Breaking Focus
Disclaimer: I do not own Lee, TenTen, Gai, Neji or any of the Naruto characters. *wishes she owned Shikamaru* Mmmm. Anyway, please enjoy and review. I love comments!
“TenTen! How did you miss that?!” Gai yelled from across the training field. He ran up to her, arms flailing, passing Neji practicing his chakra blocking on a dummy and Lee destroying a different dummy with his taijutsu. TenTen was practicing throwing kunai and shuriken at her dummy, but was missing horribly. Gai slid to a stop, kicking up dust next to her and admired her handywork. Kunai stuck in the bark of the trees around the dummy, while shuriken were impaling the ground and bushes. The dummy stood in the middle of the clearing, devoid of a scratch.
“TenTen?! How far is that dummy from here?” Gai asked as TenTen straightened her hunched posture.
“Ummm, about 10 meters, Gai-sensei,” she answered with a heave.
“EXACTLY!” Gai screamed flailing about again, catching the attentions of Neji and Lee. “You’ve hit living, breathing shinobi from three times that distance! Why can’t you hit a dummy right in front of you!?”
“I’m sorry, sensei. It’s just…” her eyes dropped to the ground.
“Out with it, TenTen! The youthful are becoming oldful as you hesitate!”
“It’s just….”TenTen glanced over at Lee. She snapped her eyes shut again and began to blush. Gai followed where her eyes had landed and immediately knew the problem. He grinned.
“It’s alright, TenTen. Go and take a break,” he leaned down close to her. “I’ll take care of everything”. He winked at her and gave her a thumb’s up. Slightly confused, she trudged towards a tree a few meters away to rest under. Gai walked over towards Lee and Neji.
“What’s wrong with TenTen, sensei?” Lee asked military style with a hint of concern in his voice. Gai put his arm around Lee’s shoulders and began to lead him away to the other side of the field.
“Neji, you can keep training. I need to speak with Lee for a minute,” Gai said over his shoulder. Neji looked from the green duo then at TenTen who was slumping over herself. He shook his head slowly from side to side and smirked before continuing his training.
“Lee, I must ask you for a favor,” Gai said solemnly once they were out of ear-shot of both Neji and TenTen. Lee’s eyes filled with excitement.
“A favor?! For my Gai-sensei, I will walk to the ends of the earth, fight any youma, kill any shinobi!” Gai grabbed Lee by the cheeks and squished his face together.
“The favor’s not for me, it’s for…” Gai averted his eyes and fixed them on the girl across the field with her dark hair up in buns, her face in her knees.
“TenTen?” Lee managed to squeeze out of his now fish face. Gai nodded and let go of Lee’s face. “What does she need? Is something plaguing her? Is she in trouble!? Fear not! I will save you, righteous TenTen!” Before Lee could take off across the field, Gai grabbed him by his bodysuit, leaving him running in midair.
“Eeeeaaasy, Lee. There’s no rush. She’s not in any mortal danger”. Once he felt Lee’s legs stop kicking, he dropped him back onto the ground. “Now Lee, TenTen..” Gai didn’t have a plan on how to get his subordinate to spend alone time with the troubled TenTen. His eyes moved about sparatically, trying to find a scapegoat. Then he noticed Lee’s bludgeoned dummy.
“TenTen feels her hand-to-hand combat isn’t up to snuff. She believes that she could be a hindrance to the team if she doesn’t brush up on her taijutsu. It bothers her to the point that her weaponry skills are starting to recede”. Lee brought his fingers up to his face and stroked his chin in thought.
“So the youthful TenTen wants a taijutsu lesson?” he asked. Gai smiled.
“Precisely. And I figured who better than my youthful Lee to give her this lesson!” Lee rejoiced with the confirmation of the assignment goal. He immediately turned towards TenTen. Gai called after him.
“Remember, Lee. Have her limbered up with our stretching techniques! We don’t want her tearing anything!” Lee shot a nice guy pose at his master, and Gai answered with his own. Lee turned and jogged to his melancholy companion. Gai relaxed his face muscles and began to think to himself.
Is it so wrong for me to try to get two of my students together? He thought of Kakashi pulling the same stunt on Naruto and Sakura. If Kakashi can do it so can I! Gai smiled and giggled like a school girl. Maybe I can surpass him in his matchmaking skills! He turned back and saw Lee approach TenTen. Hopefully, he thought, Lee doesn’t mention that those stretching techniques are the ones I do with him. He gasped. I must make sure everything goes smoothly or my rival Kakashi will beat me again without even doing anything! Gai took to the trees and prepared himself to spy on his protégée.
