Of Boys and Bentos
Chapter One - Of Boys and Bentos
Sasuke tried to quell the feeling of rage that boiled in his stomach as he watched through the leaves. Naruto was his best friend. Sakura was their teammate. He’d been gone for three years, and though Naruto has also been gone for most of that time, Sakura had been assured of his return. It only made sense that they relied on each other far more than they could ever trust him. It was only fair that she gave up the childish crush who barely acknowledged her existence and developed feelings for the boy – young man – who obviously cherished her.
Then why did it make him so angry? Why didn’t he say anything, or at least make his presence known?
He’d gotten up quite early that morning, taken care of several errands, and then decided to come train. Certain of his skills were woefully out of shape due to his arrogance while training with Orochimaru, and he wanted to polish them on days like today, where the rest of his team wasn’t supposed to be there. He’d come to their old practice grounds, however, to find the pair of them already sparing. Having not seen either of them fight – save against him, during which he was too busy to appreciate their skill – in years, he’d settled in the branches of a tree and watched.
Sasuke couldn’t help admiring them both. Naruto, whom he’d always teased as being an idiot slacker, certainly had improved his control of the insane amounts of chakra which coursed through him. He’d grown more serious, and his attacks showed a presence of tactical thinking beyond what anyone would have suspected him capable of only a few years previous. And Sakura…
She was almost a blur when she moved, and though he’d always known her control was the best of any of them, she had found a strength he never thought she’d posses. The ground they practiced on was cracked and cratered thanks to her exceptional blows, and though she was breathing quickly from exertion, she’d healed herself of any wounds Naruto might have inflicted as soon as she could, keeping them from being a constant drain on her body. She certainly was holding her own against their blonde teammate, though it was obvious that neither of them was quite going all out. Deadly attacks were used, but none that couldn’t be dodged or pulled at the last moment.
Sasuke had actually found the fight intriguing enough to turn on his Sharingan and attempt to learn a few of their moves. He hadn’t yet deactivated it when they stopped for lunch, and if it weren’t for that fact, he never would have believed his eyes. Naruto growled at some comment of Sakura’s, then pulled the laughing girl into a hug, planting a brief kiss on her cheek. Rather than pound him into last month’s hamburger, Sakura had merely swatted his arm lightly before making her way to their small pile of equipment and handing his bento over.
At that point Sasuke couldn’t take it any longer. Scenes played through his head – everything from Sakura feeding Naruto from her own chopsticks, as she had so many years before when their sensei had tied him to a post, to the two of them abandoning their meal all together for a romp in the field – and he dropped to the ground. Two pairs of eyes swiveled quickly in his direction, and his stomach dropped as he saw the weapons which suddenly appeared in their hands before recognition dawned and they put them away.
“Sasuke-kun! You’re just in time for lunch. I packed plenty, and then we can all train together afterwards. It’ll be just like old times!” The pink-haired girl – young woman, he corrected himself – smiled sunnily at him, unaware that anything might be amiss.
He muttered an annoyed, “ch,” before glaring at Naruto, shoving his hands in his pockets, and turning away. He was gone in an instant, leaving his teammates to shake their heads in confusion.
It was only fair that Sakura loved Naruto. But life isn’t fair, is it?

“What’s that bastard’s problem, anyway?” Naruto growled as he continued shoveling food into his mouth.
Sakura’s response was merely to punch the top of his head, leaving a sizable goose-egg. “Naruto, how many times to I have to tell you not to call him that?” She sighed, shoving the hurt which had been a constant part of her life ever since meeting Sasuke down to a manageable level. “He’s always been like that, and after everything he’s gone through the past few years, it’s surprising he’s not more anti-social, so stop making things worse!”
Naruto paused with his chopsticks half-way to his mouth, stung. “I’m not trying to make it worse; I’ve always called him that! And I was just trying to figure out why the hell he’s being such a jerk, that’s all. If it’s something I did, I want to know. And if it’s somebody else, I want to kill them!”
Sakura sighed, shaking her head. “I know, Naruto, I know. But we’ve got to let him handle things on his own until he wants to talk to us. So don’t egg him on.”
“Fine,” the blonde conceded at last. “But if he doesn’t knock it off soon, I swear I’m going to…”
His tirade was cut short by another thunk from Sakura’s fist, and the meal finished in silence.

Thanks to Lilith and Laurachan for being the first ones to review this story. At Lilith's request, I've spaced things out a bit. Hopefully that will make it easier to read.
Okay, so the first few chapters are going to be a little short, as he get various pieces of the situation, but things will pick up shortly, never fear.
I have a request to make, however. I'm stuck! I'm thirty-five pages into this thing, so it's not like I'll stop updating anytime soon, but I need some help. My fickle muse was laughing visciously, so I decided to put the question to you, my dear readers. Please pay attention.
Someone is going to die, and though I have a pretty good idea who it is and how, Melpomene refuses to divulge all her secrets. In an effort to force the recalcitrant muse to comply with my wishes to finish the tale, I'm asking my readers to give me their oppinions on the subject.
Please, vote. I would appreciate your reasons as to your choices, as simply saying "I think so-and-so should die," really doesn't give me much to go on. However, if you are having difficulty explaining your choice, I can understand. Just tell me what you can.
Thanks much for you assistance and enjoy the tale. Have a good day, and good reading to you all!
Crimson Iris
PS> For those of you who don't know, Melpomene is the Greek Muse of tragic theater. Sorry for any confusion.
