Of Blossoms, Teachers, Foxes, and Brothers
Disclaimer: Sadly, I don’t own Naruto. I’m just a poor college student out for kicks.
Summary: In response to a Challenge by KonohaAlchemist. On a mission Sakura is kidnapped by Itachi. Kakashi and Naruto go to save her. While out training with Orochimaru, Sasuke hears about her kidnapping and goes to help her.
Pairings: SasuNaru, KakaIru, maybe others later on, depends on how the story develops!
A/N: (omg, I’m writing an AUTHOR’S note… *glee*) Ahem, this contains yaoi, so if you don’t like it, don’t read it, though it is a good story line if I do say so myself. ^^

Prologue
*************
He left.
That bastard left.
Uzumaki Naruto woke up in what he was sure was a hospital. He stared unseeingly at the ceiling. All he could focus on was the pain he felt deep in his chest. He had never felt pain this intense before. Sure, he’d felt lonely and sad because the villagers treated him like the demon he thought he was. That changed with Iruka, then with Kakashi, but most importantly, it changed with one Uchiha Sasuke.
Iruka saw past what other people could not. Even though his parents were killed by Kyuubi no Kitsune, and he had every right to hate Naruto because of the fox demon, he saw past that and saw the kid that was Naruto. Naruto was just that. A kid. A kid who had the great dream of becoming Hokage. Iruka and Naruto did have a few things in common. They both pulled pranks when younger; they both had short tempers, though Iruka’s was far more terrifying; they both grew up without parents. Iruka had always had a soft spot for Naruto, which made him push Naruto harder than everybody else while in the Academy. It’s true that Naruto finished dead last, and if it wasn’t for the fact that Iruka pushed him so hard in the first place, he probably would have finished second to last. But because Iruka cared enough to fail him, and then pass him when Naruto proved himself against Mizuki, Naruto turned out to be a better ninja than even he thought he could be.
Kakashi was another who saw past the demon. Granted his first thoughts about Naruto were “loud” “orange” “loud” and “idiot”, Naruto also proved himself to Kakashi. Kakashi noticed that even though Naruto was loud and could be an idiot, he was very loyal. That and he had… interesting… surprise tactics. The Number One Ninja at Surprises was definitely going to turn out to be a great ninja one day. While most people would see Naruto’s surprise tactics and think that he must be a genius to think that far ahead, Kakashi and ALL of Team 7 (including Naruto) knew that Naruto would just pull something out of thin air when everything else failed and with luck, he would defeat the enemy. Of course, Naruto would deny this and accept all claims of genius. When Kakashi heard about Naruto’s fight against Neji in the Chuunin exams, he burst into laughter. All ANBU and Jounins who thought they knew Kakashi were surprised to hear his laughter. Kakashi was very surprised that Naruto had defeated a real ninja genius. Yes, the Number One Ninja at Surprises was going to turn out to be a great ninja.
But Sasuke, Naruto’s biggest rival, was probably the person who touched Naruto the most. All throughout their Academy years, Naruto would witness the Uchiha’s genius and tried to divert the attention from Uchiha to himself by pulling pranks. He hated Sasuke. He hated how somebody could have so much attention and praise thrown in his direction, yet they would deflect it all. Naruto couldn’t understand how Sasuke didn’t realize that other people would die to have that kind of attention and he selfishly ignored it all. Naruto spent many an afternoon on his swing contemplating how stupid Sasuke was.
On graduation day, he over heard all the praise the Uchiha got, and heard all the hateful things said about him. He didn’t know why people treated him like the scum of the earth, but after that day, he knew all too well. When he showed up the next day for team assignments with his shiny new forehead protector, people were angry. Naruto knew why this time. They didn’t want a demon to be a ninja. He could understand that, but what he couldn’t understand was why people couldn’t see him as Naruto and not Kyuubi no Kitsune.
When he walked into the classroom, he saw Sasuke immediately sitting off to the side, his head resting on his hands and staring at nothing in particular. Again, he couldn’t understand how this guy wasn’t excited. So, he jumped onto the table in front of him. They made eye contact, Sasuke giving his Uchiha Death Glare, and Naruto narrowed his eyes as if he could concentrate enough to see what was going on inside the Uchiha’s head. Everything else seemed to fade away into nothingness as Naruto and Sasuke glared; Naruto out of jealousy and Sasuke out of annoyance. What happened next, neither boy would ever forget.
To the outside observer, one of the graduates stood up very fast and bumped Naruto’s backside, sending him flying forward onto the Uchiha. To Naruto and Sasuke, they only remember staring and then feeling the soft pressure of the others lips. In Naruto’s mind, after that was a blur because he never forget the intense feeling in his chest when he kissed the Uchiha. As fate would have it, he was placed on the same team as the Uchiha. Of course, he kept up his façade regarding Sakura as his crush, but he never forgot his first kiss.
Over the months, they grew to be best friends, even brothers, though strong rivals. Neither would admit to anybody the strong feelings they had for each other. Especially to each other. So when Sasuke left to join Orochimaru, Naruto followed to bring him back, not only because of his promise to Sakura, but his promise to himself. He wasn’t going to let his best friend run and turn into his brother.
The months before Sasuke left, Naruto and the Uchiha would train hard together. They would do almost everything together, with Naruto acting like his foolish self and Sasuke looking irritated. When Sasuke told Naruto during the Chuunin exams that he wanted to fight him, Naruto was shocked. He knew that Sasuke just paid him the biggest compliment he’d ever received. With the friendly banter of “Dobe” and “Teme” bouncing between the two, the rivals grew close.
