Without Warning

A/N: This is a high school AU. The pairings will be Naruto/Ino and Kankuro/Tenten. Crack pairings yes but I do love them. There is a hint of Sasuke/Sakura also. Sorry if any of these offend, if so I apologize and hope you find something else more to your liking. Also, after tonight my net will be out for a week or two, so it will be a few days before I can update again. Other than that I hope you enjoy.

(I've also written a similar fic under my old pen name in the Inu Xover section, so if there is familarity then that is why. I wanted a highschool Naruto so here it is.)

CHAPTER ONE

“What the hell does he see in her?”

Tenten didn’t bother looking up from her lunch of cold noodles to look up at the girl in question. The question coming from her best friend so she knew which unfortunate female was being targeted. For the last year she had to listen to the blonde bitch and moan about the school hottie’s taste in females. Tenten didn’t like to point out that up until two years ago said female had once been attached to Ino’s side. “She’s not that bad.”

“Not bad, she’s atrocious. I’m not complaining that he didn’t pick me but out of all the girls in this school that he could have why did he pick her?” Ino couldn’t understand it for the life of her. What did Sasuke see in the pink-haired moron? She knew Sakura better than anyone and she just didn’t see the two meshing well. Sasuke Uchiha was the most popular guy since they were freshman and now as seniors he’d finally made a choice between his fangirls. It just wasn’t fair! Ino seethed thinking of all the guys that currently had the hots for her former best friend. One was trailing behind the couple even now. Lee and Neji, another famous duo was chatting amongst themselves in a tight little group. Although Lee wouldn’t date any of the few girls in school because he was so enamored with Sakura. “He could have any girl in this school.”

“I beg to differ,” she did greatly. Tenten had never understood what girls saw in the moody guy. Sure, Sasuke was cute, rich, well-built, but he was rather short and carried an attitude like it was the latest fashion. There were a few other guys that were worse when it came to being jerks but the Uchiha heir was right up there with the rest of them. There was at least one girl in the school that wouldn’t fall at those feet. She liked her guys somewhat different, more like her latest and longest crush. Neji Hyuuga was what she wanted and who she wanted more than anything. She’d grown up with him, Lee and Hinata but circumstances had her moving away during freshman year. For two years her parents had lived in a city three hours away and she’d lost touch with her old friends. Last year she’d returned to find that everything had changed, they had changed. Neji had yet to speak to her in over a year, Lee smiled on occasion and Hinata often spoke to her in class but that was were it ended. It was true, friends came and went.

“You don’t count since you are my best friend and best friends know its taboo to go after the same guy.” Ino rankled because the comment hit home. Okay, so she would have been pissed off at Sakura for liking the same guy as her but she wouldn’t have ended their friendship and that was exactly what Sakura had done. The bitch had just walked up to her one day and said they were now rivals. Couldn’t they have been friendly rivals? Obviously not, from that day forward Sakura had looked at her like an enemy. Well, that was fine with Ino because she’d win in the end. At the time Sasuke hadn’t shown any interest in either of them so there had been a chance that Sakura was ending a long friendship for nothing, which had hurt.

“I got taste,” Tenten muttered beneath her breath. There had never been an opportunity that she didn’t let her friend know how she felt. There was nothing really special about either guy walking by them but both of them were fascinated. She knew that she was attracted to Neji’s polite –if indifferent- demeanor. Neji was perfect and way out of her league. She had discovered this within a week of returning. To think that the boy she’d liked for so long had become someone untouchable stung. He was part of a very large and rich family, next in line to take over the company. It was true he didn’t speak to her but was calm and collected with those he did converse with; she watched him in class everyday.

“Yeah, if you say so but that’s what I love about you, your tastes are completely different from my own.” Ino settled back onto the hard plastic surface that the school dared to call a seat and sighed. What did it matter? She’d tried to get Sasuke’s attention on many an occasion and had been coldly brushed aside. As long as that dimwit was with him then he wasn’t going to look at another girl. She’d even tried dating someone else and that had been a complete mess. Being an idiot she’d picked one of the worst choices in their entire school district. He being a year older she’d figured the brunette would be a good choice but she’d been dead wrong. Kankuro had turned into her worst mistake and she was still paying for it.

