CHAPTER 1
You want us to do WHAT?!?!?
*all in the name of good relations*
Tsunade observed Team 7. She knew that they could tell by her apologetic face that what she was going to say, wouldn’t make any of them happy. She grimaced inwardly as she felt the carefree Naruto smile spread across her face. ‘God their going to kill me.’ She thought as the smile grew to beyond idiotic proportions. After regarding the four people for a moment longer, Tsunade took a deep breath and released it slowly.
“You are all probably wondering as to why I asked you here,” a small pause. “are you not?” She watched as she saw four heads nod in very different ways. Another deep breath. “I have decided that our village and the Sand village should try to become closer. I have spoken with their “at the moment” Kazkage, and we’ve agreed that this would be a good idea.”
“What is this idea?” Kakashi asked breaking his silence.
Another big smile. “Well,” ‘Just come out and say it!’ her mind scolded her. “We have decided an exchange of sorts.” ‘Four raised eyebrows … good, good, no killing yet.’ she thought optimistically “For the next year you three” indicating to the youths. “will be living with the Sand family. Six months there, six months here.”
“Who is …” started Sasuke.
“The Sand …” Sakura spoke slowly.
“Family …?” Naruto finished.
“THE, Sand family.” ‘Might as well spell it out for them.’ “You three will be living with, Temari, Kankuro, and Gaara for the next year of your lives.”
TWITCH.
Tsunade didn’t actually know that twitching could make a sound., at least an audible one. But sure enough it did, very, very clearly. She sat back as she heard Naruto lunge into all the reasons why he thought that this was a bad idea. The words Ramen, and Training coming up most often. Soon enough Sakura was also raising some good questions, questions that Tsunade wouldn’t care to listen to, knowing that no matter what was asked, this was still going to happen. The only one that seemed to be relaxed was Kakashi. She interlaced her fingers as she rested her elbows on the table top. She would wait this ranting out, then, and only then would she speak.
Fifteen minutes later.
“Is everybody good now?” surveying the three of them, all of which not making a single sound. “Good.” she emphasized with a nod of her head. “You three will be leaving for the Hidden in the Sand Village on Friday. That gives you three whole days to pack and to get your affairs in order. I know I don’t have to remind you how important this mission is to everybody. And I’m sure I don’t have to remind you about how upset I would get at you three if I hear that your not being the best Kohona Ninja’s ever.” another small pause. “Dismissed.”
Sakura was walking along at a slow pace, along side Naruto and Sasuke. Both boys also seemed stunned by the news. ’Awww, what did we do to deserve this?’ Inner Sakura asked loudly while shaking a fist. ’We’re going to get sand EVERYWHERE!’
“…en we were younger.” Naruto finished.
“Eh?” Sakura sounded, not having heard her companions sentence.
“I said, we would never have had to do this type of mission when we were younger.” he repeated obediently. “Now that we’re seventeen she thinks that she can boss us around.”
“Dobe.” Sasuke smiled as he crossed his arms over his chest. “We’re going to have to do it, no matter what, so we might as well make the best of it.”
“Nnnmmmm.” Naruto grumped as he stuck his tongue out at Sasuke.
“I’ll see you guys in a few days.” Sasuke said as he took his turn to head home.
“Bye Sasuke.” Sakura called while waving. The motion, though the same as it was when she was young, was entirely different in it’s execution. Only holding the emotions of friendship and not want and high expectations. ’Feels good.’ She thought to herself as she and Naruto kept walking.
“I wonder why she chose us.” Naruto wondered aloud.
“Maybe …” Sakura started, as she rubbed the bridge of her nose. “because everybody knows that you are Gaara share some of the same past, and that you were healthy for him?” a broad smile. “And also seeing that since you came back, you’ve been his pen pal? How many people can say that?”
Naruto stuck his tongue out at her cutely. “Sakura, you are really smart.”
“Well that was worded oddly …” furrows brow. “but thanks.” Looks up. “Hey this is my stop. I’ll see you at the front gates in a few days okay.” Runs off waving. “Bye Naruto!”
“Bye Sakura!” He called as he kept walking. ’Hmmm, living with them … I wonder if they do things weird? I wonder if they eat Ramen? Do they know what Ramen is? Did they eat any Ramen when they were here for the Chunin Exams all those years ago?’ Slowly but surly Naruto trudged himself home, worrying about the proper way to present Ramen in the Sand Village.
* * *
Temari looked at her Kazkage with a look that almost made him believe that he had sprouted wings from his ears and that his face had turned into a full ass. Her stance was strong and ridged, but her eyes held uncontrolled bewilderment and awe. He knew that she heard him right, but was right now trying to make herself believe that he hadn’t just said what he said. But sadly that wasn’t going to be happening.
“You want me …” she began, looking at him. “You want me to go home and tell my younger brothers …” tilts head slightly at the Kazkage, waiting for him to say that this is all a very unfunny joke. “To go home and tell them that we’re going to be having three guests for six months?”
“Yes.” The Kazkage said calmly as he leaned against his desk.