Of course, the rivals never fought each other during the exams. They didn’t even pass. Naruto, of course, was livid, but not for the reason everybody would think he was livid for. He was mainly pissed because Uchiha Sasuke wasn’t made a Chuunin. Of course, he would never admit that to anybody. He even had a hard time coming to terms with it. Naruto cared for the Uchiha. When Naruto came to that discovery, he was angry and terrified. He didn’t know what to do.
Naruto remembered that night perfectly. He went out to the training grounds where Team 7 passed Kakashi’s test and sat on the very pillar he had been tied to. He remembered Sasuke offering him food; he remembered the feeling in his chest when he realized that Sasuke cared for his teammate, even though he had a demon inside of him. Of course Sasuke knew about Kyuubi no Kitsune. He wasn’t a genius for nothing. He heard everything his clan said about Naruto before they were slaughtered. Naruto knew that Sasuke knew, but they never mentioned it aloud.
While reminiscing about older times and trying to figure out his feelings for the Uchiha, Naruto failed to notice a new chakra presence.
“Naruto?” Sakura stepped into the training area. Naruto whipped around so fast he felt his neck strain. How stupid could he be? So wrapped up in his thoughts, it could have been anybody sneaking up on him and he would have been defenseless.
Rubbing his neck, Naruto grinned at Sakura. “Hey Sakura-chan! What are you doing out here so late?” Indeed the moon had risen and Naruto thought he was alone.
“Hi Naruto-kun. I saw you walk down the street from my window. I decided to follow you because you seemed off today during training. I just wanted to make sure you were OK. If you don’t want to talk about it I understand.” Sakura realized that she was rambling and stopped, holding her hands together and staring at her feet.
Naruto smiled a genuine smile. He didn’t give those out often. Sakura looked up to see it and returned the smile. It was true that while Sasuke and Naruto had gotten closer, it didn’t mean that they left Sakura out of the loop. Team 7 had become one of the most efficient teams because of their teamwork and friendship. Naruto gestured for Sakura to join him on the pillar. Sakura hopped up and played with her skirt nervously while she waited for Naruto to speak.
Naruto sighed deep. “I don’t know where to begin.” He glanced at Sakura, who nodded and stayed quiet. “I guess I’ll say first that I’m really glad that you came out here because I really needed to talk to somebody but I didn’t want to bother people with my issues.”
“Naruto-kun, you’d never bother me with your issues. I’m your friend,” Sakura pointed out.
“Oh, I know that Sakura-chan.” Naruto took a deep breath. “I think I’m in love with somebody.”
Sakura knew that he wasn’t talking about her. They were more like brother and sister now than anything else. Her interest got the better of her and she poked him in the side while giggling and asking, “Oh? Who?”
Naruto laughed. “I’m not going to tell you yet. I’m still very confused and would just like to talk about it and get my thoughts out there. I would like your input about it.”
“OK,” Sakura said.
“This person and I have an interesting sort of relationship. Something happened to h… this person, and I got this very strange feeling in my chest. I soon realized that I can’t bare the thought of this person being hurt in battle. Every time I see… this person, I can’t help but feel happy. Yet, I know it’s wrong. Our friendship would permit something more to happen.” Naruto let out another huge sigh and shrugged his shoulders. Sakura nodded and rubbed his shoulders, prompting him to continue. “This person has helped me through a lot. He was one of the few people who actually saw me as ME and not as this demon.” Sakura knew about Kyuubi no Kitsune; it was unfair for teammates to keep secrets. Sakura also noticed something of grave importance.
“He?” Sakura asked curiously, thinking she heard Naruto wrong. “It’s Sasuke, isn’t it?” Sakura smiled when Naruto blanched. “I KNEW it!” Sakura jumped and gave a whoop of joy. When she finally returned, Naruto was resting his elbows on his legs, his hands holding his head up. She realized that she probably just did the worst thing a person could do in this situation. “I’m sorry Naruto. I just got too excited. I’m really here to listen though. Please, I would like to help.” Naruto looked up and Sakura saw the tears running freely down his face.
Now, lying in a hospital bed, the tears ran down into his hair. He failed to retrieve Sasuke. They fought, but not like they had before. Sasuke told Naruto that he thought of him as his best friend and that he needed to kill him. Naruto was so confused but focused on one thing; Bring Sasuke back. But even in that, he’d failed. The pain in his chest was so heavy he didn’t think he could even breathe. He managed shuddering sobs, and turned his head to the side, toward the window. It was a bright, beautiful day outside. For some reason, that made Naruto cry harder. He lost his best friend, his love.
Something caught Naruto’s eye, he looked toward the side table and saw a vase of daffodils. Sakura was here, he thought. He smiled through the tears. He should have known he wasn’t alone.
There was a knock on the door and before Naruto could say anything, let alone dry his tears, Sakura walked in.
“Naruto-kun! You’re awake! You’ve been out for a week!” Sakura ran to his side and saw the tears. “Oh, Naruto.” Tears began to well up inside her eyes as she grasped Naruto’s hand.
They gripped each other’s hand tightly as they cried on each other’s shoulder; Naruto for his lost love, Sakura for her lost teammate and for her friend’s heartbreak.
TBC…
Coming up next: 7 years later, they’re all 19 years old. Sakura is on a mission for Tsunade and is kidnapped! The reactions of Kakashi and Naruto. Maybe some KakaIru romance thrown in. Maybe throw in some Sasuke, how he turned out, and what his reaction is. REVIEW and let me know what you want!