“Did you get that list?” Tenten pushed away her plate in dismay. She didn’t have much of an appetite seeing the cheeky blonde running up to her dream and throwing freckled arms around his neck. What was her name again? Taya the Tart! Now she could pose the same question: What the hell did Neji see in that thing? He could have his choice but he was dating a chick that made even Ino look boob-less in comparison. At least one could say that Sakura hadn’t been chosen for her looks but her personality. Eyeing the Hyuuga heir’s latest dish, Tenten knew she didn’t stand a chance at catching his attention. “I’ve got to hit the store on the way home.”

“Yes, but I know Mr. Sakamoto isn’t going to let us be partners. I got a feeling he’s going to put me with someone really stupid because of that fat comment I made the other day.” Ino hated their history teacher with a passion. The fat greasy bastard was always brushing up against her ass whenever he got the chance. There had to a law against someone that disgusting teaching teenage girls. She couldn’t prove the unwanted rubbing so had to endure it until graduation in four months. “This grade is going to determine whether or not I graduate and he’s going to punish me I know it. He’ll stick me with someone that can’t read or someone like Shikamaru. I’ll be the one to do all of the work and flunk because I suck at history.”

“You worry too much. You know I’ll help you anyways.” Tenten loved history and it was her favorite subject despite who taught it. The ugly man didn’t bother her but she wasn’t sporting a large set of breasts either. Since returning she’d only been asked out one time and had refused. Not that she was stuck up or thought too highly of herself but she wasn’t about to go out with the school reject. Hell she couldn’t even remember the guy’s name but he’d been unclean, uncut and all around unhealthy for her social status. Maybe it was because she was just an average girl; she wasn’t something that warranted attention and always standing next to Ino guys tended to look over her. It didn’t make her love her friend any less though. It wasn’t Ino’s fault to be born beautiful.

“He’ll know you helped and flunk me anyways. I got an idea, why don’t we skip?” Ino clapped her hands together and looked more than pleased with the idea. “If we both are out when he’s pairing people then tomorrow he’ll have no choice but to put us together because everyone else will be taken. It’s perfect!”

“Yeah and it means we’ll also be stuck with the shit assignment. I’d rather have another partner than being the last to pick my subject. The last time we did that we got stuck doing the human reproductive system and you failed me!” Tenten should have known better than to let Ino take the stand and make their report. It had been humiliating to listen to her partner refer to the penis as the man’s twig. When the teacher had asked why she felt the need to change the correct term for it Ino had failed them instantly by saying she was only reporting from personal experience. At the time the blonde hadn’t long broken up with her last boyfriend. When word had gotten back to him a large fight had given Tenten a migraine for weeks to come and it hadn’t even been her argument.

“Blah, sorry but you write what you know.” Ino scoffed at the reminder. So what if she had never actually inspected the size of Kankuro’s pecker but the ass had been spreading rumors about her so it was only fair she returned the favor. It had been a mistake to try dating when she still liked Sasuke and he hadn’t taken it kindly when they’d been making out one night and she’d softly spoken another’s name. A day later it was all over school that she’d banged twelve guys at once and it went up like a rocket. If she were correct her latest count was at over a hundred. It was a shame she didn’t have a list of all the guys that had claimed to have joined her in bed or she’d personally pay a visit to each one. It was that jackass’s fault and she made sure he knew how much she hated him everyday.

“You don’t know and that was the problem. Small or huge it’s still a penis and a man’s primary thinking facility. We are going to class and you can just pray the he lets you team up with me.” Tenten could understand her friend’s want of wanting to skip class but she had a valid point. Mr. Sakamoto had given them a list of subjects to look over and once paired up they could decide what they wanted to work on. Of course there was a catch; you had to win the right to choose which one you got. Ten topics and a quiz would be given, depending on the team’s score is in which order the subjects got selected. Needless to say team number ten would probably get the hardest and shittiest topic.

“Fine, but if I get stuck with someone stupid you are helping me.” Ino had to graduate in order to get away from her annoying family. There was no way in hell she was being stuck as a florist for the rest of her life. She wanted to be a designer, she simply adored clothes. It was all set in her mind; she’d make the clothes while Tenten ran the business.

“Come on,” she grabbed her bag to indicate it was time for them to haul ass. The bell was ringing and their class was on the other side of campus. Knowing the blonde, they’d be there late. Ino loved to take her time walking so it was more like a stroll than a march to make it on time.

