can't wait to meet you little one.” he crooned soothingly, “I am going to teach you so many wonderful things.”
“You like babies Hatake-san?” the surrogate asked in surprise, “Not many men do . . . especially shinobi.”
“Senpai is a most unusual person.” the Otokage informed her, “He's been voluntarily watching a set of twins almost every day since they were born, if you can believe it.”
“I like babies.” the copy-nin admitted reluctantly, “So what? It's not like it hurts anyone.” He straightened up, casting an injured, pouty look in the Uchiha's direction, “As much as I'm enjoying 'make fun of Kakashi' time, I should get going if I'm going to be successful in my mission Otokage-sama.”
“I didn't mean you had to do it now.” Itachi declared with a shrug, “But if you're in a hurry to get out of here . . .”
“That's not what I said.” the silver-haired man replied crossly, “I just want to get this over with. If I tail Kisame now, then I'll have more time to wipe the memory from my mind.”
“Go then.” the Otokage declared wearily, “Try to hurry back though, I do not wish to be alone.”
“Suki, will you stay with him until I return?” Kakashi inquired seriously, “I shouldn't be very long.”
“Of course, Hatake-san.” the pregnant woman replied immediately, “I will be honored to keep Uchiha-sama company. The copy-nin gracefully unfurled himself, rising to his toes and stretching before heading lazily toward the door. Halfway there he stopped and swayed ominously, squeezing his eyes shut in hopes of settling the roiling mass in his stomach. He waited a long moment, and then another, before abandoning his plans and running for the toilet.
“Senpai, perhaps you should wait for another day.” the Otokage called worriedly, “That's the second time you've gotten sick since you arrived.”
Itachi waited anxiously for a response, but none was forthcoming. “Suki, could you go check on him, please.” the dark-haired man asked urgently.
“Hatake-san, are you alright?” the surrogate called as she slowly pushed the bathroom door open. “He's unconscious,” she called to the worried Uchiha, “I think we need a doctor.”
Five minutes later a medical squad burst through the door and into the room. “What is the matter Otokage-sama?” the medic called frantically, “Where are you?”
“We're in the bathroom.” the dark-haired man replied, “Hurry please.”
The emergency team raced into the bathroom where Itachi and Suki were bent over the copy-nin, trying to revive him. “Stand back please, give us some room to work.” the doctor entreated as he opened the pale man's shirt and checked his heart and lungs, finally breaking a capsule under Kakashi's nose and waving it back and forth. “Sir, do you know where you are?” the medic asked when mismatched eyes finally cracked open to peer around hazily.
“Floor.” the silver-haired ninja muttered, before turning his head and vomiting yet again.
“Your blood pressure is alarmingly high.” the doctor continued, “Have you taken any medication?”
“No, I stopped my meds because I've had the flu . . . my doctor said it would be alright.” the copy-nin explained groggily, “I've been kind of queasy the last couple of days.”
“We're going to move you to the hospital now.” the medic explained soothingly, “See if we can figure out what's bothering you.”
“No hospital.” Kakashi insisted, “It's just a stomach virus, I'll be fine.”
“Senpai, you're most certainly not fine.” Itachi scolded, “You need to take care of yourself.”
“I came here to visit you, not spend time in the hospital.” the silver-haired man replied mulishly, “I just need rest and fluids, really.”
“I believe you need more than that.” the doctor insisted, “The high blood pressure, in particular, can be very serious. Do you have any underlying medical conditions? Diabetes, heart disease, kidney problems?”
“I lost a kidney a while back.” the pale shinobi admitted, “It hasn't caused me any problems though.”
“We really need to run some tests.” the worried medic urged, “Just a day or two and you'll be right back here.”
“No.” the copy-nin stated, “Whatever you need to test, do it now and then let me rest, please. I'm sure I'll feel fine in the morning.”
“Otokage-sama, do you wish us to move your guest to the hospital by force?” the doctor inquired, “It really would be the wisest course of action.”
“Can you do the tests he needs here?” Itachi prodded, “If so, please just do that. Senpai won't be happy in the hospital . . . if we need you I'll just call.”
Kakashi managed a weak smile for the Uchiha, he really did hate hospitals. In a matter of minutes the doctor had drawn blood, collected a urine specimen, and had the silver-haired man comfortably tucked into bed. The Otokage settled next to the lanky nin, tenderly ruffling thick steely locks in an attempt to soothe the jounin into sleep. “Just relax senpai, I'll see the doctors out and then come join you.” the dark-haired nin whispered before silently shooing everyone out of the room.
Five minutes later Itachi slid into bed next to the dozing copy-nin, carefully curling up next to the sleeping figure and nestling his head on a broad pale chest, eventually falling asleep to the comfortable rhythm of Kakashi's heartbeat.
“What do you fear beautiful?” Kakashi murmured, “I would ease your worries if I can.”
“Will you stay with me senpai?” Itachi asked quietly, diverting the conversation from the pointed question, “I do not wish to be alone.”
