Downward Spiral
Prologue
The man was quite bald on top of his head and what hair left around the sides was rather sparse and white. Over the years, his skin had gained a parched sallowness to it and his cheeks sunken by age. The face now held little of the aristocratic elegance it once possessed, for most part of it was lost after ravages of life’s battles and losses.
He was the disciple of the second Hokage, the teammate of the third and had outlived both of them. Currently as the highest elder in the council of Konoha, his authority was above all except Tsunade.
With his chin propped on his hand, he fell into long pensiveness. Konoha was prospering now after surviving tough wartime with Sound. Endless missions rolled in as county lords and potential clients grew more confident in Konoha’s strength, bringing in bountiful of revenues. Peace reigned again after Uchiha Sasuke slayed Orochimaru two years ago and the Anbu subsequently annihilated most of Sound legion but still a constant threat loomed in the distance as long as Kyuubi continued to reside within the borders of Hidden Leaf.
Foolish Tsunade and Jiraya! To think that any demon can amount to anything significant! A Hokage? He snorted at that unrealistic and an entirely foolish dream. Uzumaki Naruto will never become one as long as he, Sato Homura remained alive.
Anyone can become a Hokage, anyone except him. His very existence was an abomination of nature they should eradicate and a disgrace they should conceal forever, not because he was a demon vessel but because he was a freak and a murderer, who killed his…
A metallic clunk echoed through the room. Slightly startled, Homura’s head turned towards the door as it swung open. A man in jounin attire whose face is covered with bandage saved for a pair of cold, calculating eyes entered. The newcomer’s gaze met Homura’s for a second before he bowed respectfully to the elder sitting in front of a desk scattered with various mission briefs and reports.
“Homura-sama. I had followed Uzumaki Naruto for these past weeks under your orders and here are the results of the investigation.”
He placed an envelope on the table, as if afraid of the material inside and watched as Homura grabbed it and tossed the contents out onto the table. Numerous photographs of the Kyuubi vessel accosted him. His eyebrows knitted together as his face clouded.
He could recognise that bright blonde hair and those obnoxious twinkling blue eyes anywhere. They all belonged to the Fourth. The present Uzumaki Naruto had grown to become an almost exact replica of the Yondaime. Almost. Suddenly his breath caught in his throat as his eyes wandered to the sunny lopsided grin and then the whole face again.
There it was! The shape of the face and the high forehead partially hidden by the unruly hair reminded him bitterly of someone else. The brat did not inherit the long, straight nose or the fine bone from the Yondaime. They belonged to another, one who also wore the same trademark grin. He gave a bitter laugh as his heart clenched and his blood boiled with rage.
How dare Uzumaki Naruto who destroyed him bear his features? How could a monster taint those very features! How dare him! Naruto and Arashi! They robbed everything precious to him. They stirred only troubles after troubles.
First, with Orochimaru defecting and severing ties with Konoha after Arashi was appointed the Hokage, resulting in their powerful senin becoming enemy overnight. Sarutobi was a fool! After all these years, he still couldn’t believe his teammate’s folly to make Arashi the Hokage. Then Arashi just had to seal Kyuubi who became a target for the Akatsuki which may attack Konoha any moment. This pair of father and son had brought nothing but misfortunes and woes for Konoha.
He clenched his fists as he steadied himself against the slight tremor that shook his body as a frosty malicious smile nested on his face.
Soon he would make sure Uzumaki Naruto is obliterated, just like how Kyuubi had come along and wonderfully disposed his father. And once, with Kyuubi gone, Akatsuki would leave Konoha alone. Peace for Konoha again and peace of mind for him. Perhaps then, he could consider retiring.
He looked up and glared at the waiting man.
“So what is the latest news at the borders?”
“Although the squads led by Uzumaki and Hyuga Neji had successfully eliminated much of Orochimaru’s forces, there were always constant turmoil at our borders after his death but they amounted to little threat.”
“However, about three months ago, Yukushi Kabuto had managed to gather the remnants of the Sound nins and coalesced with two Akatsuki members to raise an army of considerable strength at South border of Fire country. Several jounins and chuunins have been missing while on missions in that area and nobody knows if they are dead or alive.”
The man spoke quietly, in the subdued tone of somebody who was not anxious to be overheard. There was urgency in his voice which was unmistakable.
“They have been lying quiet all this time and their plans and motives unknown. Even Tsunade-sama has not heard of this yet.”
That was the best news he had heard for a long time. The chance at killing Uzumaki had just been tossed to him in his face. Perfect. This time without fail, both Kyuubi and Uzumaki Naruto can disappear from the face of earth together.
“Tell me. Is Itachi one of them?”
“No, sir but they’re still S-class missing-nins with abilities far from inferior to Itachi’s.”
“Of course, we shouldn’t underestimate them. We will send in a team of three Anbus to check out the situation and remove the leaders.”
“Just three? It would be an absolutely suicidal mission,” The man questioned dubiously.
“As long as Kabuto and the missing-nins fall, the whole army will be nothing but scattered bunch of rebels. Choose two willing Anbus to stand-by for mission.”
“What about the third?”
“The third one will definitely be Uzumaki Naruto,” Homura said without hesitation.
“Hide this from Tsunade until the outcome of the mission is known. Understand?”
“But Uzumaki Naruto would never agree to such a mission especially not one without Godaime’s knowledge and authorisation!”
“I’m the elder of the council. He will not say no to me! Now leave.”
When the jounin exited, Homura studied the photos spread over the table carefully and picked up one. It was a photo that pictured a laughing Naruto, arm thrown carelessly around Sasuke’s shouders. Homura’s sharp scrutiny did not miss the small smile set on Sasuke’s normally impassive face or the inconspicuous arm hooked around Naruto’s waist possessively.
So that’s the reason the traitor returned to Konoha. He laughed again. Luck was certainly with him. He had just found the key for his plan to succeed.
‘Of course, he will not say no to me. Not when he is broken and desperate.’
He would just need to break Naruto slowly like what he had always done. A gentle reminder to that brat what he really was. A good-for-nothing demon should remember his place. Perhaps his words may do the trick and finally push him over the edge of sanity. And of course, he must remember not to squash that demon’s hope of being acknowledged one day. Acknowledged as Hokage? He sneered in distain.
Every move was conspired to lead Uzumaki closer to his doom.
Komaru was certain Uzumaki Naruto would not say no. He would make sure Uzumaki accept the mission and then die a horribly and painfully death. But in case the rascal did survive, backup plans are always there to ensure that he will never make it home.
And yes, the first move to send him to his demise will take in the form of Uchiha Sasuke. Another gritty laugh escaped from his throat.
‘It’s time to remind the last Uchiha on his responsibility to revive his clan and produce an heir for Konoha.’

So how's the story? I'm pretty unsure how people will take to this and so haven't really written the next chap. So if you find it's rubbish, I will trash the story. So tell me if you wanna read more or if I should dump it. If there's a next chap, there will probably be a Sasunaru lemon and then lots of angst... Yep. That's all.. All comments will be appreciated.