The walk towards the cramped building had Ino wishing she’d convinced the other girl to skip. She really hated this class! What the hell was so interesting about what happened over a century ago? She was more into the here and now, what was new and happening. All they were being taught was that men constantly made the same mistakes over and over again. On the way she spotted Shikamaru and Kiba crouched behind a staircase smoking. They had the right idea, without the cancer sticks. What would another day of forgoing listening to those lousy lectures hurt?

Tenten ignored the murderous glare penetrating her back. This was for the best if they wanted to get out of this hellhole. She’d kill someone if she got stuck researching the French Revolution. Out of all the countries and wars she hated that one and it was on the list. She’d gotten stuck with Hinata during their last assignment so it hadn’t been too bad. There wasn’t much of a crowd once they reached the classroom. Their usual table was free and that’s where they headed without pause. The late bell rang as she placed her bag down next to her chair. Glancing around the room she noticed no one was absent.

“I got a bad feeling about this,” Ino cringed as a spiky brown head turned around from two tables up. Blue eyes narrowed in contempt as her ex smirked. What the hell was his problem? He had to be the dumbest shit in the class, her luck she’d get stuck with him. Might as well sign up for welfare now, he was the only one in here over eighteen years old. If she remembered correctly he had turned nineteen just last month. What kind of idiot was still in high school at that age? She and Tenten were still seventeen but she’d be eighteen after graduation. Then it was time to move out and get a life.

“Probably that pizza you ate at lunch attacking your digestive system.” Tenten didn’t mind as long as she got a decent topic but she wasn’t worried about it because she could usually ace the pop quizzes given by their teacher, which meant she’d get one of the top choices.

“No worse than that chicken you had.” Ino grunted as the large man rolled into the room wearing a smug look. Great, it begins. She saw how he sent a rather nasty look at their table and she had a feeling the man wasn’t pissed because Tenten chose the chicken for lunch. “I’m doomed.”

Mr. Sakamoto cleared his throat ignoring the squeaking sound of someone being rather rude. He had one of those in every class and he was sure which one was responsible for the foul noise. Every year he was forced to teach a bunch of ingrates and this year had been no difference. “Settle down unless you want extra homework for this weekend. No need to check attendance, I can see that all of you were just dying to make it to my class today. Since we have a lot to cover today I will get straight to pairing you up. I decided to make the pairings as fair as possible to give each of you a chance to pass. So everyone stand up and move to the side, you can take a seat as I call your names and this will be your permanent seat for the remainder of the semester.”

“Yamanaka Ino,” a chubby finger pointed to the front table directly looking at the man’s desk. The seat next to it was indicated, “Uzumaki Naruto, get up here I don’t want to hear any comments.”

Tenten suppressed a laugh as both blondes sluggishly trailed to the table as if being brought before the firing squad. Oh yeah, the man definitely remembered Ino’s comment about his wide girth. Everyone knew that Naruto was on the verge of failing the class due to rather pathetic grades. Not that he was stupid, just liked too goof off too much and it was one thing the old man hated more than being called fat. She ran a hand up her arms wondering if the heater was broken in the room. There was a slight chill in the air. What she wanted to do was dig through her bag and put on her jacket but he had yet to call her name. Everyone was looking around the room as pairs found their appointed seat.

“Oh and I thought I was screwed.” Ino snorted as the last two people were left standing on the side of the room. If she had bad luck then fate was enjoying a good laugh at her friend’s expense.

“Ugh,” what the hell had she done to deserve this? Tenten knew better than to object to
his choice in partners. She wouldn’t point out that it was as bad as his taste in clothes. Taking her new seat she tried to ignore the snickers surrounding her. This time around she’d definitely be doing all the work. That obese sack of twinkies was setting her up to help that jerk pass and that’s what her partner was too.

“Suck it,” Kankuro didn’t acknowledge the threat to attend detention. Like she had any room to talk, everyone knew the only reason she was passing was because she got her dyke friend to do all the work. Well this time the friend would be doing it for him. He made sure to slam his pack back down on the table and took his seat next to his new partner.

“Great,” Tenten withdrew her notebook with the list. She didn’t bother asking him what he wanted to choose between. They both already knew who’d be doing all of the work on it.

“Now that you have your seats I’m going to go over a few rules. You will pick your topic as usual. Between the two of you a ten page essay will be complete with the use of spellcheck. I also want a Power Point presentation consisting of no less than fifteen and nothing sloppy. To finish it off I want a debate between both for pros and cons of your topic.”

“What?!” Shikamaru couldn’t ignore this last request. It would have been easy to let Hinata stand up there and go over their work but he had to get up there with her? That was too much work, they weren’t in college.

