I do not own Naruto, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story.
Chapter One - Naruto
Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto… unfortunately.
Any similarity between this work of fanfiction and any other is entirely coincidental.
Authors Note: Well, here’s my first attempt at fanfiction. Wish me luck! Oh, and I don’t have a Beta… so, there’s probably gonna be a few mistakes here and there. XD
Gosh. I also hope I’m in character. . At least somewhat anyway. I may have screwed them up a little here and there. Oh, and second chapter will be much larger. ;D
Soul Mission
We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
Or rats’ feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar.

Chapter One – Naruto
“I am Uzumaki Naruto; karaoke king, ramen connoisseur and paranormal specialist. I just turned twenty and despite being an utterly gorgeous specimen with a winning personality I still haven’t managed to get a girlfriend. Some people just can’t recognize greatness.
Right now I live in a ratty apartment with a crazy old guy who is without a doubt the most perverted person to ever exist. At least he pays most of the rent without complaint. I can’t make a contribution of my own due to never having a real job, which is totally not my fault. I’m just a victim of circumstance.
My life is pretty odd right now, mostly because I spend most of my time with dead people. No, I’m not a necrophilic, though admittedly some of them are really hot.
You see, there are some people that when they die can’t leave this world behind. They’re hurting too much. I do my best to set them free of that pain so they can go on to… whatever’s next I guess. Or if they don’t want to go, I at least try cheering them up a little. I hate seeing people cry.
Sure it can get hard sometimes but it’s my duty and I’m happy to do it. They need me. Oh, did I mention my love of ramen?”
“Look kid, if you insist on narrating your sorry life could you at least do it quietly.” Muttered a gruff voice from across the room.
“Huh?” The ‘utterly gorgeous’ Uzumaki Naruto spun around to face the ‘perverted’ old man that was draped across their ratty old cough. “You don’t have to listen. I’m only trying to make sense of my rather crazy life.” He stuck out his tongue in a juvenile display.
“You are standing in the middle of the room talking to empty air. In your extra loud voice mind you. You’re disrupting my peace, so unless you quiet down I’m going to shove a pillow down your throat.”
While muttering about ‘dirty old men’ Naruto did as he was told, knowing Jiraiya would indeed do as he threatened. The last experience, involving soap, certainly hadn’t been any fun. He was extremely sure that he didn’t want to find out the exact taste of one of those mouldy old pillows. They could have any number of bugs and diseases.
“Hey, don’t you have people soul’s to save?”
Naruto shook his head; completely missing the brief flash of fondness in the older mans eyes. “Nah. I’ve got to wait for the call. That feeling I get. Jeez, you should know that, I’ve told you often enough.”
“Hmph. I’m trying to get you out of the house. I can’t get inspiration for my writing watching you. In fact, you’re counterproductive to my mind.” Jiraiya pointed at the door. “Now out.”
“Fiiine. I’m going, you old pervert.”
Naruto laughed as he ducked out the door, just avoiding the pillow that had been aimed at his head.
--
Strolling down the street with his hands in the pockets, Naruto was a picture of boredom. His blond hair was in its usual state of disarray and his blue eyes kept mostly to the ground, inspecting the bumps and holes in the path. These last few weeks had been disgustingly dull. Surely soon things would pick up a little.
A previously unnoticed woman passed by him on the sidewalk. As she walked past, a little quiver of premonition made him stop and turn. She was a dark haired woman that walked with a slight hunch to her shoulders. To Naruto’s practised eye she looked tired and worried. This was exactly what he was after.
Thankyou lady fortune! I’m in your debt!
“Hey, hey!”
Naruto called out for her attention, ignoring the dark suspicious look she sent his way as he approached. He noticed that there was a bandage on her left hand, which she lifted to her chest in a protective gesture.
“Are you talking to me?” She asked while eyeing him up and down.
Stopping in front of her, Naruto put his hands on his hips and gave her a wide grin. “I sure am. You have a problem and I’m going to help you.”
“What? Who-who are you? Are you stalking me?” She demanded, taking a step back. “I’ll call the police.”
“Woah, relax.” Naruto said while waving his arms around wildly in a way that only managed to make her flinch and glance around for an escape. Jeez, she sure was jumpy. “I seriously just want to help you.” Before she could run away he hurried on. “Got any ghostly activity, strange occurrences… that sort of thing. I can help, really I can.”
“You can help with ghosts?” She still looked suspicious.
“Sure can.”
“What is your name young man?”
“Uzumaki Naruto at your service.”
“Well, my name is Machiko. If I… if I tell you my story, you’ll think I’m crazy.”
“Heh. No way!
Though still wary, she smiled. “Alright. I suppose it couldn’t hurt.”
---
Having managed to coax the woman to the nearest coffee shop (conveniently forgetting to mention that he didn’t have a dollar to his name to buy his coffee with), Naruto sat back and listened to the story unfold.
“My son and I just moved into a new house close by here. Almost as soon as we settled in strange things started happening; items would fall over and break, things would go missing and I would hear the oddest noises. Then my dog Matsu… he started acting really agitated, he would even growl at me. Yesterday…” She bit her lip, glancing away. “… he bit me. I can’t understand it.”
Clearly upset that her beloved dog would turn against she put her hands in her head and wept.
Naruto reached across the table and put a hand on her shoulder. “I’ll do my best to fix the problem.”
“Oh, I wish you could. Thankyou, but my son would never let you. He doesn’t believe there’s really a problem; he thinks I’m just making things up. If I brought you over he would never forgive me.”
‘So?’ Naruto wanted to say but clearly this woman lacked a spine. That son must be a real ass. “Hey, don’t worry about your son. Just give me the address. Nothing will stand in my way!”
“Oh… thankyou Naruto.” Machiko gave him a grateful smile. “But…”
“Heh. Your son won’t even know I’ve come. I’ll be like a ninja, silent as a shadow!” Naruto gave her a thumbs up and a wink. “You can count on me!”
Mission Start!
