Worth Saving You
Naruto was breathing hard, his chest heaving painfully against the bruises forming around his crushed, possibly broken, ribs. He was bleeding a lot, the fluid hot and wet but cooling rapidly against his clammy skin. He pushed himself up, his knees wobbling under him, and buckling, refusing to hold his weight on the first try. Still, he managed to stand, move shakily over to Sakura.
Things didn't look good, Sai had gone to get backup and the two of them had fought as well as they could. It still ended the same way though, Sakura on the ground, bleeding heavily, looking up at him imploringly. Naruto's breaths were scattered and harsh as he sank to his knees beside her. The shining blue of the barrier surrounded them, keeping them safe for now.
He mumbled low, telling Sakura everything would be alright, he'd fix this, but they both knew he couldn't. Sakura was bleeding too badly, she couldn't move, and her breath came in gasping cycles, her lungs filling slowly with blood. She met his eyes, pleading as well as she could with just that glance. Naruto could feel the responsibility burning into his gut, knowing that he couldn't let her die without keeping that one last promise, but knowing that she was going to die now, without a doubt.
He closed his eyes, breathing deeply, before they snapped open, his hands flying through seals he faintly remembered, coming to rest a little to harshly on her stomach with a yell of words he hoped he'd gotten right. He'd learned this jutsu a long long time ago, when team Kakashi was still whole, but for obvious reasons he'd never performed it himself before, hell he wasn't even sure if it was real and not someone's idea of a joke. It was too late for doubts now though, as he channeled his chakra through his hands with all his might, concentrating on directing it with blind precision.
Then came the pain, ripping through his own stomach like white hot fire, like razor wire under his skin. He felt the tingle of the energy, the jutsu moving things around inside, his organs shifting, and he could see the bursting orange light around him, even with his eyes shut tightly, his teeth set against the rippling agony seeping up into his chest now.
Then as quickly as it started everything stopped, the energy snapping back, focusing to a point inside of him and gathering tightly. It was warm, his skin tingled, and he opened his eyes tentatively. He felt something had been changed, and that could only have meant one thing. It had worked, at least on some level. He smiled, even as he felt the tears hot on his cheeks.
This meant Sakura was dead, but it also meant that he had saved her child.