“I didn’t stutter. Now, let’s get on with the quiz. One for each team will suffice. I suggest you let the one that doesn’t sleep in class answer for you.”

“That leaves you out,” Tenten made sure to reach for the test being given them. There was no way she’d let him take it for them. Why did she have to get stuck with Ino’s ex of all people? She’d rather have Naruto for a partner. The guy was a tad irresponsible but at least she’d be able to listen to him talking without wanting to grind her teeth.

“Fine,” Kankuro leaned back in his seat and watched as she quickly marked answers on the paper. He lucked out on one factor: he’d gotten a smart partner. He was actually trying to graduate this year. There was a job lined up for him where his father worked but he had to have his diploma first. Not that he was in a hurry to move out, why should he be? Two years ago his parents had gotten tired of him coming in at odd hours and given him the small room over their garage. It meant he could come and go as he pleased and didn’t have to worry about his parents. The only person that bugged him on occasion was his younger brother and that was rare. Gaara liked to keep to himself and Temari was always off with her boyfriend.

Tenten held up her hand indicating she was done. With a bright smile it was taken and quickly graded. She couldn’t help but return the smile when he informed them that they were to be Team One.

“Good going Tidbit,” Kankuro almost laughed seeing a blonde head turn in frustration. Ino was in the process of snatching the paper away from a whining Uzumaki. That’s what the girl got. “So, what subject are we going to pick?”

“Not we, I’m going to choose War World Two.” She had made sure to answer quickly in hopes of getting the topic. The library had plenty of information on it and even the one sitting next to her would be able to help in a debate.

“Whatever, but don’t forget I just can’t walk up there when it’s time looking like a moron.” He wasn’t looking forward to the extra school work but would be damned if the uptight little tart pushed him aside as if he didn’t matter.

“Why not, you do it all the time anyways?” Tenten had bristled at the stupid name. It was better than Bitch or Trollop which she’d heard him dub a few unfortunate females.

“Listen here you little dyke, if you want to trade insults I’m all for it but unless you can split that sad excuse for an ass in two then you’re stuck with me.” He drummed his fingers over the hard surface loving the way she puffed up. All in all he’d say they were off to a great start. They’d already spoken more words to each other than they had in the months he’d been dating her best friend. For some reason whenever he was around the girl had never spoken much or maybe she had been ignoring his presence.

“Fine but don’t call me that.” She wasn’t a lesbian or dyke as he called it. Just because she didn’t whore herself around like all the chicks he liked to hang out with didn’t make her interested in the same sex. It was rather rude of him because she didn’t look like one either. Sure she wore her hair up but she was in no way manly.

“No problem, but if you don’t want to confuse a guy try stuffing a little padding in there.” He let his gaze drop down to the loose fitting white shirt that only mildly accented a pair of small breast. No wonder he had never considered hitting on her, she wasn’t his type. She had been scenery when he’d been dating Ino, someone that was always there.

A few tables away Ino grumbled noticing that only Shikamaru and Hinata were left still answering the quiz. Not only would she be forced to look at the tub of guts but she had a dork to help her. Fuck it; if the assignment sucked she could be happy that at least Naruto was amusing and kind of cute. Well, he was until a certain name escaped his mouth and she wanted to plant his toothy smile into the table. Sakura, Sakura, Sakura, if she never heard that name again it’d be too soon.

“I think this one is B.” Naruto was sure that the war had started in that century. He smiled when Ino circled it before raising her hand. He didn’t mind who he’d gotten stuck with, he’d always considered the blonde a friend and she was fun to hang around. She was also his inside source on the love of his life too.

“I guess we have to wait and see what is left.” Ino just hoped it was something she could contend with. Her sympathy went out to her best friend who didn’t look too happy at the moment. As soon as class was over she’d have to make sure to point out that skipping would have been better. Your best friend knows best.

“I told you we should have skipped.” Ino swore if another book was placed in front of her she’d torch the entire library down. Did she really need all of these? And were any of them in French? “I’m going to be stuck doing all of this you know. I don’t think Naruto is going to be of much help unless there are pictures of Sakura in these.”

“Sorry, but I got the short end.” Tenten placed the last thing she’d need on the table. All that was left was for them to check out and head back to her place. They’d been given the assignment two days ago and she hadn’t started. Perhaps because she wanted to come up with an outline on how to work it but it had been rather difficult to bring it up to her partner. The last two days one look at his face and she’d practically shriveled in her shoes.