“And in that group of people who are coming to live here … with us,” spoken in a strained tone. “two tried to kill Gaara.” Temari surveyed the man before her.
“We had gotten word that your brother was doing a lot better thanks to that battle with Uzumaki Naruto.” The Kazkage said strongly. “I’m sure you six will get along fine.”
“But.”
“Dismissed.”
Sigh. Temari began to turn towards the door. “If this blows up in my face.” looking over her shoulder at him. “I will hold you responsible and I will kill you.”
“I look forward to it.” The Kazkage said irritably, as he watched her storm out. ’I hope this works out.’ he thought as he stared at the door. ’Both of our villages will prosper even more if we can fully trust each other. A small smile. ‘Leave it to children to work out the problems of adults.’
Kankuro and Gaara regarded their older sister as she walked into their home. She had a deadpan look to her face. Both knew just to wait, neither of them really wanting to know what the Kazkage had to say. After a few minutes that felt like hours to the impatient Kankuro he walked over to where his sister had settled down on the couch.
“Well what is it?” Kankuro asked loud enough to rouse his sister from her inner musings. “What did the Kazkage have to say.”
“People are moving in, to live with us.” looks at him. “We will be living with them for a full year …” looks over to her little brother standing in the corner. “six months here, six months there…”
“Who people?! And where is there?” Kankuro demanded as he shook his sisters shoulder hard enough to fully bring her back into reality.
“WHO.” a small disjointed laugh. “Uzumaki Naruto, Uchicha Sasuke, and Haruno Sakura! That’s who! Oh and THERE, there’s Kohona.”
A long silence fell between the three siblings. None of them moved or made a sound. Gaara himself was quite shocked by the news, but somewhere between his mind being shocked and his body actually feeling the emotion it got muddled into annoyance.
Kankuro didn’t know what to say. ’Their coming to live with us? We have to live with them for a year?’ Kankuro went to say something but all that he achieved was to open his mouth with no sound coming out.
Suddenly Temari started moving, so suddenly that it startled both boys, but visibly only one. They watched for a minute as she started moving things and started busying herself with household chores.
“What are you …” Kankuro started as he watched his sister’s unfamiliar and alien looking movements.
“Cleaning, what the hell does it look like I’m doing?” She snapped. “Kankuro grab the vacuum, and Gaara grab the feather duster.”
Kankuro shot a look at his little brother to see what he was going to do. Gaara didn’t move. ’Just like me.’ he thought as he smiled at the younger male, slight pride entering his inner voice.
“NOW!” Temari called so sharply that both boys quickly moved to do what they were told. “Gaara put your gourd in your room! You don’t need it!” She snapped as she looked at him. She saw the face he gave her. His eyes were slightly narrowed and his lips formed a tight thin line. “NOW GAARA!” suddenly his unimpressed, ’I’ll murder you’ face was gone as he ran up the stairs to put his gourd away. ’I’ll pay for that later.’ she thought unimpressed with herself. ’We have three days before they even start coming.’ she thought as she started to straighten up some knickknacks. ’but sand is everywhere.’
“Take it easy Temari.” Kankuro soothed as he placed a reassuring hand on his sisters shoulder. “It’ll be okay.”
She sighed and relaxed around his hand. “Mmmm.” she sounded as she leaned up against her brother, her arms tucked against his chest, as her forehead rested against his collar bone. She felt him sigh deeply as he placed his arms around her in an amusing hug. Even though the three of them had gotten closer, that was more of a mental closeness. They weren’t ones that would hug or touch really. Neither of them had ever hugged each other, and they had never hugged Gaara. ’The three of us grew up in a hugless world.’ Temari smiled, her inner voice having said the sentence in an amusing way. Slowly she drew away from her brother by stretching out her arms. “I’m sorry.” she said solemnly.
“It’s okay.” Kankuro said as he drew her into a real hug.
“I’m sorry Gaara.” she said as she dislodged herself from Kankuro and approached her little brother. ‘Little my ass.’ she thought ruefully. ‘He’s five inches taller than me, and I’m twenty.’
Gaara could feel his brow tighten in non understanding. He watched as his sister raised her hands, but paused. He stood still as she placed her hands on his shoulders and leaned him down a bit, then hugged him. Gaara wasn’t used to contact, let alone kind soft contact. He didn’t know what to do, and looked to his brother with not understanding eyes. He watched as his brother barrelled out his arms and let them sink down to what looked like a resting position. Gaara imitated what his brother did, bringing his arms around underneath Temari’s. He was going to do exactly what his brother had shown, when his body seemed to take over and apparently it knew what to do. His left arm snaked around her waist bringing her body against his and his right bent at the elbow, and laid against her spine, pressing her closer still. Then unexpectedly he squeezed her gently, making her do the same to him. The contact seemed to last forever, it was almost dizzying. And when it ended, he almost didn’t want it to, he liked the warmth and the safety that had created.
Temari stepped back and regarded her little brother with a smile. ’Maybe people coming to visit will be good for more than just uniting the villages.’ smile broadened as she looked at Kankuro. ’Maybe, this wont be so bad.’ “Alright lets get back to work.”