“Yeah, sucks to be you. I’m telling you now that Kankuro does not know how to do anything right. If you let him he’ll try to do it his way which will be totally ass-backwards and wrong.” Ino was starting to believe she’d rather deal with her ex’s moodiness than listening to Naruto question her about Sakura.

“I know what you mean. Did you see the look on his face today? I was too scared to say anything.” She didn’t want to risk a fight if she didn’t have to. Tomorrow would be her last day to actually ask him about when to start working on their assignment.

“Nope, I was too busy not trying to notice how the buttons of Mr. Sakamoto’s shirt was threatening to burst open.” Ino counted five text books in front of her. She’d have back damage before she got home. “Is this all?”

“Yes, for now.” Tenten escorted them to the checkout and put them all under her name. She was sure Ino still owed a fine. The public library was the best source of information. She had a computer at home and that was where they could do their Power Point but first they had to work on gathering needed information. “What are we doing on Saturday?”

“We can sit at your place and veg out or we can go to the party Kiba is throwing.” Ino’s vote was for the party. She’d bought this tight little dress that would demand attention and she was hoping Sasuke would show up. “I think Neji is going to show up.”

“Really?” That might be interesting. Tenten almost got excited until she remembered that he wouldn’t be alone. “So what, the tart is going to be with him. A lot of good that is going to do me! You know I got as good a chance as getting Neji as you do getting Sasuke. I think we are wasting our time.”

“Spare me,” Ino shoved the books into her bag ignoring the questioning look the elderly woman was giving them. Without pause she started walking without waiting for her friend to explain. “Listen, what does Sakura have that I don’t?”

“Besides Sasuke?” Score one for Tenten! She saw her friend flinch but had to drive her point home. At least she and Neji had been friends at one time but Sasuke had never paid any attention to Ino. “I probably have a better chance of being getting Neji to propose than you do of getting Sasuke to ask you out. We need to just get over it and die as miserable old hags.”

“You can give up if you want but I most certainly will not. Where is your sense of adventure?” Ino couldn’t and wouldn’t believe that Sakura had her hooks into him that deep. A little bit of work she was sure she could get Sasuke’s attention.

“It went when your ex became my history partner. What chances do we have? I’m far from Neji’s ideal woman and I’m not even sure what that is but I know it’s not me. And the sad thing is you have less a chance with Sasuke. I heard him in Chemistry and he was talking about marriage and that means a dedicated relationship.” Tenten hadn’t wanted to bring that bit of information up but it needed to be said.

“Really? I bet you that I can get Sasuke to ask me out before you could drag Neji away from his leech.” Ino stopped just outside the library doors and waited for a reply. She wouldn’t give up on Sasuke yet. He was different from all the other males in school and she meant to have him.

“You’re on, I think.” Tenten was quick to answer believing there was no way in hell Sasuke would turn away from his girlfriend, not even for Ino. So she didn’t really have to worry about trying to get Neji’s attention.

“Awesome, the loser has to streak during graduation.” Ino wasn’t about to lose, she was tired of not getting what she wanted.

“HELL NO!” Tenten didn’t want to be a chicken. “Okay, the loser has to streak in their bra and panties. I won’t go nude in front of all those people.”

“Alright, that works. Prepare to flash those granny panties to Mr. Fatty because you are so going to lose. We need to set some rules.” Ino unlocked her car and slid behind the wheel. She waited until they were buckled up before continuing. “No getting them drunk or lying about a pregnancy. We can get outside help besides each other.”

“No paying them to pretend, it has to be a real relationship.” Tenten was doomed, it was best to buy a pair of decent underwear. Of course Ino would be flashing everyone right behind her. “Anything else?”

“Nope, besides those few rules anything goes. Which means we have a party to attend to this weekend; don’t we?” Ino cranked up the car and backed out of the crowded parking lot. “Oh, the deadline is the week before graduation or until one of us calls it quits. If that happens then the other is automatically the winner.”

“Done,” Tenten suddenly felt queasy. She wasn’t sure how far she would go to win but what could it hurt to try? There were a few things she could try. If she admitted it to herself she hadn’t really gone out of her way to get his attention so maybe doing so would get her somewhere. The sad part was she wasn’t sure what to do. She wasn’t good at flirting or getting a guy’s attention. “A final rule, we can’t help each other and we won’t discuss what we are doing either.”
